Southern QB Lewis quits team

Southern fifth-year senior quarterback J.C. Lewis has left the team, head coach Pete Richardson confirmed Tuesday.

Lewis met with Richardson on Monday afternoon, two days after Lewis stayed on the bench for the second straight game. SU did not practice Monday, returning to the practice fields Tuesday without Lewis for the first time since he came to school in 2003.

?He decided it?s in his best interests that he doesn?t want to play anymore,? Richardson said.

Known for his cool demeanor, Lewis was Southern?s top starter the last two seasons and was one of two team captains last season.

However, Lewis missed two games after suffering from concussions and, after regaining his starting role Nov. 4 (after two appearances off the bench), he injured his shoulder making a block in the second quarter and never played in a game again.

After the shoulder injury, Bryant Lee came off the bench to lead a 34-17 win over Texas Southern and since has gone 3-1 as a starter, winning his last three starts, including two this season.

?He was one of the most courageous quarterbacks to ever play here,? SU offensive coordinator Mark Orlando said of the culmination of hits Lewis took. Lewis was also sacked 28 times in nine games in 2005.

Lewis? departure brings an end to a career that was once so full of promise.

Lewis finishes as the school?s sixth-best all-time passer, with 3,667 yards (335-for-536, 62.5 percent, with 30 touchdowns to 16 interceptions). Early last season, he seemed poised to reach the top three by the end of his career................

This is sad on many levels. I think he would have finished in the top 2 if he would have started this season.

Talkin about throwin a player under the bus for no reason? Wow!!:smh::smh:

The kid made a decision. I said from the beginning that the way stuff went down and what was in the paper, I would have not played at all either. I give him credit for even trying to come out there knowing Orlando had his 2 qbs picked. Once Oliver got fired, I knew JC would be in trouble. I just don't like the way it all turned out. He is a nice and smart young man. But the blame game at this stage will not help matters. We did not set up our offense to fit JC's talent. Quite frankly none of our schools in the SWAC fit his talent. He needed a coach who run first, let him do play action, go deep(he has a pretty thrown ball) and maybe just roll him out somewhat. Most of our teams have Qbs that can really run. Luke at A&M, Oliver at JSU, Landers is pretty mobile at GSU, etc etc. The next thing JC needed was an OL that could block. He didn't get that. So I blame Pete, Oliver and not so much Orlando because we all know what kind of Qb he likes. JC needed to be on the 96 and 97 teams that Jacoby lead. Jacoby didn't throw the ball alot because we had Wofford, Williams, Dain Lewis and Ryan Lewis all on the team. Loaded backfield. The OL was solid. But hell Orlando rather have had Sam George on the field than Jacoby so the rest was history. B. Lee and the Matthews kid are Orlando type Qbs. Pete should have forced a change to the offense when JC turn came to start. But he didn't. The sad thing is Oliver got caught up in all that pass happy crap too even with Orlando gone to TxSU. Richard and Ricks spoiled him.

Nah Beans, the way we got B. Lee running the rock.......we would have gotten JC killed this year. That is not his game. That kid is a pure passer and he needed to play in a different type of offense. I feel for JC. Because he could have lit the SWAC up in the right offense. But Pete and Orlando are joined at the hip. I also blame Oliver because he had the chance with Orlando being gone to change the offense to fit JC's style. Instead they played him like we had Ricks at 6'4 and Richard at 6'3 back there.

I understand JR, but this kid gave his all for this team. He should have been able to start or placed in the game to show that he can still lead this team. To sit on the bench for 2 games straight shows that the coaches does not care for him or what he did for or brought to the team at all.

Man you know damn well Pete trying to save his job bruh. He aint got no loyalty to anybody right now. I don't know what went down this summer, but once JC did not come to that voluntary camp with the rest of them Qbs and missed most of spring practice because he was trying to graduate(which I don't blame him) I knew Pete and Orlando were going to go in a different direction. Now what I was shocked at is that he slid down to 3rd string. I feel bad for JC. But the way Lee is playing right now, I don't blame him for wanting to leave the team. Especially the way Orlando is gushing over the Matthews kid too. Just an unfortunate thing.

So this is his punishment for trying to graduate?

JC Lewis was a cool dude at qb position...What makes me proud (as a graduate of an HBCU) is that this young man understands the meaning of the term student-athlete. Let's not act like this doesn't happen all the time, but rarely does it happen to a guy who was productive as a starter but fell out of favor because the scheme doesn't fit his style.

The good news is that the young man is already in Graduate school...He might not be able to go pro as a quarterback, but he can "go pro" with his education. Best wishes to him as he pursues the rest of his life's ambitions!

PS: Right...click...save topic of thread for future smack!

And that is the part I'm talking about. The guy was productive and to be honest, it's happening with us but Jimmy O hasnt slipped all the way down the chart.

Talk about what you know, NOT what you think you know...

I agree that JC has a good arm and all, but he didn't fit in the offensive scheme and he made TOO many mental mistakes. 62% completion and a 2-1 TD-to-INT ratio doesn't seem bad on paper, but the bottom line is wins and losses. Let us check the history:

PV game 2006: He threw pick on the first passing play from scrimmage and didn't make good decisions late in the game.

NCCU game 2006: He threw like 3 picks in the first quarter.

Alcorn game 2006: He threw like 3 more picks before getting yanked.

He'll be a good professional whatever, he just didn't perform well consistently enough to remain the starter.

Jimmy will be back in the starting position before midseason and certainly before this season is over with.

Y'all will find anything to try and degrade SU about. The young man was a great player for us and for the little time I was around him, he showed that he was a good man, student, and teammate.

Now, while I would have liked to see him get another shot, once the offense was changed at the end of last year, this was not an offense I would have liked to see him in. It is a compliment to him for what he was able to do for those two years in Oliver's offense, which was also truly not an offense for Lewis.

Richardson made a decision and went with what he thought was best for his team .... so far, I can't argue with him. I just wish he had either done this in the offseason so if Lewis wanted to continue his career so where else, he could. But, honestly, I couldn't see that working anywhere else in the SWAC either with the offenses that are run.

I wish him all the best in his future endeavors and once again THANK him for the two years he gave to Southern.

Now, with that said, him leaving ain't helping none of the rest of you so why are you gushing on here like him leaving is going to all of a sudden make the rest of these kids forget their mission ...... the TOUR continues my friends.

So this is his punishment for trying to graduate?

No not at all. I think his fate was sealed this summer after he had graduated this spring. All the other Qbs were in camp before the team reported. Tough situation Beans. All I can say if it was me, I would have went to class and graduated........but I think I would have been there all summer trying to show them fools I can still play. I wouldn't have given my competition the edge by not being there. The spring stuff was no big deal. I think it was the summer school thing that did him in with Orlando and Pete. One thing about Orlando........he is hell on Qbs. He just don't care who you are. Randall, George, Jacoby, T. Williams, Levy, Richard, Ricks stayed in his doghouse and now JC. B. Lee better keep playing at a high level too. Orlando is just like that. But again I place alot of blame on former OC Oliver who had control of the offense before Orlando came back. He should have implemented one that fit JC talents. But he got too pass happy with no good blocking schemes or running game. Then you got Pete. He is under the gun to win. So he is going back to his roots in the playcalling.

All with a serious concussion that nobody knew about?

Honestly, I believe the coaches had a kid who was unsure about what he wanted to do. So do you keep your team in a O-style that best fits the probably returning starting QB...and oh...we got news that 2 of our stalwarts on the O-line are flunkin out? I believe the HEAD COACH made a hard decision based upon what he had in camp and who he knew would be there. Hard call, but somebody gotta be the chief.

As far as JC, he definitely didn't appear to be in any football shape in B'ham, but hell, he ain't the first to quit the team and chose academics. My boy QB Herman Coleman did the same back in 84 and so did many other fine athletes during those years. Not that they weren't tough enough, but sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!

Good Luck JC and I hope that if football is still in your heart that at least you can be a grad assistant since we STILL don't have a QB coach.

So who's the back up if the kid you have now gets hurt???

Warren Matthews #11 was already the backup. JC was 3rd on the depth chart this season. I imagine if CJ Byrd is healthy he will move in the 3rd spot now. He was the QB that played alot last year when JC got hurt. Also there is a R-Fr kid from Gulfport (Holliman) who may move up if CJ can't go at 3rd string. I don't think JC would have quit had he been 2nd string. But to be behind a kid who has never played until the 4th qter in the FAMU game was probably too much to deal with. Can't say I blame him for that.

Pete and his crew is so dam sad........

:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I'm just gonna stay quiet on this subject for now......
