SoCon Loses TV Deal

The Southern Conference's partnerships with public television stations to show league sporting events will not have a second year. Instead, the SoCon's only deal is with ESPN3.com, commissioner John Iamarino said.

Last summer, he announced the league had a three-year plan with public television systems in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as an agreement with ESPN3 for games to be shown online. The league could strike deals only with WTCI in Chattanooga and a local channel in Birmingham to service the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Samford markets.

Iamarino told the Times Free Press last month that the SoCon wanted its games televised statewide in all five states within the league footprint. If that didn't happen, he said, the conference would move forward without a TV deal.

And that's what has happened.

You couldn't wait to post this one huh?

LOL. Pops it just validates the argument that FCS football overall aint what folks care about in this nation. I know WHITE folks who went to FCS level or even mid level FBS schools for undergrad but either root for the big PWC in their state, go to there games and support them more than their own school. I went to grad school with a bunch of them who became Ohio State fans first over there own school. If you didn't know they went to another school before Ohio State. You would think that was their alma mater undergrad on through. LOL.

FCS ball is the red head step child of the NCAA. Now I am not saying the SWAC should not try to get better or our schools should not schedule better or try to get better marketing deals. But just being a realist. FBS football is all America cares about. They don't want to see our brand of football on TV for the most part. That's why I appreciate the TV we do get. Do I wish it was more? Yes! But we all know money drives all. Why you think the NCAA big dogs done finally agreed to a 4 team playoff. THE MONEY. No money in FCS. So that means not to many TV deals.

JR, this is absolutely true and especially in the last 10 years, FCS has increasingly become less attractive. They should just do away with the division and make it like basketball. If you can't hang with FBS rules, then go D2. This would also end these stupid 1-A vs 1-AA games.

Very interesting.

Just yesterday, I was reading about how the SEC television deal could soon pay each team around $40 million PER YEAR. Up from the $20 million they get now.

Then, this comes out showing how things work on the other end of the scale.

Good to see the people with the "if its white" attitude get slammed with some realism, along with the ones that throw their own under an 18 Wheeler. lol

We won't be satisfied until we are completely off TV and hoping for an ESPN3.com time slot.

the major demographic at the FCS school is usually ashamed of their FCS school when they have to sit in the room with their BCS counterparts, they grow up hoping and praying to get into the big state school and usually go to the FCS types if their dreams fall thru

walk on a typical Saouthland campus, La Tech, ULM, etc and you'll see more A&M, UT, or LSU shirts on

Alot of blacks will want to go to HBCUs from the jump...it only begins to become a dream for blacks to go to the BCS level when athletics or major money is involved

Co-sign what TBF is saying. One of the reason that a lot of the more successful FCS programs are the ones who are the big dogs in their state. Like Delaware or the Montana schools along with the Dakota schools. Their fans have pride and don't care about other schools in their state because they are the flagship schools. In the South were football is king. No FCS school is the big dog in their state. They may have a lot of students and more money athletically than we do. But a lot of their students all wish they could have gone to big state U. Don't let them go to grad school at one of the bigger schools and you will never know where they went undergrad. LOL.

:emlaugh: It's like a birthright....you try and wear a Jackson State shirt at Southern? Come on...but its culturally accepted to wear the big state school shirt at the other FCS schools....weird

But that's how whites also treat schools where they may have went that turned minority or neighborhoods......alot of the inner city schools in Houston were white but finding alumni who went there and will claim it is like finding a needle in a haystack. Have the folks at Madison looked funny at the whites who wanted to claim the school when Vince Young was winning in the playoffs....half the people in Houston don't know South Park was predominately white as Jones and Sterling was built for them.

This is true. I chose to go to Valley. I could have went to MSU and Ole Miss (I also could have went to JSU and PVU but thats besides the point lol).

There are a lot of UM/MSU wanna be's 5 miles down the road from me at MDCC lol

Note that I am thinking aloud.

Come to think of it, I am not surprised. Sure, the Southern Conference is second in attendance, but with the deals and moves that the big schools are making, I am not shocked. Think about it like this. With the changes with the big schools in the next few years, I expect the smaller schools (SWAC included) to get squeezed one way or another.

The squeeze may not happen this year, but I would not be surprised if it to happen eventually.

However, I am reminded of the size of our fan base.

This is true about the FBS and FCS football. I too think that our schools should get better, schedule better, and try to get better marketing deals. I think that we can.

As I have said many times, we, the SWAC, have the fan base that they do not have. I would like for us to take advantage of it. Remember. The SWAC has led in attendance in 1-AA/FCS each year with the exception of 2005 when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the gulf coast.

I am not surprised. In Georgia many students at Georgia Southern, Valdosta State, and Georgia State are Georgia Bulldog fans. Many of them are Bulldog fans first and foremost.

One will see on an HBCU campus someone with a big school shirt or cap. However, those from our schools are fans of our schools first and foremost. Many HBCU grads cheered Norfolk State (men) and Shaw (women) in basketball.

I am not surprised. Boise State was 1-AA and is in the capitol city of Idaho.

I didn't begrudge the SWAC's tv deal but this occurrence does bring a question to light.

What are the revenue reports for the FCS conferences? I'd like to see where the SWAC lies, I mean, attempts to substantiate its revenues.

How is it sad?

All he did was ask to see the numbers so that he may compare conferences.

How does wanting to see the numbers make him a Clarence Thomas clone? :noidea:
