Should a preacher smoke?

Yes a Preacher can smoke. This reads like the start of "Is smoking a sin, question."

Why dont you think a preacher should not smoke.

:)

It's hard to give a general answer. That preacher needs to pray about it my opinion would not to promote anything known for killing people before their time and destroying kids lungs.

Smoking seems to not do any good for anyone except 'relaxing' them or giving them some kind of 'peace' or 'releasing stress' or whatever but all of these things we should be able to get from God.

Let's list what people get from smoking and see if anything is listed that God can't provide in a more 'non-witness hurting' way.

First off Happy B-Day Bro. I saw that it was the other day but did not have time to Post anything. :)

I like your List. Too Bad it will be a very short List. We know God can do it all. Except make this list long.

Thanks docmump, I'm 25yr now so my car insurance is going down. :) At first when I saw you had posted, I thought you were going to 'get me' for talking against smoking but I guess you took it easy on me this time.;)

No not this time. I dont smoke. But I know some smoking Ministers. I know it is not a Sin but it is a matter of health. You hit all the points that I would have hit.

Most do it in order to relax and calm their nerves. I believe that ALL people should not smoke.

:)

First...why do we put ministers on a pedistal higher than what they should be. We all need not to smoke. I am elated to say that I have been delivered from this nasty habit for almost five years!!! Thank you Lord! I just hate when people say it's ok for the "regular" people to do one thing and ministers have to be "holier than thou". We all should try to live up to God's requirements.

Romans 12:1-2
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1 Corinthians 3:17
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1 Corinthians 6:19
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

While smoking like drinking is not a sin. But, they cause health serious problems. If your body is the temple of God, it should be kept clean physically as well as spiritually.

H,
While Drinking is not a Sin, but Too Much Drinking is a Sin.

And Blu has given us some good scriptures. but it does not relate to smoking, driking, or Tatooes. These scriptures are about "Working for the Lord." Paul is begging us to be a "Living Sacrifice". That we be about our First Works of the Chruch.

He uses words like Sacrifice and Temple, where the sacrifices were made, to inspire us to work hard for the Lord.

:)

I made the comment not to judge a preacher but to clarify an issue. Brothers and sisters in the ministry do have a image to uphold though. True smoking and drinking are not sins but if you crave something that harms you, that couldn't be right. So what is the difference in smoking a cigarette and smoking weed? (I don't smoke anything but meat on a grill:D!!!!) Some weed smokers say that weed is from the earth!! And What God made can be used by man.

The whole thing to me is that To be a messenger of the lord, the messenger must do as the Jesus did, LIVE A PERFECT LIFE!!!

smoking is a sin because your body is like holy and if u polute it with smoke u r not treating your body with the respect as if its Gods property. We all sin, just because u preach does not mean u free from sin. but to answer the question. No one should smoke!

I agree. I wonder when is gluttony going to be thought of in the same fashion starting with a note to myself.

I HATE CIGARETTES!!!

ANytthing that has to do with cigarettes should be banned. NO preachers should NOT smoke...It puts others in danger if they smoke in front of others. Some people are influenced by something that easliy.

Preachers should NOT smoke ...

... and neither should anyone else. Smoking is a disgusting habit. It killed my father, and will probably kill my stupid brothers (I call them that because I can). Tobacco ought to be outlawed. It is as addictive as marijuana. I pray for my nieces every day, because their mother (she's stupid, too) smoked while she was pregnant, and they both have minor respiratory problems, and their stupid parents still smoke.

Smoking is a stupid habit, and people who smoke with reckless disregard to what it does to their health and the health of the people they claim to love are stupid, and I pray for them every day, too.

Nope, I'm far from perfect, but this thread ain't about me, it's about smoking and preachers.

Why Preachers should not smoke.

1. They have to be around too many people.

2. Hospital Visits. Can the patient stand the smoke on his clothing?

3. Smokers cannot get rid of the scent.

4. People who don't smoke cannot stand to be near the preacher.

I didn't hire any smokers, if I knew it.

This Thread is not dead yet??

If smoking is a sin, so is drinking coffee. The caffeine in coffee is more addictive than nicotine. I have always been troubled, on how people tar and feather individuals that smoke, drink or take drugs. If you drink coffee, tea, and cola or eat large amounts of chocolate, you're using a drug. Believe it or not, caffeine has the same pharmacological effects on the body as many of the substances we associate with doing harm. Coffee is accepted by society without question. Why? $$$$$. Coffee / caffeine is highly addictive and cause withdrawal symptoms if anyone stop drinking it suddenly, research shows that even a little bit of coffee may reduce fertility by damaging sperm. It's also bad news if you're pregnant. Research has shown caffeine seems to affect the amount of time the baby spends resting, which could lead to abnormal behavior later on.

Smoking A cigarette, drinking A cup of coffee, smoking A joint won't too much harm you and is probably not a sin.

On the other hand,
1) Smoking your health away EVERYDAY until you develope lung cancer, is a SIN. Activity that makes your lungs Black, and makes young kids around you develope breathing problems is not the Will of God.
2) Drinking so much coffee that it has a negative effect on your body or on your unborn child, is a SIN. (don't think large amounts of coffee will give you cancer)
3) Eating a meal is not a sin, but gluttany is.

Remember that a lot of things aren't sin, but aren't profitable either. Anything done in EXCESS can be sin, whether food, smoking, drinking, etc. The issue of Excess is a Principle from the Bible, the Bible says that Wisdom is the Principle thing. Apply Wisdom to these Principle & Situations and probably some of them would cease to exist.

* So, is smoking a sin? .... just for those who do it everyday.;)

I cant believe we brought this thread back.

What!!!!! I can not believe I just read that.
Is Smoking A Cigeratte A day a Sin? Is that to Excess?
No it is not. Excess is can also be defined as adictive. I believe that if you are adicted to smoking i.e. cant give it up. Then you are sinning under the rule of Excess. But other than that Smoking Everyday is not a sin.

Lets keep this simple people, The Gos' Laws are not meant to be confusing. That is the Devil's job. See I Cor 14:33 For a reference.

So Smoke your cigeretts, drink your drinks, Dont Smoke a Joint. But dont do any of these things to excess.

:D

Watch, (I think)
IF Smoking A cigarette A Day, 2 cigarettes A day, 3 or a pack a day causes someone to get sick or even die of Lung Cancer before their time, That IS Sin/Excess For That Person.

The question is not, "is smoking a sin?"
The real question is, "What is the safe amount that I can smoke before it slowly becomes deadly/sinful?
or
"What percentage (0% - 100%) of my lungs has to shut down before I consider it excess? Will 1 a day do that?" (Eventually! People are only comfortable if they smoke less than their 3-pack a day friend. But that just means one will develop problems quicker than the other.)
or here's a good question
"Have I prayed about this, what has God told me?"

From talking to people, we see that the 'world' smokes to relieve stress, become calm in various situations, Pier pressure, or because they're addicted. Since a Christian uses God for all of those thing, let's list the Reasons why Christians smoke:

1) _______________________
2) _______________________
3) _______________________

Also, why are people trying to stop/wish they never started if there's nothing WRONG with it?
1) _______________________
2) _______________________
3) _______________________

The Devil, I believe, will present "Flesh Driven Desires" with the e-v-e-n-t-u-a-l goal of killing us Christians and we not only accept it, knowing that the end result for most who took that path was Death, but we also use Scripture to justify the activity. :(

Smoking constantly, makes your Lungs Black, your [b/]Health[/b] Bad, your Insides deteriorate, and your Breath smell like Who Let the Dogs Out! Woof!, woof woof - woof woof! :( ?.. period.

p.s. I Cor 14:33 - Isn't a Preacher telling you about a Holy Temple and then Voluntarily dying of lung cancer, Confusion? That scripture is what I've been trying to say. ;)

Well it's like this say the preacher is having an alter call for freedom of nasty habits and someone comes down who smokes. How can the preacher pray for that habit to be removed from that person if he is dealing with that same habit himself? The preacher can do whatever he wants in all honesty that's his decision everyone was born with free will. Smoking cigars, cigarretts(sp) it all boils down to everytime they inhale they are inhaling death. I call them death sticks cause that's what they are. So if a preacher is smoking and you see it you should be praying that the taste for that thing which only can cause death be removed from him and that he no longer wants that thing.

smoking is a sin because your body is like holy and if u polute it with smoke u r not treating your body with the respect as if its Gods property.

I have a question where in the Bible does it say that? I'm not doubting you but I want to know where this is. If that was the case then If i went to eat some greasy fatning fast food would I be sinning? All that grease is not good for my heart cause it can clog my arteries up......just the same as smoking can slowly hinder the way you intake oxygen. Not trying to cause confusion I just wanna know where this is thats all.

We were all BORN with our own free will BUT Christians are supposed to be BORN AGAIN accepting God's Will for us & the mind of Christ, & acknowledging we were are no longer our own to do what we want but rather "bought at a price" and now stewards of what God let us take of - Ro 12:2

I remember giving my friend a CD to use one time. I got it back days later with some of the tracks skipping and the CD case cracked. He misused it which upset me because I Bought it/Payed for it, not him. I expected him to take care of it and he scratched it up that's why I got mad.

God must feel that way about Christians sometimes. He bought us with a price and so we're His but 1 year after being Saved we have Tracks Skipping or maybe song #15 won't play at all.:bawling: When we present ourselves before God in prayer, He's probably like, "what happened to track 7 today, it doesn't play anymore. And who cracked your CD case?"

Can you blame God for being upset with us for misusing what He's only "loaning" us, our bodies? Excessive smoking, excessive eating bad food(or good food), excessive dranking, excessive whatever etc is misusing and abusing our bodies.
What is excessive for you? Ask God to tell you how many cigarettes He doesn't mind you smoking before it becomes sin. Ask Him how many "greasy burgers' you can eat before it becomes harmful / sin. How much alcohol you can drank before it become sin.

That's one of the reasons God is there, to answer His children's questions.;) Remember to be receptive of His answer.

I'm going to make it plain and simple. NO!
Read what the Bible says:

1 Corinthians 3
"16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6
"19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."

Now here is the question, do people that smoke ever light up inside the man made temple (i.e. church, mosque, etc.)? I think not. Why not? You may say that it's not respectful to smoke inside the church. My reply to that is so we should respect what man made but not respect what GOD made?

"Take it, or let it alone!"
