...NT...these folks don't have any rhyme or reason to this ranking system...they only go with the won/loss record...they give no credit at all to the "strength of schedule"...nor do they care if you have beaten an opponent...

...Calm down and don't let these "mental-midgets" get to you!!!
...They can't help themselves...they suffer from the politicians sickness...

I think they are doing about the best they can do right now. Things are just begining to settle out. In about two weeks, we should see some good polls. This one is better than some of the ones they have put out earlier in the year.

Not true. I have more respect for TU's schedule and even Alabama State's schedule so far than I have for BCC. The four teams they have beaten this year have no more than 8 years combined in 1-AA. Two of the schools did not even have football programs two years ago.

This poll has some flaws but it is "OK". I can live it better than I can some other stuff I have seen.

..Here are the combined won/loss records of the "Ranked" Teams' OPPONENTS

1. Tuskegee>>>>>>>>>>>> 4-11(the Benedict game: 7-0 ot)
2. Grambling>>>>>>>>>>>> 7- 6( all Division I-AA opponents)
3. FAMU>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 8- 8(Miami is 4-0, you do the math)
4. Bethune CC>>>>>>>>>> 3- 13(all opponents: losing record)
5. South Carolina St>>>>>> 4- 11(two teams played are 0-8)
6. Fort Valley St>>>>>>>>>> 6- 7 (all Division II)
7. Ala. State>>>>>>>>>>>> 4-12(we kinda' knew this already)
8. Jackson State>>>>>>>>> 6- 9 (Division I teams A/AA)
9. Hampton>>>>>>>>>>>> 8-5 (all Division I-AA)
10. Alcorn>>>>>>>>>>>>> 7-5 (all Division I-AA)

...As you can see it is hard for you to reconcile how this is figured..
...I'll wait for some responses to this...I'll then try another analysis

Looking at it in a different perspective:

1. Tuskegee>>>>>>>>>>>> 4-11(the Benedict game: 7-0 ot) (bwtwstb)
2. Grambling>>>>>>>>>>>> 7- 6( all Division I-AA opponents)
(mm)
3. FAMU>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 8- 8(Miami is 4-0, you do the math)
(bwtwstb)
4. Bethune CC>>>>>>>>>> 3- 13(all opponents: losing record)
(bwtwstb)
5. South Carolina St>>>>>> 4- 11(two teams played are 0-8)
(mm)
6. Fort Valley St>>>>>>>>>> 6- 7 (all Division II)
(bwtwstb)
7. Ala. State>>>>>>>>>>>> 4-12(we kinda' knew this already)
8. Jackson State>>>>>>>>> 6- 9 (Division I teams A/AA)
9. Hampton>>>>>>>>>>>> 8-5 (all Division I-AA)
10. Alcorn>>>>>>>>>>>>> 7-5 (all Division I-AA)

bwtwstb - beat who they were supposed to beat!
mm - (maybe or maybe not)

Four of the top six are looking pretty good!

..You see now that's what I'm talking about...this is the way those folks on the SBN Poll are thinking & voting:rolleyes:

This poll is always screwed. I think we put too much emphasis on BCF polls. Again, and I will say it til Im blue in the face, they do NO research. The fact that Alcorn is not placed above Hampton is silly.

...And rightly so...however, as with all Polls they have "flaws"...and this particular one has a major one...attempting to rank different divisions...but anyway all of the schools that have a chance to be #1 in this poll have a chance to be the "mythical National Black Champion"....if the top two teams could play at the end of the season it would be more meaningful..I really think the Division II schools "cherish" being number one in the SBN because it validates them when they don't necessarily have to play the I-AA teams on the field...

...as Roy Wood used to say.."that's just ONE Black Man's OPINION

....What's YOURS????????????

Of course Sonic 98 there's no logical way for ranking teams in ANY Poll based purely on the opinion of the voters as this one is.

I personally don't think TU should be number one right now. That Benedict Game really should have hurt us in my opinion. As far as ranking D2 and D1AA teams in the same poll, I have no problem with it since in my opinion, the talent level on the field is comparable between the top teams in D2 and D1AA.

...This is the only statement I take issue with you...the SBN actually shows how the "weight" of the rankings are based by the fact that 8 of the 10 teams are I-AA(I'll stand corrected) Tuskegee is a "top" Div. II BCF program...other than your team what other Div.II(BCF) team has the talent level comparable to Tuskegee???

..Case in point: In 1998, Doug's 1st year at Grambling(rebuilding) the G-MEN took a Rag-tag team to SanDiego and beat an experienced Winston-Salem team. I would consider Winston a top team in the CIAA(& Div.II), but they could not beat a rebuilding 5-6 team...my point is "pound-for-pound" and across the board the talent level between II & I-AA is measurable!

Our next two games are against Sheridan Poll ranked Alabama State (9-28) and Fort Valley State (10-5). If we beat these two teams, there is no way humanly possible that we should be lower than 5.

...the G-MEN can do no wrong in the "eyes" of Sheridan:D

Looking at Alcorn's schedule, they "should" enter the Capital City Classic 9-1. This is going to be sooooooooooooooooooooo (you know the rest). They should easily be ranked no lower than third in the Sheridan by then.

G-Que,

First of all let's get some facts straight:

WSSU was by no means a top team in D2 in 1998. They were not ranked in D2 polls, and didn't even win the CIAA title in 1998 (That was won by Livingstone). So that example that you gave is not a good one. I would call them a top CIAA team now, but not in '98.

Right now in BCF the only 2 D2 teams I feel are deserving of being of the top ten are the two that are there now TU and FVSU. Beyond that the next teams from D2 are probably VUU, WSSU, and Morehouse (not necessarily in that order). I've watched too much football to back off of my statements concerning the level of talent on top D2 and top D1AA teams. The size is comparable, the speed is comparable, even the depth is comparable.

I'm glad you pointed out the number of teams from D2 vs. D1AA in the Sheridan poll. It should really put to rest the concern that the pollsters are only looking at record. The poll is weighted towards D1AA teams, and has been so the last few years. You are much more likely to be in this poll if you are D1AA than you are if you are D2.
