PHILADELPHIA -- Beanie Sigel won't be headed back to prison anytime in the near future. A jury in Sigel's native Philadelphia acquitted him Monday on charges he nearly shot a man to death two years ago.

The rapper has been cleared of attempted murder in the shooting of Terrance Speller. Police said Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, fired multiple shots at the man during a dispute outside a strip club in July 2 003.

A jury deadlocked on the charges in April 2004 and prosecutors decided to give it another go-round.

A conviction would have meant Sigel would have go back to prison. He was released just a few weeks ago after serving a federal prison term on an unrelated weapons charge.

Sigel still has one more legal morsel on his plate. He is accused of breaking a man's eye socket during an argument in January 2003.

But unlike the case in which he was acquitted Monday and the case in which he was recently released from prison, this is a city matter, not a federal case.

Sigel has released three projects in all -- each of which got within five spots of No. 1.

Sigel has a criminal rap sheet that dates back to his days as a youngster growing up on the streets of south Philadelphia.
