Seventh-Day Adventists

Do you know any Seventh Day Adventists? One of my closest friends is SDA.

The Branch Davidians of Waco, Texas with David Koresh were a radical branch of SDA.

Some SDA Info:

Beliefs:
Seventh-day Adventists follow most of the beliefs of conventional conservative Christianity: creation, the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, original sin; the virgin birth; the divinity of Christ; the nature of the Trinity; belief in Satan as a rebellious created being; the inerrancy of Scriptures as they were originally written; the resurrection of Jesus, salvation by the atonement of Christ, etc. However, they differ on a number of other beliefs:

Writings of Ellen White: Ellen White is recognized by the SDA church as having received the gift of prophecy. The written works by Ellen White , "are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction." 21 This produced some conflict within the Church when research in the 1980's showed that she had borrowed heavily from contemporary writers.

Immortality: They deny the concept of "innate immortality". They believe that a person is not naturally immortal. When a person dies, they remain unconscious until they are resurrected. Eternal life is a gift which God gives only to righteous Christians; the rest will be ultimately annihilated. Thus, they do not believe that a person goes to heaven or hell immediately upon death.

Jesus' return: The second coming of Christ is imminent. Believers should be ready at all times to be removed from earth to be with God in heaven; others will be destroyed by Christ. Righteous Christians who had previously died will be resurrected at that time and taken to heaven. For the following 1000 years, only Satan and his angels will be living on earth. A second resurrection will occur at the end of that period. The righteous will then return to a cleansed earth, and establish the New Jerusalem. The unrighteous who died before the Second Coming will be resurrected and be consumed by fire and by God, along with Satan and his angels. The universe will then be free of sin and sinners. Hell exists as a lake of fire where the unrighteous are "burned up, utterly destroyed, and cease forever to exist".

Hell does not exist as a place of eternal torment

so what exactly do you want to know about the Adventists?

they believe that Saturday is the true sabbath and probably do more to keep the sabbath than any other group of Christians that i am aware of

i have a lot of respect for them as a collective group

There is/was another group that was similar to SDA...and they are members of World Wide Church of God... Saturday was their HOLY day as well.

And if my reading serves me correctly, SOME of Jehovah's Witnesses and SDA all have origins with certain groups of muslims.

Yep, one of my homeboys is a SDA. Saturday would roll around and he would be at church. Of course, at the time I did not understnd going to church on Saturday, but that was years ago.

when i first formally exposed to the SDA, i had trouble understanding it too (coming from a Roman Catholic upbringing and a Methodist college education)

however, the beliefs are firmly rooted in Biblical tradition and writings and, although, i never considered "converting", i gained a lot of respect for how they do things and WHY they do things

*from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday sabbath is observed and when i say "observed", i mean OBSERVED: no secular activities are permitted, whatever is not done before the sabbath has to wait until sabbath is over

Christians, were never instructed to observe the Sabbath. That was an agreement between God and the Hebrews.

Interesting.

I see some similarities between what they believe and what the Jehovah's Witness believe.

I am not trying to be funny, what wouldn't this type of doctrine screw with your mind?

In the NT, the Apostles only taught on the Sabbath, because they knew the Jews observed the Sabbath and they would find them at the Synagogues worshipping.

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher Mt. 28:1

Now when [Jesus] was risen early the first [day] of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. Mt. 16:9

This is [Christian] Worship

And upon the first [day] of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. [Act 20:7]

Upon the first [day] of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as [God] hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. 1 Cor. 16:2

The teaching of the Bible is simple. The Law of Moses, included the sabbath commandment, was to the nation of Israel only. It lasted as a binding law until Christ died on the cross. The Law of Christ, which began at Pentecost, is God?s law for all mankind today.

The Law of Christ teaches that we are to meet on Sunday, the first day of the week. This is the day upon which our Lord arose from the dead (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2-6; Luke 24:1; John 20:1). The day upon which the church began, Pentecost day, also was on the first day of the week (Leviticus 23:9-16).

Also, Christ repeated all the commandments, but he never said keep the Sabbath. Now, he observed the Sabbath, because He lived during the OT and was under the law.

Now why folks do not understand that, is confusing to me.

Jesus is the Sabbath. If you have him, you have the sabath. He is God and created the Sabath. The bible talks about days of worship and foods you eat in the new testament. Non of those matter when you got Jesus. We are not under the law. Under Grace. The law is for the wicked (says the bible) For those who try to keep the law, they fail. No one is perfect. That is why we have jesus because his blood covers our failures. There for, all we have to do is accept him by doing what he wants us to do to prove we love him and to do everything out of love. Christians have the Law of Grace and what Grace covers. If Grace covered everything but the (sabbath) then all christians are in trouble. But according to Romans, Grace covers everything.

Christians are under the law as they are an extension from the Ten Commandments, to include the moral laws. However, we are not under the ?ceremonial and judicial? laws that regulated Israel worship and judicial system.

The moral law, known as the law of Christ, as it relates to Christians, is binding upon all.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. [Gal. 6:2].

There is no scripture tin the entire NT that teaches that Christians having nothing to do with the moral law.

The NT is full of ?Christian? Laws, for example.

Romans 3:3 ?Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea. We establish the law? meaning since we are justified by faith the law is not abrogated but established or enforced by that faith.

Husbands love your wives. This is a command, therfore, it is a law.

We are under the grace of God. Please provide scripture to ?Law of Grace? Grace, is not a ?law? but, a unmerited favor shown toward mankind from God.
