Antioch?s Johns picks Prairie View
By Harold Huggins, [email protected]
April 18, 2006

Standout Antioch High shooting guard Shakeya Johns has announced she will sign to play college basketball for Prairie View A&M in Texas.

?It was a great fit for me,? said the 5-4 Johns, who became Antioch?s career points leader at mid-season and was one of Nashville?s premier players for four years.

Johns broke the school record set by Chantelle Blakely (now at Auburn) for career points and finished with more than 1,700 points for her career.

The Lady Panthers are coached by Cynthia Cooper, a two-time WNBA MVP and four-time WNBA champion with the Houston Comets.

?They recruited me as a shooting guard, and that?s what I was looking for,? Johns said. ?I can?t ask for more than to play for someone with the international and WNBA experience that Coach Cooper has.?

Prairie View, located in Prairie View, Texas, is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Panthers were 7-21 last year.

aamu women sign Katrich Williams of tyner aca in chattanooga, tn. 5'8 guard.

She is averaging 24.1 points per game this season for the Lady Rams (15-4) and has 1,982 points and 661 steals for her career. Williams? big numbers and large presence will be hard to replace, Tyner coach Terrie Parks said. The 5-foot-8 three-time district-tournament MVP has been with the Lady Rams for four of Parks? five years as coach.

As to why she picked Alabama A&M, "It was close to home and went I went
down for a visit I fell in love with the coaches and players and I felt
right at home." She chose the school near Huntsville, over UTC,
UNC-Wilmington, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Tennessee State, and
Jacksonville University.

“Without Calvin, there would be no Coahoma County winning the state championship,” Panthers coach Isaiah Peterson says. “He was the coach on the floor who kept everything going for me. He never worried about shooting because he just wanted to kick the ball to the open man. Calvin’s also the kind of player who won’t back down from anyone.”

DEVIL..............what happened to the two players Valley signed last year from Holly Springs>

Kenny Dawkins and the other kid decided to go to other schools when they found out Strib was leaving. Holly Springs got another point guard who is supposed to be waaay better named Clevin Hannah, maybe we can get at him.

P.S. UAPB signed a great point guard in Terrance Calvin from Coahoma Co., they state titles two years in a row. Ravern Johnson is on that team also.

UAPB just got a steal. Terrance Calvin played on my high school's rival team. He was All-state second team, Mississippi Dandy Dozen, MS/AL Allstar player (he scored 7 points), and Clarksdale Press Player of the Year. He is very confident, team-oriented, and most of all.....a strong leader. Don't be fooled by his point average, just look at his assist average and you'll see why. Very good kid and will shoot you down if he has too (scored 47 points as a sophomore against then North 1 Coldwater). Also he is a good free throw shooter which we lack in this conference. But UAPB can contribute this steal to the recent step down of Delta State head coach because thats where Calvin was headed at first.

I am very disappointed that Ravern committed to Mississippi State. I had Memphis written all over him.
