SU second baseman tops team

Written for the LSWA

Southern second baseman Rickie Weeks' latest honor is Louisiana Player of the Year.

NEW ORLEANS -- Southern University sophomore Rickie Weeks, a first-team All-America second baseman who hit .495 with 20 home runs and 12 triples, was named the Louisiana Player of the Year Saturday by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Weeks topped the 15-man All-Louisiana first team. He led the nation in batting average, RBIs and triples per game.

First-year LSU coach Smoke Laval and Southern's Roger Cador tied as the Coach of the Year. And Tigers pitcher Jake Tompkins was named Newcomer of the Year, with New Orleans designated hitter Chris Adams and LSU second baseman J.C. Holt sharing the Freshman of the Year Award.

Laval led LSU into the NCAA Super Regional, while Cador's team led the nation in scoring and batting average while making the Jaguars' fifth trip to an NCAA Regional.

Tompkins, a right-handed pitcher, was the Tigers' top reliever after moving over from the starting rotation. Holt hit better than .340 while starting at second base as a freshman, and Adams led UNO in hitting with a .359 average and scored 29 runs while picking up 52 hits.

Tulane and LSU placed four players each on the first team, while Northwestern State had three. Southern, UL-Lafayette, McNeese State and UL-Monroe had one first-teamer each.

The voting included a tie for first-team catcher between Northwestern's Anatole Vincent and McNeese's Ran Prince. Outfielder Brad Hanson and pitcher O.J. King completed Northwestern's first-team choices.

The Green Wave contingent consisted of first baseman James Jurries, pitcher Nick Bourgeois, outfielder Jon Kaplan and utility player Michael Aubrey.

LSU placed ace pitcher Lane Mestepey, third baseman Wally Pontiff, shortstop Aaron Hill and outfielder Sean Barker on the top unit.

Weeks, designated hitter Jason Lind of UL-Monroe and pitcher Justin Gabriel of UL-Lafayette rounded out the first team.

Players from nine different schools formed the second team.

LSU placed pitchers Bo Pettit and Tompkins and second baseman Holt on the second team, while UL-Lafayette had pitcher Andy Gros and utility man Corey Coles.

Southern was represented by third baseman Antoin Gray, a third-team All-American like Mestepey, and outfielder Fred Lewis, the 66th pick in the draft earlier this month.

UNO designated hitter Chris Adams, Grambling first baseman Alberto Campbell and Nicholls State shortstop Chuck Hickman were their team's lone selections to the All-Louisiana squads.

In addition to Lewis, the second-team outfield included Jerad Doty of UL-Monroe and Tulane's Aaron Feldman. Northwestern pitcher Casey Johnson completed the second team.

Trae Duncan signs deal with Devil Rays

Advocate staff report
Southern University sophomore second baseman Rickie Weeks has garnered his second All-American award this season.
USA Today's Baseball Weekly named Weeks its first-team All-American second baseman.

Weeks was previously named as a first-team selection on the Louisville Slugger All-American team (with Southern third baseman Antoin Gray and LSU pitcher Lane Mestepey on the third team).

Said Baseball Weekly's Dana Heiss Grodin of Weeks, "Scouts love his instincts at the plate -- he's struck out only 18 times in 190 at-bats (as of mid-May). He's projected by some to be the top pick in the 2003 draft."

Weeks, named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's top player and hitter in both the regular season and tournament, led the nation in batting average (.495), RBIs per game (1.78 or 96 total) and triples per game (0.22 or 12 total). He put up those numbers while moving in from center field to replace Michael Woods, an All-American and the 32nd pick in the draft last season, at second base.

Weeks' career batting average of .460 has him on pace to tie the NCAA record of .460 set by Keith Hagman of New Mexico in two seasons (1979-80).

Weeks was a freshman All-American by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, which selects the Louisville Sluger All-American team, last season.

Baseball America will announce its All-American teams June 19.

Also on June 19, Weeks, along with LSU's Aaron Hill and Tulane's Michael Aubrey, will be one of 34 trying out for the USA Baseball team in Tucson, Ariz. Weeks and Hill made the team last season.

Weeks was named Thursday to the All-South Central Region first team by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

DUNCAN SIGNS WITH DEVIL RAYS: Southern third baseman/designated hitter Trae Duncan on Thursday signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization, according to a university news release.

Duncan, who prepped at Broadmoor High and spent the 2001 season at LSU, hit .340 with 40 RBIs, nine home runs and 12 doubles last season.

Great job Weeks and Cador. I'm especially glad to see Coach Cador get La coach of the year.

It says a lot for Cador to get such an award in a state where every baseball program usually takes a backseat to LSU.

Rickie and Coach Cador have accomplished a lot. I'm so glad that they are getting the respect that they deserve. :)
