Robert Kent Scouting Report

Offense Date: 9.27.03
College: Jackson State
Player: Robert Kent
Position: Quarterback #: 1
Height: 6042 Weight: 219 Speed: 4.67/40
Age as of 4/04: 23
Injuries/Legal Issues: Has never missed a game.
Grade: 1.81(6th round)

What does he do best? Kent has very good arm strength and throws a good ball. He has good ability outside of the pocket and steps up to avoid the rush rather than roll out.
What is his biggest negative? Kent forces throws and has trouble reading defenses. He locks on to receivers and has trouble with his progressions.
Evaluation of athletic potential: He has very good size, speed and strength numbers. Kent can make a play out of the pocket to go along with very good arm strength.
Does he make the big play? Kent has the arm strength to hit receivers 60+ yards in stride. He has several runs of 15+ yards as well.

Scouting Report: Kent shows an average drop back with long strides, and he stands too tall in the pocket. Kent was throwing off of his back foot, but is improving that part of his game. He is also beginning to step into his throws more and more making his arm appear even stronger. Kent has a quick release, but also tends to drop his arm in his delivery. This causes a few balls to be batted down at the LOS, but this isn't a major concern. Kent's biggest plus is his arm strength which is very good. He easily hits Wide Receivers in stride from 60+ yards away. He throws a perfect spiral allowing receivers to catch the ball. Kent has poor touch in his short passes, like most small school Quarterbacks. He completes 95+ of his passes fewer than 5 yards, but he doesn't always put the ball where he should on short throws. He doesn't allow his backs and tight ends the ability to run after they catch the ball. He shows good touch on intermediate to deep routes. He has the arm strength to make all the throws down field as well. Kent has good accuracy on passes over 15+, especially over the middle. Overall, his average is accurate, but is improving. Robert Kent is finally showing an improvement in his field vision and is keeping his head down the field when he is on the move. He has average ability to look off defenders, but still locks on and continuously misses the backside receivers. Kent plays with the same 40-speed (4.67), on the field, but he looks to pass first. He combines good size and strength in his run ability. Kent has open field moves that allow him to elude Backers, and has speed to out run Defensive Backs if he gets an angle. He does need to protect the ball better though. Kent is a good passer on the run as well. He squares his shoulders and uses his arm strength to get the ball to his receiver. Kent has somewhat of a quiet confidence for Jackson State. He is very productive in the second half and is able to win a lot of games for his team. He is an average team leader, but doesn't appear to be a player that will rally the team around him. Kent is however making better decisions with the ball and isn't throwing ill-advised passes into the secondary. Robert Kent has very good arm strength, and is improving his overall football smarts, but will need to develop as a pro-style NFL Quarterback.

General: With the new offense in Jackson State, Robert Kent is experiencing new formations that translate better into the NFL than their former Shotgun based offense. Toughness is a question on Kent; he has never taken a lot of hits. He has fumbled a few snaps under center in the 2003 season. Kent is a good student with a 3.5 GPA. He comes off as a coach-able player and is very productive. Was not highly recruited because he was more of a basketball player in High School.

Workout Results: Kent has been timed in the low 4.6's and does 12-15 reps of 225 pounds.

Games Viewed:
Alcorn State, 11/28/02
Tennessee State, 9/14/03

This is the only part I disagree with. I wonder how they chose what games to watch?

MH, looks like they are more impressed with Bell's offense than Asberry's.
so, is the goal to impress the NFL scouts or win games?

besides, wasnt it you who said that you're about more than Kent and Manning?

You miss the point everytime. Let me see, where your... Ok right here.........

The point is.....Bell's system has to be developed and is one to take us into the future and beyond what BAMA Jelly can match. We are about to embark on another 20 straight wins against you..and it ain't nothing you can do about it.

Where did you get this report? It's an interesting evaluation of Kent but it does seem to have some contradiction. If he is having problems reading defenses he will never make it in NFL. That is too bad since he seems to have everything else.

Mighty Hornet,
I don't see any contradictions. The part that questioned his toughness because he hasn't taken a lot of hits is inaccurate, not contradictory. The scout needs to look at tapes of the 02 USM and 01 A&M game to get a true picture of how tough Kent is. Also reading defenses is something that can be improved. Once he gets under an NFL system, that part of his game will improve.

Finally, the scout seems to complimentary of Bell's coaching moreso than the offense. The fact that he chose highlight his improved mechanics is evidence of this.

BTW, I made observations similar to the scouts in a the BB den thread. I could take offense that Mafia members put more stock in a scouts opinion than mine, but its all good. :D(J/K) Its a blessing for Kent that the scout watched the Tenn. State game. That was the best I've ever seen him play from a fundamentals standpoint.

This article was sent to me by JSU Huntsville, AL alumni president. I found the article to be inaccurate in reference to Kent taking tough hits. He really took a lot of hits in the AAMU game in 2001. The poor boy got blitzted so many times I felt like crying. I don't know how they choose the games they scout.

Not knocking Kent, because I have not seen this fault in him, but why is this a "small school Quarterback" problem? Is it just something that troubles the "small school"? Do "small schools" have have learning disabilities that the "big schools" don't have? If this is a problem, I would think it is the athlete, not the school. Otherwise the only way to solve the problem would be to transfer to a "big school".

Also, I would be interested in seeing a similar reports on Eugene and Richard, whom I consider, along with Kent, to be the best QB's in the conference.

Sometimes we need to see a scouting report from a third party to open our eyes and minds to access the true ability of these players.

I hate reading scouting reports on players, where the writers purposefully make a point to distinguish 'small college' from 'big time D1-A schools'..........

And the 'inference' is that the small school players are somewhat 'deficient' in certain aspects of the game, while the players at the D1-A schools all dayum-near have a Masters Degree in football knowledge......

But the interesting thing, is that whenever small school players get to match-up against big-time school players, the small school players always either hold their own, or flat-out outshine the other cats..... That's why I love the Senior Bowl and the Blue-Gray game........

Lewis Tillman, Tim Barnett, Jimmy Smith, Sylvester Morris..........and (hopefully) Kent.

It's called availability to be present at games. You have scouts that come to make their reports and you also have associates that unofficially pay visits to see progression before the visit is made. If the assocciate sees that there is no need for coming to the games, meaning that the kid that is of interest has dropped off. The scout will not come to see the kid play unless he is just in the area and available.

It's done everyday. Kent is still a good QB, the problem is whether someone wants to spend time trying to fix what no one at jsu has the ability to do. You would've thought that someone would have hired a true QB coach to help this man alone.

Truth is, Bell isn't an experienced QB coach, just as he isn't an experienced Head Coach. You can't make sugar out of......

No smack. I've heard Texans scout say that alot in the past two years.

At the skill positions there's not the big transition from "small schools" to the NFL, but at the qb position they're graded differently, because of the level of competition, and coaching.

That's not to say that "small school" quarterbacks don't produce in the NFL, because they do, but on an overall scale, they don't. Where as a running back, wide reciever, defensive back, the transition is usually an easier one.

NICE

I agree with you. We should have hired someone to develop this kid. In addition, JSU should have hired a good special team coach in the past. Over the past three years, the JSU adminisration has neglected our football program. We just recently hired a fulltime strength and conditioning coach. This Bell character is horrible. He has not improved turnovers or special teams. He also refused to hire a special team coach. Also, he did not hire an experienced offensive coordinator or offensive line coach. These kind of things happen when you hire a person to be your athletic director who had previously been an assistant ad at division II school with no football program. We have turned our athletic department over to a bunch of inexperienced individuals.

Pretty much what a few of the scouts told me. The only thing is that they really like Kent, but they can't tell whether he has reached his ceiling, because he's really not had anybody to teach him properly.

As for the folks yall hired. I wouldn't keep one soul of them after this season. That goes from the AD to the every football coach and assistant. I mean you've already hit this close to the bottom. It can't hurt to go get real folks to run your Athletic department and your football team. The basketball coach is a good hire, but he is on a time frame. Dude will be thinking about putting down the playbook in a few years and then yall gonna be looking for another coach.

2 things.

1. I don't know how you can knock Bell in this report. This scout made it a point to highlight the fact that Kent's mechanics are finally improving.
"He is also beginning to step into his throws more and more making his arm appear even stronger. Overall, his average is accurate, but is improving. Robert Kent is finally showing an improvement in his field vision and is keeping his head down the field when he is on the move. Overall, his average is accurate, but is improving. 2. The numbers don't allow us to bring in a coach with the specific responsibility of coaching Kent. We're allotted 6 fulltime slots along with 2(3?) restricted earnings positions. Of course Kent should've been worked with more, but we couldn't afford to bring in someone just for him.

Can't wait to see what is said about this kid tomorrow. I'll let ya know if some of the scouts are still looking.
