St. Augustine High School in New Orleans.

I want to open up a discussion about "St. Aug".

For those of you all who may not know. St. Augustine or St. Aug is an all male, historically black school in New Orleans. The school has a long and respectable history within New Orleans. The school is famous for it's band and probably equally as famous or infamous for being all male and it's use of corporal punishment.

Over the last couple of weeks I've had a few discussions with a few people who've run across St. Augustine Alumni and dealt with them as boyfriends, friends, students and employees. This various discussions have lead to me wonder what is really going with that particular school.
As noted above the school does use corporal punishment. Now I understand that much of this forum's population is southern based and because of that many of your political ideologies may sit center-right or right. So to many of you corporal punishment may not be such a big deal. But I'm asking that you think outside of the box. In my opinion the use of corporal punishment on teenage boys is a little too late in life. I feel that at this point teenage students should be dealt with by teachers as people aproaching adult-hood and not 5 year old student.
The school's use of corporal punishment seems fairly antiquated as it is noted on The Center for Effective Discipline that St. Aug is the only Catholic School in the US that still uses corporal punishment, click the link and to find the origin of the words that in quotes.

While all Catholic Diocesan school have bans, there are several Catholic schools that are operated privately, by religious orders of nuns, priest or layman, that fall outside the diocesan system. We have surveyed many of these, and to our knowledge only one Catholic school in the country is still hitting students. St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, LA continues to use corporal punishment. Operated by the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart (The Josephite Fathers and Brothers) here is the school’s website: http://www.purpleknights.com/. Our information is current as of September, 2008. Any parents considering this school should be alert to this danger to their child. If you are aware of any Catholic schools where corporal punishment is currently being used, please contact the author of this study: Nadine Block at [email protected]

Here is a video of how corporal punishment is administered at St. Aug.

As I've said above, I've talked to various people about St. Augustine Alumni and on a few occasions talked to St. Augustine Alumni themselves.
Speaking to an Atlanta woman who dated a St. Augustine graduate, she noted he constantly wanted to hang with this former St. Aug classmates and spent way too much time concerning himself with buying clothes. She also noted that he had a very strange way interacting with her and other women. That same Atlanta woman attended college in New Orleans and was familiar with St. Aug and had previously dated St. Aug students and she pointed out similar idiosyncrasies amongst them.

Speaking to a friend of mine who is a manager at a Rite-Aid, he noted that the few St. Augustine alumni that he's hired that they have been lazy, incompetent, unreliable and immature. Why is this?

Now looking at the St. Aug alumni that know, I myself have noticed that many of them seem to socially lagging in terms of behavior. Entering college with a few of them, they operated as if they were 13 or 14 year olds entering 9th grade as opposed to 17 or 18 year olds entering their Freshman year of college. Loud outbursts, constant ribbing or joking and pretty soon most of them would be gone by mid year. Those that remained were painfully shy.

Now looking all of this, I'm left to wonder about St. Augustine.

Does a school that uses corporal punishment on teenagers in all-boy setting arrest the social development of young men? Are these boys being socially frozen at age 14 upon entering St. Aug and thawing out upon graduation as an 18 year old with the mindset of a 14 year old?

One thing that I hear fairly often from some teenage boys who attend St. Aug is "I don't want to go here, it's just my mama is making me go". (mostly Parents opting to send their sons to St. Aug due to problems or perceived problems in New Orleans Public school system)

Which leads me to wonder how many young men are at St. Aug that do not want to be there and because of that they respond negatively and preform academically worse than they would otherwise.

After looking at all of this...

Would you still opt to send you son here?

And Should St. Aug consider rebooting it's manner of educating young men?

I know this is not everybody, but when you've seen something over and over and over and began to notice a pattern, maybe something is wrong and maybe action needs to be taken to correct it..

St. Aug is a private school and it is widely know the type of young men that come out of the school. If you don't want your son to be subjected to that type of punishment, take your kid and your money to some other school.

Understood.
But understand the mentality of some parents (mostly single mothers) to many of them St. Aug is the only option given the state of public schools in New Orleans for a young man to get an education. I myself do not believe that, but many do.

St. Aug likes pride it self on being the best high school in New Orleans and if St. Aug receives an enrollment bump due to the state of the public schools shouldn't they take betters strides to educate the young men who get shuffled in there?

That paddle reminds me of the time I got caught cussing the school cafeteria during lunch when Eddie Murphy released Raw. Man I was showing out for all my friends, then all of a sudden they got quite and disappeared. Man Doc gave me two choices, call my mama or take 5 licks with the bulldog paddle. I knew my mama would give me a thousand licks so I settled for the paddle. :shame: Man I had on some dress slacks to. :scared::shame::sick:

:smh: You've been bad all your life, huh? LOL

I don't see a problem with it.. Many parents send their kids to St.Aug because they know of the disciplinary actions over there and they all approve of it. This isn't a secret; I knew about that when I was in elementary down here in New Orleans.

I know it isn't a secret. I have St. Aug alums in my family and am friends with a few and I myself attended for a short period of time in 1998. Everybody in the city knows of St. Aug's disciplinary actions. I remember being in 8th grade and telling a older white woman about me potentially attending St. Aug and even she made a remark about the corporal punishment.

My point in this thread is not to "expose" anything, my point is to show that maybe just maybe the methods they swear by are NOT working.

All I know is I respect the Aug. I went to SU with folks like Avery Johnson and some of my fellow Jukes who are St. Aug alums. All those cats seemed to be on top of things. They all graduated from SU and are pretty successful now. I don't know what is going on now at the school. But they have a long history of turning out good folks from my experience of meeting folks that went there.

Maybe these new school kids are the problem. St. Aug can't save all of them. I am sure even back in the day they had some that just didn't get it.

If I lived in New Orleans and had a son that was HS age...St. Aug would be one of my first choices for school.

First of I am a recent graduate(2008) of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans,La the only predominately black all male Catholic High School in the U.S. My problem with this is Why are you so worried about St. Augustine High School because if it has nothing to do with you then maybe you shouldn't be making any comments on it? St. Augustine only uses corporal punishment when needed for example my freshman(2004) and juinor(2006) year I got the paddle all year because I acted a fool but my senior year I think the whole year I got hit like once that was for missing track practice. Before you come to St. Aug your parents have to sign a waiver to get your ass bust , so if your family sign those papers then obviously they are willing to let you receive corporal punishment. Another thing for those who said they were forced to go to St. Aug eventually will get over it because I didnt know choosing a high school is like choosing a college if that was the case then I would be a McD 35 or Brother Martin graduate. I know what it feels like to be just put in a school I didn't want to go to but it wasn't my choice
because I wasn't grown I was still in my mothers house so I couldn't make my own decisions. I started out hating St. Aug I was thinking why am I letting these grown ass men beat my ass I dont even let my daddy hit me but I grew to love St. Aug the brotherhood, the tradition, and the foundation of them making me into the intelligent man I am today. St. Augustine is like a Fraternity the 4,5,or 6 years your pledging but once you graduate you cross into the Elite 5,000 men that came before you and went through the same process you did and we may have our few men that are dead beats but majority of the St. Augustine men are professional and intelligent brothers. No matter what when you leave St. Aug you become a MAN that is capable of doing anything because you went through the toughest halls any high school can have. I love my Alma Mater with all my hearts and all my brothers who shared that same bond with me. I stand proud raising my fist in the air when the Famous Marching 100 play that Alma Mater and sing the words RISE SONS OF THE GOLD AND PURPLE.....!!!!!

PLEASE TAKE THAT VIDEO DOWN BECAUSE WHAT GOES ON AT 2600 LONDON AVE. or 2600 A.P. TUREAUD STAYS AT 2600 LONDON AVE. or 2600 A.P. TUREAUD.

P.S. If the video don't come down I will have to contact St. Augustine High School. Thank you Sir. Good Day!!!!:lecture:

I been living in New Orleans all my life, I had no idea A.P. Tureaud was also referred to as London Ave. ..lol

Morris and Gavin are St. Aug grads JR and you know how they feel about their highschool.
You say something bad about that school in front of them and you got a fight on your hands.
They were named St. Aug I and St. Aug II when they pledged at JState 2 years apart.
1981(St. Aug I) and 1983(St. Aug II).

Yes a kid that doesn't want to be at a school will tend to act out. I know a few in that same boat-don't want to be at a school. The only reason they are there is because MOMMA graduated from there or the skin color of the principal is BLACK. Parents more concern about the skin color of the staff versus the ability of the staff. Put some Hispanic principals at a few Oak Cliff High Schools and in less than one year those schools will be giving some "white" schools a run for the money in academic success.
Because the color blind parents will yank their kids out in a minute.

Also what type of young boys are they getting? Are these boys behavior problems? Boys that would be considered Special Education in the school district?

You get boys that ran wild in regular school and put them in an enviroment where they get PUNISHED instead of excuses or lesser consequences are being handed out. You will get that type of behavior when they finish school-either they are shy (scared to act out) or out of control (because they are free from that school). Also could it be a shock for those boys to be at a school where parents actually support the actions of the school? That doesn't happen too often nowadays.

It depends on the young man. What are their homes like? Neighborhoods?

I think if that school was to take boys from kindergarden to high school-you might see a difference. You get young and you might not need it when they get older.
That corpral punishment is too late for a teen-especially a teen that has been in and out of juvenile or lived a tough life on the streets.

True.

When I worked at Capital One(then-Hibernia National Bank) we had a couple of St. Aug grads in Management there. They love St. Aug.

I'm just waitin on road dawg to chime in.

First off the video is not coming down, because once it's on the net, it's public domain. I'm not trying to out St. Aug, I'm not trying to diss St. Aug.
But I'm looking at one St. Aug graduate and watching a current student whom I am guardian of and then listening to comments coming from people who have dealt with with St. Augustine alumni on intimate and professional levels. In my opinion something is missing. This isn't just isolated incidents, this is multiple people telling me similar things about graduates of this damn school.

Man folks talked about Christ, so what's your point? Christ performed miracles documented by every religion in the world, yet folks still say he isn't their savior. Now how does every religion in the world recognize his greatness but still say he wasn't the savior? Point is folks will always find fault. You can't save every child. Some folks just want make it. Some things are really in our genes. You can't escape it, unless you decide you want to escape it. If I know my parents are alcoholics, that means it's a 99% chance I will be also. That means I shouldn't drank. Get it?
