Bloom was my boy on the weekends with Soledad O'Brien. I also thought he had the best Embedded coverage of any of the correspondants. Dayum you Bush! See what you did?

NBC's David Bloom Dies Covering Iraq War
NEW YORK (AP) - NBC News correspondent David Bloom, one of the most recognizable reporters covering the war from the Iraqi desert, collapsed Sunday and died from a blood clot, the network said.
The 39-year-old co-anchor of the weekend "Today" show was traveling with troops about 25 miles south of Baghdad when he suddenly collapsed, said Allison Gollust, a spokeswoman for NBC News.

He was airlifted to a nearby field medical unit, where he was pronounced dead from a pulmonary embolism, Gollust said. She said his death was not combat related.

Bloom, a native of Edina, Minn., lived in the New York area with his wife, Melanie, and three daughters. He had been on assignment in Iraq for several weeks, reporting from the middle of desert sand storms and while columns of military vehicles rumbled toward Baghdad.

"You couldn't keep him away from a story," Tim Russert, the network's Washington bureau chief, said Sunday. "Whenever something was breaking, he wanted to be there."

Bloom had been the co-anchor of the weekend "Today" show since March 2000. On Sunday, his co-anchor Soledad O'Brien described him as "a dedicated, tenacious and talented reporter."

"He died doing what he loved, and doing what he did best," she said.

Before joining the "Today" show desk, Bloom was a White House correspondent for NBC. In his decade with the network, he reported on major stories including president races, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Washington-area sniper shootings, the O.J. Simpson trial and the war in Bosnia.

Bloom attended Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., and started his career as an investigative reporter for NBC-owned WTVJ in Miami in 1989. He joined NBC News in Chicago in 1993 and then reported from Los Angeles starting in 1995.

"In times like these, a journalist's contribution to his country is measured in terms of illustrious commitment and sacrifice," NBC Chairman and CEO Bob Wright said in a statement announcing Bloom's death Sunday.

"There was no one more devoted to his calling than David Bloom and for that we are both grateful and humbled," he said.

Yeah he was my favorite weekend anchor! Just as the weekday family; Him, Janice and Soledad had such chemistry!

I liked David Bloom as well but am I missing something when someone blamed the war for his death. From my understanding he died of natural causes. Were there any other reports stating that Bloom's environment contributed to his death?

From my understand, Gramalum, the blame comes in if there were not any war to begin with, David wouldn't have been over there having to be in such a cramped up and tight area. :(

What are yall talking about.........saying you knew this would happen, and blaming Bush and the war?

Did any of you actually read what he died of? He wasn't shot or blown up........he would have died even if he was at home.

Reading is Fundamental......

Well...er...Fortitude, I wasn't referring to your thread.

But I had that same feeling as well. Couldn't explain it.

Pulmonary Embolism

What Happens

Pulmonary embolism can affect people in different ways. Symptoms, when they occur, often come on suddenly. Sharp chest pain and shortness of breath may occur when a blood clot (or other material) becomes lodged in one of the pulmonary arteries. If the embolus is large, it can cause sudden death. In contrast, a smaller pulmonary embolism may not cause any major problems and may even go unnoticed. Pulmonary embolism is likely to recur without treatment.

Shortness of breath and rapid heart rate and breathing are caused by significantly reduced blood flow to one or both lungs. Chest pain may result from low blood oxygen levels, which can damage tissue on the surface of the lung.

Pulmonary Embolism

Cause

Pulmonary embolism is a blood clot, air, fat, or other material that travels through the bloodstream and becomes lodged in one of the arteries that deliver blood to the lungs. Blood clots cause most episodes of pulmonary embolism.

Blood clots generally develop in thedeep veins of the legs. Over 95% of blood clots that cause pulmonary embolism are formed in the upper (proximal) leg veins.4 Clots can also form in the lower (distal) deep veins of the leg, as well as the deep veins of the arms or pelvis. Occasionlly, blood clots develop in surface veins (superficial); these clots very rarely lead to pulmonary embolism.

When a blood clot first forms, it is very small and can only be seen using a microscope. It is not yet understand why clots become larger in some people. Researchers have found that sometimes the tendency to form larger clots is an inherited trait; other times the tendency seems to be related to other factors, such as surgery or trauma to a vein or slowed blood flow.

Well if you didn't say anything in your post then that would mean that subsequent post were not directed towards you.

Now put that in bold........

The man died from a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot that broke a part and went thru his heart).

This is caused by lack of blood circulation. This is why people are told to move around when they have overseas flights...as sitting or laying in a cramped position for extensive amounts of time can cause the blood clot formation...

It is true it could have happened anywhere, but he had complained of cramped sleeping quarters (INSIDE a BRADLEY FIGHTING vehicle aint exactly comfortable)...

So in part, it is due to him covering the war and having cramped sleeping quarters without enough movement.

God rest his soul.

May God bless his wife and daughters and keep them during this time and always.

I loved watching him on Today's weekend show. I will miss him.

I find that hard to believe.....maybe it could happen that way...but I'm not sure.

I am only rehashing what I heard the Heart Specialist say on tv this morning with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer as well as them showing DAVID BLOOM say he had cramped sleeping quarters and showing him rub his legs to promote circulation while sitting on top of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Take it for what it is worth.
