Within the past year, the multiyear contract extension the Saints announced for Sean Payton in September 2011 was voided by the NFL, making the suspended head coach a free agent after this season and casting questions on how long he will remain in New Orleans, according to league sources.

Payton is expected to become the NFL's most sought-after head coach after this season and there already is speculation in league circles that he could wind up returning to Dallas, where he worked as the assistant head coach from 2003 to 2005, during which time the Cowboys brought in quarterback Tony Romo, who attended the same college, Eastern Illinois, as Payton.

Saints Bounty Scandal

An NFL investigation found the New Orleans Saints operated a bounty system that rewarded 22 to 27 players for hard hits and for injuring opposing players. Profile »

Adam Schecter just talked about on ESPN. Might be interesting this off season.

Are they going to get rid of the redhead? lol I thought he was to be one of the best young coaches.

Garrett is hot, smoldering garbage. Dude can't even learn from his prior mistakes when he faces the exact same situation later.

HELL YEAH. I hope we tank the rest of the season to get a high draft pick and new coach.

I wouldnt be mad about this....put a good coach with our good GM and we will own Superbowls. Romo will become Seans best QB ever

He ain't going no where... the same reason his wife left New Orleans is the same reason he's gonna stay! Unless he does like Richard Pryor's character did and go see Miss Rudolph, that Louisiana Mojo ol girl put on him will keep him "rat chere" in Louisiana!

I know and Romo is hot Garbage for the most part too. I can't shake the thought of him being overrated and better suited for being a replacement player if the NFL goes on strike or a quality arena league player. I'm not a cowboy fan but that is what I think.

Sean Payton just told Jay Glazer he's not going anywhere and he's a Saint for life. He's not going to the Coach killer Jerry Jones.

He has already coached for Jerry. His mentor and teacher has coached for Jerry.

Report: Sean Payton's contract voided; could Cowboys court him?

Jason Garrett could be on the hot seat soon, and a superstar coach will now be available if the Cowboys want to make a change.

The multiyear contract extension the Saints announced for Sean Payton in September 2011 was voided by the NFL, making the suspended head coach a free agent after this season, ESPN reported, citing anonymous sources.

The Super Bowl-winning coach is friends with many Cowboys players and coaches. He also lives in the North Texas area. He went to the same school (Eastern Illinois) as quarterback Tony Romo.

Payton spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Cowboys under Bill Parcells. Before that, he was quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the New York Giants when Garrett was a backup quarterback for the team.

Earlier in October, Payton, who was suspended for the season for his alleged involvement in the Saints’ alleged bounty scandal, spoke at an SMU Athletic Forum luncheon. When asked if he would ever like to be the head coach of the Cowboys, Payton responded, “I’d rather answer a bounty question.”

Who doesn't know that he was OC for Parcells? We saw how that turned out.

Benson has given Payton space and control of the Saints, he has Mickey Loomis arguably the best GM in the game, he has Drew Brees. Enough said. Benson even has Payton working a side job with the Hornets during the suspension so Payton can make some money. The man is a Saint FOR LIFE.

JJ would give Payton full control just like Bill had full control. JJ knows in order to get a big name coach it will require him to give up some control. Payton knows the Saints are small time and their's nothing bigger than coaching America's Team. I bet that is his dream job.

Dude if you believe Bill had full control of the Cowboys then I have some swamp land to sell you. When was the last time "america's team" () won a title? Dude Sean Peyton is building a legacy with the Saints. Nobody wants to coach for Jerry Jones he wouldn't get out of the way for Jimmie Johnson so what makes you think he'll do it now? I live in Dallas and I can tell you the Cowboys are all style no substance and old news.

Hate to tell you but you're living in the past. The Cowboys haven't been America's team for quite sometime now. :emlaugh:

Do yall actually believe Jerry Jones would give control to anyone? Foolishness....Sean Payton will be on the Saints sideline next year taking no damn prisoners....dude is out for revenge.

This is the same crapola those cowgirl fans always come up with. Last year they tried to go after Drew Brees. Who would you rather coach, Drew Brees or some homo guy?
