Stewart selected as West Virginia football coach

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's Bill Stewart has been selected as head football coach.

The school dropped the interim tag from Stewart's title after the 11th-ranked Mountaineers' 48-28 win over No. 3 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday night.

Stewart will be officially introduced Thursday morning at a news conference at the team's hotel in Scottsdale, Ariz., athletic department spokesman Mike Fragale confirmed in a phone call with The Associated Press.

Rest of Story

When your STUD starting QB who JUST single-handedly demolished a Big 12 power gets on nat'l tv and damned near DEMANDS that this is the guy, what else is an AD/univ prezy to do? :lmao:

I know you have to be sarcastic when you type that. LOL. Because if the AD/Prezy listened to a kid who will be a Sr next year on who he wants to be coach then he is dumber than I thought those WVA folks are. Cal Magee is off to Michigan with Rich Rod to team up with recruiting ace Fred Jackson on what may be a good Michigan staff.

What is WVA going to do when Pat White is gone. Will Bill Stewart still be the guy with all the important members of that WVA staff gone.

I would have called ole Terry Bowden out of forced retirement or tried to keep Cal as HC. We'll see if Stewart will be able to recruit like Rich R. did.

I doubt it. Especially getting kids like Reynaud and White from La and Alabama.

Jr He has Devine, reynod(sp) and the Receivere who was crying for two more years. He 's got that big check and players all over the country saw that he is a players coach who loves the program..He will get all the WVA players and then some..What he needs to do is find person to run the spread offense rat now.

Thanks. But that STUD starting QB is the one who started the catapult to keep ol' boy w/out the interim title.

I know Devine is just a Fr. I have no doubt that they will be able to recruit Rbs. We will see if Stewart can coach without those other coaches on staff is my point. Plus recruiting out the region is a must for WVA. They can't win with just WVA players. That is what made Rich R good. He was able to dip out of the region for players consistently. Stewart may be fine for a moment until the Rich R players are gone. It will be interesting to say the least. You know Rich himself will be after the same players he was recruiting to WVA. He will have an easier sell. Michigan or WVA? I have a feeling this whole WVA vs Rich R is not over. He bout to steal some recruits to run that offense at Michigan. The WVA folks really going to mad then. Terrelle Pryor the prized Qb recruit this year was leaning toward Ohio State and considering WVA big time. Once he saw Rich go to Michigan.......he dropped WVA and added Michigan to mix. Stewart going to have his work cut out for him. Loyalty is all good. But you know these kids are looking to shine some where. WVA aint as sexy as it used to be with Rich gone. Kids will forget about this bowl win real quick.

P, again what is the AD and Prezy going to do when Pat White is gone after next year and this dude suddenly looks like an average coach or even worse? I can understand White wanting a coach that he already knows and don't have to worry about changing up for some new coach coming in. I get that. But as a University do you base your decision on a coach because he beat Oklahoma and your Sr to be QB wants him? Or do you look at the big picture of what happens with the program overall beyond the players you have now.

So are yall saying that WVA aint going to miss Rich R and Cal Magee or other coaches at all?

Steve Fisher looked like a great coach when he won the NCAA title at Michigan as an interim coach with Glen Rice and Rumeal Robinson. He recruited the Fab 5.........you know the rest.

I hope for WVA sake Stewart is not just an emotional choice.

I'm not disagreeing w/ you JR. I agree. But, that's not what occurred last night. C'mon now. lol You KNOW the AD/prezy were LISTENING on the field/skybox to Pat White and those comments. :emlaugh: On nat'l TV where you're accountable to boosters?

C'mon now. lol Pat White has pull on that campus UNTIL next year. And Devine and others aren't too far behind. lol

West Virginia made the same mistake that Tulane did when they didn't hire Rodriquez once Bowden left for Clemson. WVA should have promoted Calvin Magee to Head Coach... talk about a big recruiting edge. A Top Ten program hiring a Black man (promoted from within) to be the head coach. Sounds like a no brainer to me.

I hate to say that but alot alot of brothas on that level who receive these big checks rather gigs like that...

the DC at Tennessee worked in the SWAC but has been Fulmer's DC for years...why hasn't he stepped out? Jackson at Michigan looks like a career assistant....

At least Fobbs did step out and try......

I hear you but I thought the same way P did last night. Also WVA has had sucess prior to Rich arriving. And there is talent in the VA area. Pat white's brother is the same type QB and he will be looking for a home soon. I'm just saying with that community support and national recognition they might still get some great players.

Jackson at Michigan did want to step out at one time. No one came a knocking. So what do you do?

Has any of our schools called Calvin to seek him out for an interview? Did FAMU who wanted to pay Broadway big money even call him? We always say what those guys will not do. But they have egos too. We could show that we are interested. I guess they can show that too. So it becomes a stalemate. Neither side approaches the other. Now I can't say I blame them for staying a OC or DC and make that paper. Some cats don't want to be Head Coaches.

Monte Kiffin at Tampa Bay had many chances to be a head coach and didn't take a job. Same with Micky Andrews at Florida State. Some guys like not having the pressure of being the head man. I think we all believe that any brother that is coaching wants to be a head coach. Some are content just getting paid just like I see some in corporate America who don't aspire to be a VP or a CEO. Just aint their personality. Or just maybe they think they will be the next Randy Shannon, Sly Croom, or Ty Willingham if they stick to being on the FBS level as a coordinator.

Valid points...especially when you talk about the pressures of being "the" man!

They are probably recruiting another QB right now.... You act like White is the last of good athletic QB's!!!:lmao: This dude has years of coaching experience. Man, we are very big on holding people back and not wanting to give them opportunities. But yet and still we welcome new challenges and opportunities for ourselves..... WOW!!! I wish the guy success!!

One thing is he has been a OC at the Professional level. He may do just fine.

Pat White's lil brother Coley is being recruited hard by West Va. He will announce where he will commit soon. Word has it that he more than likely will sign with WVU. He also plays qb.

And these guys have won two BCS bowl games in recent history and play in a BCS conference. They will be fine going forward.

Uh, you are missing the point. My question is can the man coach and is this hire an emotional one based on a bowl win and what the players want or did they really think about it long term. WVA hired Rich Rodriguez because he had proven he could coach. Just because the players like Stewart is not the reason to hire the man. The players all loved Larry Coker and lobbied for him to take over at Miami when Butch Davis bolted for the NFL. You see how that turned out after all of Davis players were gone. Kids normally support the hiring of an assistant they are familiar with.

Dahill and Shawiggi,

Just because Pat White brother is coming does not mean WVA will be a juggernaut. He will have to endure the pressure of playing in his brother's shadow. Not to mention, we don't know how good of a recruiter Stewart is. I just thought they had a chance to do better. Aint like WVA is a mecca for college football. You still will have to coach whatever talent you do get. Hell even Rodriguez teams had shortcomings at times. It will be very interesting to see if this coach is the real deal. I agree with Mike Bigg that if I was WVA that I would have tried to keep Cal Magee around as the head coach instead of this guy. Likable guys by players don't always add up to wins. I am looking at the article on Stewart and outside of probably being a nice guy.........I aint impressed with his resume. But hey we will see how WVA does. I don't think they wanted to pay big money for a name coach. Stewart is safe because no one else wanted him and he is a homeboy of WVA. So they think they will not have a coach bolt and leave.

Kendrick's gift to benefit scholarships

$1 million donated to WVU at Fiesta Bowl

West Virginia University alumnus Ken Kendrick welcomed the Mountaineers to Arizona Monday (Dec. 31) with a surprise donation of over $1 million to cover the cost of unsold tickets to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

"Ken and I met yesterday to discuss how we can work together to move WVU forward," said WVU President Mike Garrison, who is in Arizona with thousands of other Mountaineers for Wednesday's (Jan. 2) football game against the Oklahoma Sooners. "I know that he cares about the University, our
students and our athletic programs, and he has shared some very constructive suggestions with me."

Kendrick, who in recent weeks has been outspoken about Coach Rich Rodriguez' departure for the University of Michigan, said, "while I have been critical of recent events in the Athletic Department, I made this gift because I love West Virginia University and West Virginia, and I only want what's best for my University."

"His gift is a signal that the lifelong relationships that bind us together as West Virginians are not easily broken," Garrison said. "We may sometimes disagree ? and we're not shy about expressing ourselves when we do. But at the bottom of it all, the passion we feel is driven by our dedication to the state and to the University."

His gift of $1,012,500 to the WVU Foundation will support scholarships at WVU. It equals the amount WVU paid for 7,500 unsold Fiesta Bowl tickets. In part, Kendrick made the gift in recognition of the loyal Mountaineer fans who were unable to travel to Arizona for the game. He has worked with the Fiesta Bowl Committee to make tickets turned in by WVU available to Phoenix-area nonprofit organizations. ...

West Virginia defied the odds by defeating ?mighty? Oklahoma at the Tostito?s Fiesta Bowl. Bill Stewart is no longer the ?interim? head coach of West Virginia. He is now THE head coach of West Virginia, and everyone is happy?

Well, make that ALMOST everyone is happy. Ken Kendrick, wealthy alum/booster of WVU, has criticized the move. Here?s the direct quote: ?He is so overmatched it?s not even funny,? said Kendrick, managing partner of Major League Baseball?s Arizona Diamondbacks. ?He?s a nice guy and a father figure. But they had a wonderful architect and they hired the painter to build the next house. I want Bill Stewart to win and I want our program to be successful. But I feel bad for our future. I?m very concerned.?
