Should School Board Members have...

some years of certified teaching experience? I asked this question because here in Little Rock and Pulaski County they have had at least 3 superintedents fired or resigned because of power struggles with the school board who have no, I mean absoulutely no professional educational experience in public schools as a teacher. In one school district in East Arkansas, there are board members who are convicted felons and some alcoholics on the board. Here in Arkansas school board members are elected by the public.

When I was a newspaper reporter, I covered education and attended many school board meetings in Hinds County. From my observations of watching that school board and many other school administrators and teachers in a few different districts (like JPS, Madison County and Rankin County), I don't think it should be mandatory for the whole school board to be certified in teaching.
I do think it would be good have to someone on the board who has that classroom experience though. Overall, I think it needs to be people who are seriously professional-minded and have a sincere objective of doing what's really best for the students.

I believe the Dallas Independent School District must be full of ex-cons and alcoholics, cuz they don't do anything but fight at meetings. You should see some of the news reports on it...it's a real shame. :shame:

Now, to answer your question, I don't believe they necessarily need a teaching background, but at least have a background and/or knowledge of the educational field and be professional, w/NO criminal record(s).

Don't we all wish that were true for politicians, too. Convicted felons can be politicians but can't vote.... :(
yes lawd...that's why our laws are so screwed up now.

Damn shame...:smh:

I would say no. But as someone who has been in the classroom on the college level, I feel it would sure help.

She ain't lying!

Not saying they should have teaching experience but they should have more than a high school education. They should be some sort of professional within the community not someone that works on the night shift at the 7-11.

Judges are elected in their respective districts;and just as judges are required to have some qualifications,I think school board member should have some qualifications more than just a high school education.I think it would help also if a board member held some previous post in leadership position in an educational status.
