DESTIN, Fla. -- In recent years, Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban have been locked in the never-ending quest to be named Best SEC Coach Since Bear Bryant. It's a mythical debate that Spurrier threw himself into last month.

Spurrier made some waves in Alabama in April when he said this to ESPN.com of Saban:

"If he wants to be the greatest coach or one of the greatest coaches in college football, to me, he has to go somewhere besides Alabama and win, because they've always won there at Alabama."

At the SEC spring meetings today, Spurrier attempted to backtrack when asked about his comment.

"No, he's a great coach. I don't know what I was talking about," Spurrier said. "I was just saying, they won their 14th national championship, right? I was just trying to say one reason I love being at South Carolina is that we have so many opportunities to achieve things for the first time ever.

The original article (from April) is below. In this article, Spurrier also threw a jab at Georgia . . .

His thoughts on the game against Georgia moving from the second to the sixth week of the season:

"I don't know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended."

LOL @ Spurrier. Does Bama play SC this year?

This is why Spurrier is number 1 on that list you posted in the other thread. But you got to like the old ball coach. He keeps it interesting. LOL. Saban is probably like we are going to kick your arse Steve. LOL.

South Carolina won the last meeting in the 2010-2011 season.

 You're right on all points, JR.

And yes, 'number1' Spurrier got the best of Saban in 2010, but you can best believe Saban will tap his arse next time. And fortunately for Spurrier, they don't play Bama this year.

I actually think South Carolina would "tap" Alabama again this year.

I don't think so, my friend.

But unlike a lot of people, I actually like Spurrier. I hated him at Florida because I hate everything about the univ. of Florida.

But if he played Saban this year he'd get monkey stomped.

Of course you hate Florida, they are the #1 athletic department in the SEC and one of the top 5 in the country.

Spurrier got smart and realized that his USC teams won't win like he did at Florida with a dynamic offense and solid D. He realized that the key to winning was a strong D and balanced offense that can control the clock.
