PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Grambling State was stunned Saturday as Prairie View A&M swept a doubleheader over the Tigers to split a four-game Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division series at the W.M. Nicks Complex.
Prairie View won the opener 10-9 and game two 9-7.
GSU now stands at 18-19 overall and 11-13 in the SWAC West while Prairie View A&M is 3-41 and 3-24.
Alberto Campbell and Joshua Scott each homered for GSU in the opener, but Prairie View outhit the Tigers 12-8 to pull off only the second win of the season for the Panthers.
Grambling used four pitchers in the contest with Channing Cornelius picking up the loss for the Tigers. Heriod Holley III started on the mound for GSU while Derrick Stevens and Willie Harrison also saw action out of the bullpen.
Gerald Bartholomew led the Tigers with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate with four RBIs while Ryan Haskell knocked in two runs for GSU.
Both teams started hot in game two as the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 start before Prairie View countered with seven runs in the bottom of the second off of starter Michael Darrington, who picked up the loss.
The Panthers led 9-6 heading into the seventh and final inning, but Grambling threatened to make a last-ditch comeback as Carl Johnson tripled and scored on a Reggie Jackson single.
That's as much as the Tigers could muster as Prairie View picked up the final three outs to lock down its second win of the day and third of the year.
Alberto Campbell and Jacobi Frank each homered for GSU while Campbell and Jackson each went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Tigers.
Grambling will try to regroup on Tuesday as the Tigers play host to Jackson State in a noon contest at the Ruston High School Baseball Field.
