Southern Notebook: Port City crowd down again

SHREVEPORT -- Fewer and fewer fans have been coming to the Port City Classic.
Saturday's crowd was announced at 11,947. That continues a decline in the three years of the series.

For the Mississippi Valley-Southern game in 2001, 25,631 attended. And for the Northwestern State-Southern game in 2002, 23,572 attended.

Though Southern boasts a campus in Shreveport, Saturday was the first time Southern served as the home team in the classic.

Southern Athletic Director Floyd Kerr said the school has no plans to play in Shreveport next season, when Southern will have only four home games.

Before the game, Kerr said he'd be happy with around 15,000. But even a walk-up crowd surge, still deep outside the gates deep into the second quarter, didn't help. Prairie View, as expected, brought few fans.

A crowd of only 12,350 came to see Southern beat Mississippi Valley State in Jackson, Miss., in the season opener.

Not surprise at all. I personally hate playing in Shreveport and so does other fans and hope the two people whom was responsbile for moving this game get the message. Might have been better if they played around 2 pm so our fans can get the he77 out of that city. This game was supposed to be played in Baton Rouge. This is the third year str8 that our first home game wasn't til the end of Sept. Guess I'll have to attend the next board meeting to make that point clear. I refuse to go to a game their and apparently so does many others. To the posters that have been posting our game attendance for games on the road, we appreaicate the attention, because we have set the standard. :D

I totally agree. We could have had 25,000 plus in Baton Rouge instead of comming way up to Sherveport. What gets me is most of the crowd is the same old Southern faithfull. Shereport does not support the game. If it's someone elses home game OK, but not one of ours.

What's the problem with Shreveport?? Serious question. :confused: I thought that was an undercount when I first saw the attendance. I figured this game would draw better than this. A&M and GSU have a game there this week. Should we expect the same turnout?

Notice I said me personally. I think it should have been a day game so most fans could have gotten out of their afterward. I'll leave at that. My real reason would start a whole new discussion and I'm not up to it.
 
Richardson tries to be "the company man" and not complain, but he doesn't like playing this game in Shreveport either. However, he's smart enuff not to ruffle the Board's feathers...he just let's the fans make a statement for him. This attendance makes a clear statement (1) The local (BR/New Orleans area) fans don't want to travel to Shreveport (2) Shreveport is the home of SU Alums but most fans in that area are pro-Grambling.

Supposedly this year it was scheduled as such due to the 4 lane construction on Harding not being finished. That's what they said. :rolleyes: It still won't be finished by Sept. 27. :smh:

Don't you think the Vegas game had something to do with attending the game in Shreveport? If I had to choose which game to take off for, I would rather go to Vegas. Looking at my entertainment dollars.:D

You are exactly right. Plus what BG said as well. It was a combination of things. But I will be in Vegas this weekend spending my entertainment dollar as well.:D

Well, IMHO, the following killed this game:

1. Vegas next week.
2. Shreveport night game. I got back to BR at around 3:00 am.
3. No SUBR fans in Shreveport. You have a few, but the SUSBO people didn't come.
4. Opponent
 
The opponent has everything to do with attendance. SU fans just are not going to travel very far to se PV. Who would?

and gram fans may out number SU fans ( not alums), but I wouldn't exactly call Caddo Parish a LOCK for gram. :vomit: :D
 
well this is a promise that you heard here first...i am welling to bet that PV and another SWAC or any other school can play in a real classic in shreveport and draw more than 10,000 in a 70K seat stadium. i have PV in already and the other school we know won't be GSU, JSU, TSU, or SU. so when i get the date and school for next year don't be upset. don't get it twisted this was a SUcks home game. when we host it we always get 17K-20K so place your wager and sign right here X___________________ :idea:

....excuse me....No SUBR fans, besides the Nash's....:D

But Seeing Spots, the reason I got into that discussion at the house was about this same topic. The SUSBO people didn't show up at all. But to hear them tell it we came there as a recruiting tool for the academic side of the system. Wouldn't it be better to bus the folks down to BR for a home game? Al the folks there, at the game, were your regular SU travelers, minus the ones that had to make a monetary decision between Shreveport and Las Vegas.
