I think this news says a lot about just how much HBCU sports have evolved. Its not uncommon to see HBCUs (especially at the NAIA level) join predominant white conferences, but it does say something when opposite happens.

HAMPTON, VA – After playing one season as a football-only member of the country’s oldest historically black athletic league, Chowan University and ten of its athletic programs enter the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association as a full member today. The announcement signifies a new era in college athletics as Chowan is the first-ever non-HBCU to play as a member of the CIAA.

“Chowan University’s history contains many firsts,â€￾ stated Dennis Helsel, Director of Athletics at Chowan. “This is another example that was created by visionary conference and University leaders.â€￾

I was under the impression that Chowan has been a member of the CIAA for a year or two already?
