there's a kid on the band board saying SU will play Miles this year

PV used to play SU the 3rd week, now that we moved the game I am wondering who it will be.

Yeah I saw that on the band board. I am wondering why SU and FAMU can't come back to table and renew their contract. Sounds like Billy Joe nor Pete are that interested. i would love to see SU and FAMU play in Mobile, Alabama. FAMU is playing Troy State there this year.
Miles just doesn't do it for me if they are on there. But I notice some SWAC schools have picked up the Atlanta schools. I would rather play Mo Brown again. At least they are 1-AA. I wonder what happened to the TnState rumors of a year ago. Well we will see what happens.

Bluebengal, Southern just can't move games around, the other schools have to agree first. That looks like and exciting schedule on paper.

10 games before the first open date? I don't know any coach, NCAA D1 to NAIA, that would go for that kind of schedule. Sounds fun....but you wouldn't finish the schedule with the same team you started with in Aug.

ACTUALLY THEY ARE WORKING ON NICHOLS STATE AT HOME BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY A FEW HOME GAMES AND GUESS WHO NORTHERN ARIZONA....BELIEVE IT!!!!

Nichols and TSU aren't playing according to the schedule so I see them at SU doing something

the FAMU series was a mistake to end. You had a legitimate playoff oppoent every year

PF,
We finally agree. But for some reason Billy Joe was quoted as saying it was fine with him not playing us because he had enough tough games. Go figure. I know he wanted out of the Miami game and I can understand that. But considering that FAMU had beat us until this past year, I would figure they would want to play. Pete didn't seem too unhappy about not playing FAMU either so I don't know if its just personal for both coaches or what. But both schools are missing out. I actually hate we stopped playing TnState too. But it has more to due with the OVC than them not wanting too. When I was at SU we played FAMU and TnSU every year. I would love to see SU/FAMU in Mobile every year. They have added another classic game down there in addition to the GCC. FAMU is playing Troy St this year. But SU vs FAMU there would be great. Halfway for both schools and really no home field advantage. Good recruiting tool for both schools and a guarnteed sellout and Battle of the Bands. I wish someone from Mobile would approach SU and FAMU about this for 2003.

Southern has filled its football schedule with Division II cream puffs. Lane College, Miles College, and who knows what other sandwhich meat we have on the tray.

Saturday on the Jaguar Journal on the radio the guys were calling out some of the teams we were playing and it was ridiculous. And somebody even had the nerve to say that Lane College folks were looking forward to coming to Baton Rouge.

What the hell are we doing? What is the point in having 5 home games when you don't have one single game on the bluff worth seeing?

Its a crying shame to have all of those DII teams on the schedule and we didn't even get competitive DII squads.

WHY ISN'T SOUTHERN PLAYING ALCORN

Why isn't Southern playing Alcorn? The schools are only about 2
1/2 hours apart?

SWAC TEAM ROTATION. SU WILL BE BACK ON ALCORNS SCHEDULE 2003-2006 AND ROTATE OFF AGAIN IN 2007

THAT'S NOT A VALID REASON. UAPB PLAYS EVERY TEAM IN THE SWAC. SOUTHERN COULD HAVE SCHEDULED ALCORN, THE GAME
JUST WANT COUNT IN THE SWAC STANDINGS.

Could have come down to wanting a home and home series. Don't think Southern wants to travel to Alcorn when they don't have to, and keep the game at home.

GSU DOESN'T HAVE VALLEY ON THE SCHEDULE. UAPB ROTATION WILL COME. SU AND JSU WILL ROTATE OFF EACH OTHERS SCHEDULE EVENTUALLY. BAMA WILL ROTATE OFF OF ALCORNS SCHEDULE...

First, I hate to compare Southern University's program to Louisiana State University's program.

But, for the sake of discussion; Southern University is just taking advantage of the new SWAC Divisional alignment and secondly their history of drawing well for home games.

It is similar to Louisiana State University taking advantage of the new SEC Divisional alignment, revenue and home attendance to pay mid-major NCAA Division I A programs and sometimes a one game scenario of a NCAA Division I AA program to come play in Baton Rouge, LA.

Louisiana State University in the Western Division of the SEC would not even consider scheduling the Univeristy of Florida in the Eastern Division as non-conference game even though both institutions have a long rivalry in the SEC.

Now, one will have watch the statement of the Southern University fans. Will the Southern University fans turn out to a non-conference game against a Miles College, Lane College, and Nicholls State, similar to how Louisiana State University fans turn out to a non-conference game against University of North Texas, University of Alabama at Birmingham or a NCAA Division I AA opponent in Sam Houston State University?

If they do, then it should provide Southern University with a larger net gain in their athletic budget.

Rattlemania,
I feel the same way. We need to find a way to get our schools to play each othe in Mobile in 2003.

I don't think thats possible since both Bama State and Alcorn are in the East.

JR, as far as SU/FAMU in Mobile, don't count on it ....

From the Tallahassee Democrat
Alabama State interim athletic director Robert Spivery confirmed that he and Riley (FAMU AD) have discussed the possibility of the schools playing annually in an upstart classic that would be played in Mobile, Ala.
The only reason we're not playing this year is because of scheduling conflicts, but its a good bet that the ASU/FAMU series will start again in '03

So MH, does that mean you guys will be in both Mobile games next year? Who are you playing this year in Mobile? Is it JSU?

JR,

If (when) the FAMU series starts in Mobile, it will likely be the only game we will play there each year. We would start back playing JSU and Southern in Montgomery.

I have said all along that I don't like the fact that SU and Alcorn don't play. I think that JSU, SU, Alcorn, and Grambling are the center of the SWAC. Those are games where anything can happen. Those are the games that have made the SWAC what it is. Those are the games that make up 90% of the all-time greatest SWAC matchups. I think that SU and Alcorn not playing hurts the SWAC and the fans. Besides, Alcorn is closer to SU than Grambling. Travel is not that much.

On the other hand, this does not surprise me. SU's AD is looking for money. Remember they were trying to play Benny last year. SU did not sell out every game last year but two years ago they did. Regardless, the Jags are good for 17K at every game. That is at least 200K in revenue, money saved on travel, plus concessions and parking. They could play a team 100K and still have 150K left over. This is very smart. This could net them 300K for two games vs 0 K for a home-home when they are the away team one year. Some classics don't pay 150K. Some schools like Langston and Miles don't see a guarantee of 100K every week. I hope this works for SU.

SU has to get DII's to do this because most 1AA programs won't go for it. They pimped MoBrown.

Actually....

SU did not sell out every game last year but two years ago they did. Regardless, the Jags are good for 17K at every game.

It rained for every home game but PV and the home fans just never hardly ever turn out for the PV game. As far as 17K, we average 24K easily.
