PVAMU Quiz Bowl Team Captures University's First Championship
A ten-student team from PVAMU emerged as National Champions of 2010 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge. The undefeated team claimed victory after defeating Mississippi Valley State University (265-195) in the final competition.
The team gained the University’s first ever championship title in the annual academic competition among the best and brightest students who attend the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Along with bragging rights, the team was awarded a $50,000 prize.
“This is a significant achievement for the entire PVAMU community, especially for our students who competed today,†said PVAMU President Dr. George C. Wright. “To prepare for such a rigorous and challenging competition takes time and dedication. I am truly proud of our students for their sacrifice.â€
PVAMU has competed in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge for the last 20 years, reaching its highest ranking (final four) in 1990.
Each year more than 250 HBCU college students travel to Orlando, Florida to participate in the two-day competition, which showcases their knowledge in the areas of world history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social science and popular culture.
Throughout the competition period, the initial field of 64 teams is pared down to 16 teams, which then participate in a single-elimination playoff round until only the final four teams remain.
This year, Prairie View A&M eliminated Fayetteville State University, Clark Atlanta University and Fisk University before their championship match with Mississippi Valley.
Participants include Team Captain, Cedrick Wilson, Senior, Biology; Cedra Wilson, Sophomore, Marketing; Gabrielle Washington, Junior, Agriculture; Edward Hackett, Senior, Civil Engineering; Jonathon Gholston, Junior Communication; Leah Mitchell, Senior, Chemistry; Avirsha Propps, Freshman, Architecture; Isaac Hoyt, Junior, Chemical Engineering; Sada Coleman, Senior, Political Science and Soceri Jones, Senior, Education. Herb Thomas serves as coach and advisor.
