Seven-game slate possible for SWAC

Kendrick,

It would not matter if our presidents, chancellors, athletic directors, alums and boosters groups do not create an environment that supports financial stability in athletics.

I would rather SWAC schools mix in some more Top 25 Division 1-AA teams than Tuskegee or Tenn. State. That way our teams will have measuring stick games and earn a little respectability among the masses. SWAC schools have to realize eventually you have to go outside of their comfort zone and upgrade their opponents. That's why we keep getting hosed when it comes to TV deals and radio contracts. The networks are already telling us that the novelity of SWAC football has worn off. We need to play different teams and showcase them against quality competition. I don't think playing Tenn.St. or Tukegee makes the conference better finanically or athletically.

While Playing the Montana's and Furman's of the world would help eventually, we have to look at the bottom line with HBCU athletics ...... FINANCES. We have to cater to our fanbases to keep them. Those games are fine, but we can't abandon what our fans want either.

Oh yeah, and respectability .... we've been there and the NCAA 1-AA showed us how they felt by sending us to HoochieHaatchie, Idaho for first round games ....

I hope we can get this done. If some schools decide to add NAIA schools to their sked, then that's their choice. But at least we would have more options with the 7-game slate. And schools like Grambling who play Division I schools can schedule them.

The subject came up at the conference?s winter meetings this week. The presidents, who hold the power in the conference, will meet to decide on the format next month.

.

Why the delay? I thought that it "came up" in the Spring meeting and they were going to decide it this winter?? We need to stick with the 9-game mandate for the fall since they are waiting so late to decide. I am assuming that the big problem is going to be teams playing non-conference games. I am still a supporter of the strict 4+3 format. We have tried an unorganized 7-game format, the 9-game mandate, why not try the strict 7 game format. If we have 12 games (which I am also against), we can keep the mandate.

That's why I said AGAIN.
They ain't doing nothing but putting carrot's in front of our noses.

This ain't rocket science.
They don't intend to do nothing.

On another note:
How bad is it there has been 2 PLAYOFF SERIES and 2 NATIONAL CHAMP'S crowned before we crowned our conference champs.

Move the date back...............3rd week of December is too long to wait for this game.:goof:

Fiyah, Believe me I still wanna kick somebody ashy lip ass and some other geniuses for that mess.

These same presidents aint breaking their bond against this 9 game mess.

I want a 4 + 3 or all out 7 game mandate but I aint holding my breath. We all may be playing those schools that GR mentioned in his reply.

I'm not saying scratch the SWAC and play a radical one. I'm saying just change it up a little bit. You say the fans will not want schools to play different competition, but they don't come out in droves for conference games because it's the same dog and pony show every year. I think playing new teams will breathe a little bit of life into a dull schedule. Sure, fans are going to come to the classics, but what about the rest of the season? You would rather play a Division II team than a national championship caliber team? That's why the SWAC will continue to fall behind because they won't change and their fans won't change.

The problem we have as a conference is our schools depend on other schools to fill up our stadium. That is the reason (IMO) for the 9 game mandate. I say scrap the 9 game mandate, restrict the schools to only play 7 SWAC opponents and let each school fend for themselves on the remaining 5 games.

School like SU should do very good because they can get a cupcake or quality opponent to come in and pack their house. GSU can easily get a D1A away game(s). The rest of the schools will need to call some classic promoters or something. But this welfare needs to stop.

uh...welfare...if I could say what I want to say....:smh:...wouldn't be surprised if the SWAC forces UAPB to add the sports it doesn't have to field....that's a competitive advantage...

SU stadium might not be full every Saturday but you will see alot of people there at the game.

FROM TODAY'S ADVOCATE said:
Of the possibility of moving the SWAC to Shreveport or Jackson, all SWAC Commissioner Robert Vowels Jr. will confirm is the conference is going through a normal evaluation. A move from Birmingham is unlikely. The city, from public officials to businesses, has been extremely good to the conference. Though the basketball venue is appealing, Shreveport just won?t happen. Even Southern, with a campus in that city, doesn?t draw well for football games there. The only real challenger will be Jackson, mostly for its centralized location. But that city, where the baseball tournament is being played, has a lot of work to do to match what Birmingham has provided and can provide.

???????????????????????? Mr. Vowels is so stupid!

Jackson State could do it too. Our numbers are not where they used to be because we are not winning championships...and just started back winning...we broke records with Championship seasons. As the swagger comes back so will the fans. SU has their lowest attendance in years do to performance on the field...that's just how bandwagon fans are. Even with just about 12,000 for Paul Quinn, that was better than any other BCF team, aside from maybe Southern, would have done and we made more than we would have from most classics. I would not mind continuing to do this, especially if we can get Delta State to Jackson every year. We are also at the top of most promoters list. We would do fine in the strict 4+3 format.

Maybe when our stadium is complete we can get ULL to come to BR since our stadium will be bigger then Cajun Field.

How soon you all forget. Remember when we had the 7 game schedule and AAMU went to the SCG, because the GSU Game didn't count. Well a lot of folks wanted all games to count. Now if we get rid of the 9 game schedule then folks will be crying. Keep the 9 game schedule. We have a lot of folks who want to play Tuskegee and Morehouse on a home and home basis, so all this does is weaken the schedule.

Yeah, last year would have been your FIRST SCG under the 9-game mandate. However, it does not matter how they count going foward, JSU will be going to Bham. Hughes is gone.

JSU Fans will dump Comegy just as they did Bell after next season. You can start saving up your pennies for a buy out. Any coach that lose as 21 point lead to AJ will never be forgiven. It is the way you all were raised. You will not be happy until you get AJ.

AJ is not our concern. Comegy knows how to beat AJ. AJ should have won this championship and although he got there by the skin of his teeth, he had the most experienced team in the SWAC. JSU will hold that distinction next year!! What we did to AJ in the first half will continue through the entire game.

ULL is D-1 and no D-1 school is going to travel to a D-1AA school. No matter what size the stadium is.

Big D-1s don't do it for small D-1s.....if they travel to your city, they'll make you rent a larger venue...

UH did that to Texas once and has been ridiculed since
Rice has a 70,000 seat stadium but rents Reliant out
Miami made UH play in Reliant
Miamia made L. Tech play in Shreveport

part of the problems is the promoters though. as it has been explained to us before, by jafus I think (sorry if it wasn't u), the promoters suck up much of the profit for our classics. they front the money and assume the majority of the financial risk and are awarded accordingly. we've got to find a way to provide the financial backing for these games ourselves and reap a bigger reward for our product.

MD.... the way u solve teams trying to play a swac school not on the conference schedule is to not allow them to play anyone that's not apart of the conference schedule.

the nine game mandate hurts the conference. the quality of play and coaching has gone down since the inception of that rule. right now we step ooc to play junior colleges and catch beat downs. it may take a few years but we'll find our way back to being a good football conference, worthy of the crowds that come see us play, by playing superior competition.
