Do let your students or children watch T.V. I took my son to an interview yesterday at this montessori school and the lady that did the interview harped on not letting her kids or parents letting their kids watch T.V. at all up until the age of 6. She mentioned how studies have been done that show that T.V. affects the frontal lobbes of the brain, etc. i understand that the early years are the most influential years of their learning. I let my son watch maybe two hours of T.V. a day and it's only educational things that are shown on The Sprout Channel. One hour in the morning and One hour in the evening. I know too much T.V. can't be good for anyone.

Teachers/Parents how do you feel about the affects of watching T.V.?

I let mine watch TV at home. More than anything, we play music almost around the clock at home and in the car, because Seth LOVES to sing.

But I do prefer that TV time is limited at school.

My children are now 21 and 19, but when they were pre-schoolers, their TV time was pretty limited to Sesame Street (which I never watched as a child). The rest of their times during the day were interactive with us and a very small group of their own friends.

I do let mine watch TV but I am trying to break the habit. Sometimes they are almost hypnotized by shows they are watching and don't hear a word I say. So in the evenings, when we come home, I will turn on the jazz station or play classical why they do their homework. After that's over, then they can watch an hour or so of TV. But truthfully, they do overload on TV on the weekends. I just don't want them always coming home and plopping down in front of the TV for a show or video game. Outside time is required! I have little kids....5 and 7.

My son can watch tv whenever he wants, as long as his homework is done first. After that, he can watch until he goes to bed, if he likes. I've been a tv junkie all my life and I turned out just fine.

I watched T.V. a lot as a kid also and turned out ok. I think it's more things on T.V. now that can influence your kids these days.

Why block tv when you give them video games and toys to play with all day long. :uhoh:

Mine do have video games but they were bought by their uncle (who is a video game junkie) I do not let them play a lot mainly because..frankly, I don't get it..I don't get sitting in front of a video game for hours on end. The only video game I owned was an Atari with PacMan and Defender as the only two games I had. But I grew up COUNTRY, you took your arse outside and played until the street lights came on. Played baseball with a stick and rode our bikes playing dayum Dukes of Hazard! So I never watched much TV and when I did, I watched what everyone else watched. No TV in each persons room...we watched together.

That's why I stated it's mainly all about monitoring what they watch...you don't have to take tv away from kids totally. They'll be out of touch w/the world...this is MY OPINION, though.

Same here! I don't understand how GROWN/A men still sit at home all day and play playstation and other games all day. Maybe I'm getting older and I see things differently now. I have a few friends that are married that will play their games all day. I guess I've outgrown playing games.

Some of these studies are full of ****. One day they tell you something is good and a few years later that same thing is bad.

I'm going to raise my son the way I see fit.

Co-sign with kellis.

At the moment, my kids are hooked on those ER shows on TLC and things like that. We were talking about a show on rogue waves, and my son sat there and explained what caused them. I missed that part because I went to sleep.

They will watch a LOT LESS tv once school starts, because they can't do anything (tv, outside, whatever) until their schoolwork is done.

Really, I think it has more to do with what kind of kid you are dealing with. Structure is needed but understanding what makes your child tick is the key too. My son has never had a limitation on what he watches on television or how long he watches TV. He is 16 now and mainly watches cartoons and listens to rap music. I CAN?T STAND IT! But he is 5th in his class (3.67 average), starting center on the football team and girl running behind him so that when we are in public it like I am with a rock star. I leave him alone. Only thing I tell him now as long as you are handling your business I will stay out your business. But that works for him, some kids need a lot of guidance. I always say some kids are going to do well no matter what and some kids are not going to do well no matter what.

My opinion is that Montesorri system of learning is not good for BLACK BOYS. Not just my opinion, there is research that supports this that I could show that chick.

On the issue about TV, my son watches a lot, but limited during school. I also limit the video games and computer and his cell phone all that until his schoolwork is done. I also use the withdrawal of ALL SCREENS as punishment when he violates the rules or grades slip.

Plus, he is an "outside" kid, playing, riding bikes, swimming all day with his boys in the neighborhood. He isn't a slave to the TV.

France bans broadcast of TV shows for babies

Council says it wants to protect kids 3 and under from developmental risks

PARIS - France's broadcast authority has banned French channels from airing TV shows aimed at children under 3 years old, to shield them from developmental risks it says television viewing poses at that age.

The High Audiovisual Council, in a ruling published Wednesday, said it wanted to "protect children under 3 from the effects of television."

France's minister for culture and communication, Christine Albanel, issued a "cry of alarm" to parents in June about channels dedicated 24 hours a day to baby-targeted programming. In a newspaper interview, she called them "a danger" and urged parents not to use them to help their children get to sleep.

Rest story

You are correct. There are a lot of studies about the Montessori Method with black males and the negative effects. Both of my parents were guidance counselors in the school system. We would talk about stuff like this over dinner. I am not going to racially profile every black male. Everybody has their opinion on how to raise their own children, only thing I am saying there is no one way, you can not use a cookie cutter. What works for some may not work for others. Some kids need more structure when they show adverse behavior. However, I have a relative whose father spent more time of his live in jail and mother on drugs but still was able graduated from your Southern Law School. You have to know what your child is made of then choose the appropriate methods.

I "talked" to buckwheat in the pms and basically told him the same thing. YOU make the choice for your child, irrespective of what other children are doing or schools they are attending. This applies to children in the same family too. Each child has to be afforded what is in THEIR best interest. I have friends with children in different schools because it is not a cookie cutter situation. Montesorri works for some, doesn't for others. Most Montessori Schools have little or no structure and for boys of any color that is not a good thing. Some boys thrive, some struggle. You have to know what is best for that child.

Who is your relative that is a SULC grad? You can pm me if you don't want to say out here.

Well, I know Seth probably wouldn't be able to hang in montessori. That child needs structure, or he'll be the one teaching the teacher.

One of mine needs military school already...and he's 5!:lmao:

The youngest is always the firecracker! :lmao:
That's the main reason why I'm scared to have another child. I got a STRONG feeling the baby will be a girl and act just like I did.
