<MCC STORY>The Southern University women's bowling team has come full circle, so to speak.

With freshman Sarah Circle and three seniors leading the way, Southern begins play today in Houston in the inaugural NCAA National Collegiate Bowling Championship. Coach Karen Couvillon started the Southern bowling program seven seasons ago with walk-ons. But she quickly began recruiting nationally and now has her best team.
 
Championships, Day One

HOUSTON -- Day one of the inaugural women's bowling national championships at the Emerald Bowl in Houston started with perfection and ended with reflection...that of a banner opening round of action for the inaugural NCAA championship for the sport.

The eight teams faced each other in seven games of regular team bowling, and only the total pinfall from Thursday's action will be combined with the pinfall from seven three-game baker matches in session three of the championships on Friday morning to determine the seeding for the remainder of the tournament.

Beginning Friday, April 9 at 2:30 pm, session four will open the double-elimination portion of the championships, when schools will square off in three rounds of baker games in a best 4-out-of-7 format. In baker games, the five bowlers on a team each will play two frames of a traditional 10-frame game.

The University of Nebraska ended day one with the total pinfall lead at 7633, followed by Central Missouri State University (7587), Sacred Heart University (7562), New Jersey City University (7439) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (7390) to round out the top five. Southern University went 6-1 in head-to-head action, but sits in sixth place in the pinfall standings (7264). Maryland Eastern Shore (7061) and Winston-Salem State University (5420) are seventh and eighth, respectively, after day one.

Central Missouri State, Nebraska, Fairleigh Dickinson and New Jersey City have survived day two of the tournament. The four schools will bowl for the first-ever national championship on Saturday.

Great way to represent the SWAC in the inaugural championship. Our two best bowlers are only fresh and soph so expect this team to be even better next year.

I don't usually get excited about bowling but currently this is the SWAC's best shot at a national championship.

I think only 42 schools have bowling teams but with the newly created championship more will probably jump in the ring. Hopefully the SWAC can win one of the first championships.
 
Congrats to the ladyjags for a great year and finishing fifth in the nation. Thats the way to represent the swac. :tup: :tup:

What I was referring to was that in Bowling, wins don't really count as much as pin count. So, as it was, SU was 6-1 and in first place, but 6th overall due to lower pin counts. I think the highest score on the SU team was a 251, or something, we would have needed a few more of thoughs scores on the team, (at the same time) to add to our pin count.

I understood what you were reffering to but as I understood coach Couvillion explanation of the bakers rule it was just the opposite. I could be wrong.

Well no, you could be correct. When I read the article it mentioned the pin counts as being the strongest factor in what determines the rankings 1-4 which is where SU needed to be. That is why I mentioned it in that manner. As a matter of fact, thats what Couvillion said that strengthend the Bakers format. Every bowler will bowl a frame, so you need your best bowlers at certain frames, namely the first, as your lead off bowler and the fifth, your anchor, that will bowl the fifth frame as well as the most important tenth.

For a team championship maybe but not an individual national championship: track & field
