Southern Vs. Alabama State 1997

DAMN NEW SCHOOLERS. THEY JUST WALK IN, PLAY THEIR INSTRUMENTS, THEN GO HOME. AND THEY THINK THAT THEY ARE A MARCHING HORNET. LEARN THE DAMN HISTORY. WE HAVE HAD ONLY 5 BAND DIRECTORS AT BAMA STATE (LYLE, DAVIS, BRAY, CHAPMAN, AND OLIVER). I BET WHOEVER THAT WAS DON'T EVEN KNOW THE FIVE POINT TO A MARCHING HORNET. AND THAT'S THE FIRST THING WE LEARN.

Now don't be so rough on the newbees. They probably were taught (by an idiot that shall remain nameless) that because Chap was the interum Head that it didn't count or some BS like that.... See u at the picnic? its may 3 in oak park

sheeed...they prolly paper whoever they talkin bout..... Cause I know in the history we were taught and teach, there are 5 BD's.

~shrugs~

and whats up "TOUCH DOWN"

the new schooler he's talking about is me and don't let him lie to you. he said that chapmen was head b.d. for three thats 3 years. i simply pointed out to him that he was interim for one thats 1 year 99.

lil boi( sutrpt36) don't ever try me like i don't know my history you aint got no clue what i went through to learn it. smf to the old school if you doubt any of what i know we can go toe to toe and blow to blow if you think i'm slippin but don't be suprised if i catch you falling. no disrespect but im as real as they come.

Sigma Alpha Chi 2004 #4 the 11 that came the 9 that stayed.

It?s obvious that you don't know much about band history past the 90's and what?s funny is I?ve had this debate with you before. SU did not influence Alabama State (except for that neck which seems to be yall proudest accomplishment within the last decade) if anything Alabama State has gone back to its roots during the Lyle days (you know the man from famu who started the band in 1964 before Dr. Greggs came up with the concept for southern.) back then Alabama State did a lot of the same drills that su did when they where 128 because they came straight from a patterns in motion book. However as Lyle got older he came up with his own original drills the shapes and things that we do a lot of now. There is only one band that can say they seriously influenced Alabama State and that?s Famu (you know Lyle was the original assistant director there) which is where the marching style and fast march comes from. (Although I believe we do it better but that could be pride talking) but when Lyle created his band he had a brassier sound (only 12-16 saxes 12 clarinets and 4 flutes we didn?t have piccolos back then we must have gotten that from su versus 36 trpts 12 fhorns 12 baritones 12-16 trombones and 12 tubas however the struggle to maintain the 36 trumpets is well documented.) Lyle left in 88 Dannie Davis took over and only had 88 members (this is also the last year jsu came to cramton bowl if I?m not mistaken 88 in 88) Davis wanted a big band so more woodwinds where allowed in the band the arrangers changed there was a guy named gus walker there who arranged for the new confines of the band which only had around 20 trumpets in a given year. Then came bray or brae forgive the spelling who brought back power and brass to the band look at any clip of 94-98 especially 97 and 98 the band played arrangements by a Ralph Chapman(sp) who was also an interim director in 99 until he was fired( alumni were mad when wip turns and things of that nature started showing up in the marching style. Then came Oliver the first Marching Hornet Director at Alabama State( this is when the hate Started) who?s had some of the biggest bands to date but has gone back to the old traditions being as that?s what he knows from marching in 75. Our staff is 100% MMH with a director from the 70?s 80?s and early 90?s not to mention Mr. Free still teaches in the music building and he?s from the 60?s 64 to be exact he crabbed the first band.
There you go a brief summary letting you know how little you really know about ASU I should board this entire web site up for all this history. Bamasax4 educating you ignorant old ninjas since 2004.

Lies and more lies. You prove with each post how little you know. Alabama State has been doing halftime shows since before 64 but 64 is considered as a different band it was nothing like the Alabama State University(college) band under Hayes. Do some research and you'd know this don't just assume. And yes Chapman was an interim director for one year. He was never hired as the head director. Harold a brae was the head director and was fired right before the start of the 99 season (Chapman was an arranger). That?s why the band was so small in 99 he changed the marching style and eliminated half time fanfare which (outwardly cant say I know the inner workings of the Alabama State administration like you do smh) is why he was let go. If you?re never actually hired for a job but end up filling the position that makes you an interim (how old are you). So su was hitting the field before Alabama State if so you must be talking about the band that was before Greggs and if so what does that have to do with the jukebox which Greggs started in 99. I know my history maybe you should brush up on yours. Same guy that said that we sounded so different and woodwind heavy in 99 the same year that the band was playing Jamaica funk.
also see that you can't admit being wrong about all the other made up b.s. you typed. lol chapman band director for 3 years was it a leap decade or something. sad. i know exactly i know who the administration tried to hire down there and every thing. i bet you believed they only called one person. here something thats a secret when ever filling a position allways interview a lot of people to make sure that the best canidate is selected.

this is everything that was said to buddy in context. trust me when i say i know what i be talking about.

smh , lil boy you was probably in a corner store picking up some cigarettes for your ma and pa when what you TRYING to speak on was going down.. Fool, you totally dismissed the fact Chapmen was recognized as a head director .. Simple as that!

I told your lil arse what I know from my ACTUALLY being in school and in the band at the time and knowing folk that marched at ASU during my time..

You say he was only recognized as interim during 99 season... H3ll fool, I said Chapman was over the band 97-99... I don't know who they actually called the head director during that time.. All I know he was who us folk knew as the MAN over there during that time frame..

And kill all that internet thug isht lil boy, I'll be at the ASU/SU game save all of that for then... Now tell folk how you was telling it over there, Chapmen was NEVER a recognized as a head director. Like I told your silly arse, I don't know all the technicalities at ASU, just like you don't know what DOC Greegs or Mr.Jackson LEGAL title was.. But you knew during your time who was the MAN in front the band during your time... And that simply what I was speaking on.. DURING my time, Chapmen was the MAN everyone spoke of when you said ASU 97-99, Brea may have been the HEAD from 97-98, All I know is what cats from ASU would tell me, if he wasn't the head in 97-98 he sholl was the MAN..

Just like the 80's for SU.. Doc Greegs was the Head... but if you marched in any band against SU during that time you knew Roy Johnson was the MAN as well.... You was totally dismissing Chapmen and saying he was isht but an interim in 99, give that man more respect than that lil boy...

Which is where the argument came from... From a thread "SU influence on the SWAC". you was just throwing out information to make it seem like Chapmen wasn't isht to build a case even the SMALL influence he brought to ASU shouldn't be recognized.. stick to talking about isht from 04 to now, since you seem to want to take information to fit what ever weak point you are trying to get across.. Even if Chapmen wasn't head in 97-98 YOU would be a fool to say he didn'ty bring INFLUENCE with his arrangements son...

I never said he didn't influence state dummy. In fact I clearly pointed out to your no comprehending arse what influence he did have. the FACT not opinion still remains he was Interim Band Director (again since you don't know what interim means at 30 plus it means that you do a job that you're not hired for sort of a temporary fill in.) you prove how smart you are every time you post lil man got ya feelings showing, tuff it up kid.

As for him being head for 3 years it?s a lot more to being a head b.d. then just being on the box someone of your age should be able to comprehend that. If that?s the case Gerome Campbell must be the 6th director guess we need to update the history. Gone and tell these old school marching hornets how you said brae was just collecting a check during his tenure. That?s the only way Chapman being even remotely the head b.d. for 97-98 makes since. Fact is you don?t know what went on in Tullibody just some he say she say they say I heard b.s. so don?t open ya mouth to speak on what you don?t understand.

i aint revrend wright boi you aint gone take me out of context stick to facts if you can.

I feel ya bruh...you gon be at the set Friday?

In the end you look like a real broad because you on here saying isht differently from what you were saying on there... But I tell you what save your 30+ cracks for when we meet, atleast by then I will be 30. And in turn I'll tell you and show you what I think about your dumb arse... You talk as if you don't plan on seeing 30 lil stupid. But you keep yapping your mouth like a lil B OFF the net you may not see 30....:lmao: It's easy to talk like you are hercules on the net...lol But when the game get near I will make sure I have an extra field pass so you can come down and talk all the weak isht you want...

Fellas, save the testosterone for some other venue. Smack, facts, and history are one thing. Personal attacks/conflicts will not be tolerated here. If it continues this thread will be closed. This started out as an interesting thread and has denigrated into :argue:.

Now don't be so rough on the newbees. They probably were taught (by an idiot that shall remain nameless) that because Chap was the interum Head that it didn't count or some BS like that.... See u at the picnic? its may 3 in oak park

Wassup John, of course you know who this is. Also wassup to Fred, TD, Brian, Yvette..etc.

Slow ya roll a bit. You may not know but I'm one of those who said Chap was an interum..............AND HE WAS. Of course he is counted in our history as the 4th MMH director because he did play that role. But we all know that truthfully he was just that................INTERUM. Now of course he earned resespect from various members for various reasons.

But lets get the record straight. For those of us that marched during his tenure.........know he was not "the man". He could arrange his azz off, thats off the top!!!........but all the technics responsible for our sound in that era came directly from Dr. Harold Bray. Bray was a damn genius when it came to music and sound. Chap, on his own, added some things that gave some Southern Univ. influence to the band. And we all know, that s.hyt also added drama. If were gonna put it out........then lets do just that. Further, many of the members from the 99 band were ones that he had influence over. If you can remember.........he kept close quarters with his mobile peeps because they gave little to no resistance to his ideas. Think about it, he eliminated most of the people that was pro "MMH". From the DMs, to the stingette instructor, to the section leaders........hell even to some of the stingette members. We all know the drama that ended up happening throughout that 99 season. He was not set up for failure because it was just him. We all know that Chap wasn't savy to others ideas or how they felt about the band. You know that........especially considering how so many arrangements mysterically disappeared. Remember those Ike Bell tunes that never left the band room?!?!? So that one man show is out the door. Smitty was there, Duncom was around........but you know how that went too. I marched during the Bray/Chap Era and besides Yvette and them, crabbed the majority, hell....all of yall on this board who also marched in that era. Lets keep it real. New school aint crazy. He know his s.hyt. I can see were some things between him and SUTRP got a lil turned around. But as a MMH, see things for what they are and lets not forget the truths about what happened back then. I sure as hell didn't cause I was THERE too! Love yall............see you at the picnic.

BTW.....Jonh, thanks for hittin me up last nite..........we gotta make that happen. Brian, stay up.........and Fred...........gon set it up for ya boy!!!!

Catch feeling?!?, didn't you log on here after 2 years to express your feelings trying to defend your lie?..lmao
I told you what I had to tell you chap..

THIS GAME WAS A DISASTER. WHEN WE (BAMA STATE) WENT ON THE FIELD, ABOUT 4 SQUADS MOVED 5 YASRDS DOWN TO LET SU COME OF THE FIELD. WELL THEY DID NOT MOVED BACK. THE SHOW WENT DOWN FROM THERE. WACK DANCE ROUTINE, STINGETTES WERE OK. GOT BACKI INTO THE STANDS ANS SU GAVE IT TO US. I MEAN RAW, WITH NO GREASE! THE 5TH WAS OK. THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME WE PLAYED HOPELESS AND JAMAICA FUNK. SOUTHERN WAS JUST ON ANOTHER LEVEL. THEY WAS SENDING MESSAGES TO MONTGOMERY ALL THAT WEEK THROUGH ONE OF OUR CRABS. IT WAS A WEEK THAT I REALLY DONT WANNA REMEMBER! LOL

I would like to know how both sides line up 5 yards off. Southern only marched off on the vistor sides. I went and look at the tape the members on the home side were 5 yards off too. :lmao:

AIIGT. FIRST OFF, I WAS A SECTION LEADER UNDER BRAY AND KEPT THAT POSITION UNDER BRAY. I DONT THINK I GOT THAT POSITION JUST BECAUSE IM FROM MOBILE. AS FOR THE SU SOUND THAT YOU SAID WE HAD, TO ME , THAT WAS PROBABLY THE BEST ALABAMA STATE SOUNDED IN YEARS. BY THE WAY, WHAT KIND OF SOUND DOES THE BAND HAVE NOW? BACK IN THE DAY, BAMA STATE NEVER REALLY USED MELLOPHONES OR BARITONES. HELL, WE DID NOT EVEN HAVE MARCHING BARITONES.

AS FOR SMITTY AND DUNCAN. YOU RIGHT, THEY CAME AROUND. MAYBE ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS. NOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN IN TWO HOURS EVERY TWO WEEKS?

LASTLY, I KNOW HE WAS SET UP FOR FAILURE. YEAH, HE HAD ****ED UP WAYS, BUT DONT EVERYBODY? I KNOW THAT HE WORKED HIS BUTT OFF TO MAKE THAT BAND WHAT IT WAS.

THE WAY I FEEL IS THAT I WOULD PUT CHAPMAN'S 99 BAND AGAINST ANY BAND FROM ASU FROM 92 TO PRESENT. AND THATS REAL.

The only thing I can think of when I think of Chapman is Lately (I liked that) and that ****ed up champaigne glass, DUKE drill Bama State did (probably the worst field show I ever seen from Bama State). I could see him as a good assistant but not quiet ready for a head job.

Now first of all. The was not messed up(the drill). it might have been the wrong game for it but we executed it to a tee. That ish was real. look at it for real .
Lastly how the hell did ASU vs Su 97 get on to ASU vs AAMU 99 come out on this sithsh?

BOY, IM WITH YOU ON THAT. ITS WAY OF TOPIC. BUT CHAPMAN WROTE MANY SONGS THAT WAS THE SH*T. JAMAICA FUNK, TOGETHER AGAIN, ESPN, JUST TO NAME A FEW.

BY THE WAY, THE CHAMPAYNE GLASS WAS PROBABLY THE BEST AND HARDEST DRILL I DID AT BAMA STATE. MAYBE THE WRONG GAME, BUT THE DRILL DID GET HOUSE.

Me knowing cats from State that feel this way is why I believe what I believe along with the fact of instrumentation change. But it is what it is..

I would put 99 ASU up against any ASU band I've seen live and on tape.

AIIGT. FIRST OFF, I WAS A SECTION LEADER UNDER BRAY AND KEPT THAT POSITION UNDER BRAY. I DONT THINK I GOT THAT POSITION JUST BECAUSE IM FROM MOBILE.

You are right on that.........you were a hell of a player and a hard worker.....will never deny that.

AS FOR THE SU SOUND THAT YOU SAID WE HAD, TO ME , THAT WAS PROBABLY THE BEST ALABAMA STATE SOUNDED IN YEARS.

Which years?

BY THE WAY, WHAT KIND OF SOUND DOES THE BAND HAVE NOW?

A good one. My opinion. They have their ups and downs.

BACK IN THE DAY, BAMA STATE NEVER REALLY USED MELLOPHONES OR BARITONES. HELL, WE DID NOT EVEN HAVE MARCHING BARITONES.

We did from 96-present. And that was due to Bray's efforts. I was there when they got delivered.

AS FOR SMITTY AND DUNCAN. YOU RIGHT, THEY CAME AROUND. MAYBE ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS. NOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN IN TWO HOURS EVERY TWO WEEKS?

Nothing, you are right again........but you do know why right???

LASTLY, I KNOW HE WAS SET UP FOR FAILURE. YEAH, HE HAD ****ED UP WAYS, BUT DONT EVERYBODY? I KNOW THAT HE WORKED HIS BUTT OFF TO MAKE THAT BAND WHAT IT WAS.

THE WAY I FEEL IS THAT I WOULD PUT CHAPMAN'S 99 BAND AGAINST ANY BAND FROM ASU FROM 92 TO PRESENT. AND THATS REAL.

I can respect your opinion but um......99's band would have got waxed by
92, 94, 96, 97 and especially 98!!!! 99 had sound but field presence wasn't the best.

As for the classic drill in 99, i'm sorry..........wrong game, and the show to me was worst than the 97 show that this thread is about. Carry on :swink:
BTW.......see yall Sat. after next. Snap, Snap,........................Driveeeeeeeeeeeee
