WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton jumped into the fray as a 2008 presidential candidate with the words "I'm in" posted on her Web site.

"And I'm in to win," she added in a statement, announcing she has set up an exploratory committee that can gauge opinions and raise money for a presidential campaign.

The former first lady and Democratic senator from New York is considered her party's front-runner in what has become a diverse political field. (Watch Clinton's offer to chat with voters as she launches her White House campaign Video)

Should she win, she would be the first woman to serve as president of the United States -- and the first presidential spouse to do so as well. President Bill Clinton served two terms -- from 1993-2001.

On Tuesday, Democrat Sen. Barack Obama announced that he was filing papers to form a presidential exploratory committee, a bid to become the first African-American president. (Full story)

And on Sunday, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, also a Democrat, is expected to announce his bid, one that could make him the first Latino president.

Bringing "the right end" to the war in Iraq, reducing the deficit, making the country energy independent and affordable health care were issues Clinton touted in her announcement, speaking on a video posted on her site.

"After six years of George Bush, it is time to renew the promise of America," she said.

"I grew up in a middle-class family in the middle of America, and we believed in that promise," the 59-year-old native of Chicago said. "I still do. I've spent my entire life trying to make good on it, whether it was fighting for women's basic rights or children's basic health care, protecting our social security or protecting our soldiers."

In the video, she invited Americans to join her in a three-night series of live video Web chats beginning Monday.

"So let's talk. Let's chat, let's start a dialogue about your ideas and mine, because the conversation in Washington has been just a little one-sided lately, don't you think?"

When Clinton launched an exploratory committee for her Senate bid in New York in 1999, she began a "listening tour" around the state to explore views on education, business and health care issues. Her Republican opponent, Rick Lazio, had criticized for being a carpetbagger because she had never lived in New York. But she wound up beating him, becoming the first sitting first lady to win an elected office.

CNN's John Roberts contributed to this report.

Excellent!!!!

I truly believe Obama should take a backseat and lobby if she wins the Democratic nominations to be her Vice Presidential running mate.

That would be an undefeatable ticket!

umm, don't bet on it. If either one of them get the nomination they would be good to pick a Mark Warner ( former VA Gov) or a Phil Bredesen ( current TN Gov).

Both of whom can carry their home states and have very good cross over appeal.

I been saying that's what he should do, just go on a ticket with her, and get experience and position himself for a Presidential run in the coming years. It would not only give him valuablle experience, but also allow him to make connections with other high ranking democrats.

I feel you with those two because whether we like it or not no two politicians are going to make the agreement that I stated above. Now if Obama did decide to step aside and become the running mate I would definitely cast my vote for them.

True. I'd add Bill Richardson(New Mexico gov) to that list as well. Richardson probably has the best credentials out of all the candidates.

To add to your picks John Edwards would make a good mate too!

This is gonna be very interesting. If Obama does not backdown, then the votes will definitely be split. I would love to see either of them as Pres though. Is America ready for either one though? A woman running the country or a black man running the country.

I'm just glad the Dems. finally have some worthwile candidates.

True. Yet my problem is they always split the ticket. You have Obama and Clinton, two excellent choices that quite frankly would do wonders for the country, yet one cannot or is not able to see that we could possibly have a Democrat as President for the 16 years.

The only front runner the Republicans have is John McCain.

All I will say is if it boils down to McCain or Clinton and/or Obama it will be a hard decision for me....

Never in my life would I want a black man to EVER take a back seat to anyone caucasion! :kaioken: :kaioken:

I agree.... he should run to WIN, not to be a running mate. If she gets the nomination and offers him the position, take it, but don't run with the mindset of taking a back seat.

Hillilary Clinton will not be President of the United States. Too many people dislike her for her to win.

It would not make any sense for her to pick Obama as a running mate, because he doesnt bring any votes to the ticket that she isnt going to get anyway. Its like when Gore chose Lieberman for VP he brought nothing to the Ticket that Gore wasnt going to get anyway. If he had chosen a Running mate from Ohio, or Florida, he would be president right now.

I been saying that for 6 years.
They ain't gonna here ya. :goof:

That's what I say - I believe that is the plan eventually. Looks like they are trying to fake out the Republicans...

It all depends on who she's running against. Hillary would have a hard time beating McCain, but she would have a chance against the rest of the Republican field. Especially if the Repubs nominate a right-winger like Brownback or a flip-flopper like Mitt Romney.

Also, the idea of choosing a VP to balance the ticket geographically is good in theory but bad in practice. You choose someone who shores up where you're weak - like Bush did with Cheney. Gore had an image problem being tied to the Clinton scandals so he choose the sqeauky clean Lieberman. Choosing someone from a particular state or region doesn't automatically mean you'll do well in that state.

Right now the most-qualified Democratic candidate is Bill Richardson. The candidate with that designation is usually a solid bet for VP.

Lieberman brought Jewish money to the Gore camp and Jewish votes in FL. That what put FL in play for the Dems in 2000.

I don't think the dems have worthwhile candidates, it is just the fact that the country is very sour on the GOP right now and any democrat has a chanc e to win.

As for Hilary, I'm sorry, but I can not, and will not ever vote for a woman to be the president. And on the joint ticket issue, why should Obama take a backseat to Clinton, she should be the VP on his ticket, if you ask me. Experience wise, they are about even. Being the First Lady doen't qualify as political experience in my opinion.
