Damn ! Damn ! Damn !

Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who helped shift the U.S. Supreme Court toward a more conservative ideology and strongly supported states' rights during his three decades on the bench, has died. Rehnquist was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in October 2004, not long after the 2004-2005 court session began, and received outpatient radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

Lord help us, now!!! Bush gonna stack that Court so deep with conservatives, they'll be ruling that Blacks don't belong here and should be shipped out on straw boats.

Reproductive rights, civil rights, human rights...will all be things of the past. :bawling:

It is praying time y'all. :shame:

I'm prayting with you! There is no telling what our country will look like once the new court is selected. :(

I don't see the big fuss with this one. This might be a good thing. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying its good he died, but the Court is already packed with conservatives. And you can't get much more conservative than Rhenquist. It'll be impossible for his replacement to do any more harm than he did. Its not like we lost one of the 4 liberal justices.

I think with 2 vacancies, it'll be a harder for Bush to push through 2 hardline conservatives. He'll probably get Roberts thru easily, but he'll have a fight with the next one unless he appoints someone more moderate. If he was smart, he'd appoint Alberto Gonzales.

LOL! I'm with you! But in all seriousness, Lord help us cause that fool Bush will definitely put a bunch of right-wing-Christian zealots on the bench who will set us back 3,000 years on issues of race, womanhood, affirmative action. We might as well get ready to go back to slavery days.

Bush is probably going to resubmit Roberts as Chief Justice. Doing this would mean that he's in effect replacing Rhenquist, leaving O'Connor on the bench this term until he nominates someone else next year. So basically the dynamics of the Court will stay the same for now.

Bush just changed his nomination of John Roberts from that of Associate Justice to Chief Justice.

Bush nominates Roberts as chief justice

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush on Monday nominated Judge John Roberts to succeed the late William H. Rehnquist as chief justice of the United States.

"It is fitting that a great chief justice be followed in office by a person who shared his deep reverence for the Constitution, his profound respect for the Supreme Court and his complete devotion to the cause of justice," Bush said from the White House, with the judge by his side.

"I am honored and humbled by the confidence that the president had shown in me," Roberts said. (Watch nomination and acceptance -- 3:57)

"And I'm very much aware that, if I am confirmed, I would succeed a man that I deeply respect and admire, a man who has been very kind to me for 25 years."

Roberts accepted the offer in a meeting with Bush on Monday morning, a senior administration official said.
