looks like the SWAC title game will be a game with two top-ranked teams
NOTE: Sheridan Poll looks like it'll be out tomorrow...

Wouldn't it have looked better it this thread were titled:
Bama State No. 20 in Sports Network Division I-AA Poll

well...Bama State cracked the poll last week...so that was the new thing last week...With teams losing and them winning, it would've been only natural for them to move up in the polls...

besides, Southern was ranked in some Division I-AA top 25s prior to the season starting, so them returning to the polls is the new thing.

However, if Bama state would've jumped up to No. 1 ...then that would've been the title of the thread...

hell, better yet...should've renamed the post..why a team southern beat is ranked higher than them...or why is Albany State number one in the Sheridan Poll....or SWAC title game could possibly be one of the better games of the Division I-AA post season.

Well looking at the both teams' whole body of work, ASU has one loss, a 1 pt come from behind win by Southern, whereas Southern lost to a suspect McNeese team and a S. Dakota St. team in its 1st year in 1-AA that Southern should have blown out.

Now, I'll co-sign that.

I agree fully with what you're saying. I personally say all three ranked HBCUs should be a little higher in the polls (but we all know there are other forces at work)..heck SC State could be ranked by this time next week.

Barring any catastrophes, this year's SCG should be the biggest, and best since the first one. If Bama State and Southern run the table...that'll set up a game with two ranked teams...and given the "revenge game" angle this game will have, there should be a good deal of buzz heading into this game.

Can we get Mach or PNeck to check how many times both participants in the SCG were ranked in the Top 25 heading into the game?

I just hope like hell it isn't raining and freezing this year at Legion (I am going though).

I'll do it tonite after I get these three Utes to bed....

I hope that this years SCG gets a lot of advertisement and all the hoopla that went on with the MCC. Both teams getting a fireworks show, smoke, bubbles, the whole nine-yards as they enter the field. The MCC felt like a Super Bowl atmosphere.

Yeah Hornetswarm..like I said, there should be a helluva lot of build-up leading into this game...there are built in storylines from the Oct. 2 game in the Gump, along with the winner possibly becoming BCF nat'l champions.. But, as you know with our people, weather dictates a lot of activities.

If it's in the upper 50s with no rain...it should be a great gameday atmosphere

Here goes:

1999
In the last poll before the SCG, also before a BC win, SU was ranked 10th and Jackson State was ranked 14th.

2000
In the last poll before the SCG, before a BC loss, GSU was ranked 13th and AAMU was unranked.

2001
All I have from this point on are the final polls (after the SCG), in which GSU was 8th in one poll and 11th in the other. Alabama State was unranked.

2002
After the SCG, Grambling was 8th in both polls, AAMU unranked.

2003
After the SCG, SU was 13th in one poll, 14th in the other. Alabama State was unranked.

So I guess the answer to the question would be yes, once. In 1999, both participants of SCG I were ranked.

Basically the question should have been, "Have any East teams been ranked going into the SCG?", because the West representative always is both ranked and from Louisiana.

Somebody help me to understand something. Last week, SU was number 2 in this poll. This week, after having been idle, they fall to number 3. How can a team fall in the rankings while being idle?

By the time the SCG comes around both Albany and Hampton will probally be eiliminated from the playoffs. It probally depends on how bad they look in the playoffs that determines weather everyone wants to give the winner of the SCG thier just reward. I hate to root against HBCU's but I have to look out for my schools intrest first.

Big Thunder,

Southern has never been any higher than #3 in this poll.

enswac,

I have to agree with you on that, especially since the SCG could possibly come down to #1 Southern vs #2 Alabama State  if Albany St. & Hampton were to lose in the playoffs. That would mean that the SCG would not only determine SWAC Champs, but the Black College National Champion as well.

If that were to happen, it would be HUGE. Combine that with a reasonably nice weather day, and Legion Field just might look like it did a few weeks ago. Packed.

It should happen because they have certainly penalized the depending BCFNC for losing to two PWC. And, I know doggone well Albany State would not be no dam_ 1st place team in the west or eastern division of the SWAC. I also do not believe that Hampton would have any less than two losses..........but we shall see

This isn't anything new. In fact it happens all the time. In most poll across the board the athletic directors, coaches, and writers will vote for a team or even teams rather than the team that was idle. So often times the team that was idle will drop a spot in the new poll.

Deuce: You are incorrect. Southern was ranked #2 in last week's poll; see the link below. For convenience, I also pasted the rankings from last week. With that, my question still stands; how can you lose ground during a week when you are idle?

You're confusing two separate polls. The poll that was shown earlier in the thread was the Sheridan poll for ALL HBCUs. The poll you've shown is the Calvin Cuts Poll on TSPN for I-AA HBCUs. Southern was never ranked #2 in the Sheridan poll, but they were #2 in the TSPN poll last week.
