Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.

1 Chronicles 4:10

It's interesting that you posted the prayer of Jabez. There has been much discussion about his prayer with a group of friends during the last couple of weeks. I have a question about the placement of verses 9-10 which tells us so much, even about his name. Do you have any insight of why it appears between the geneology listings? Thanks.

LMBH.................,

My pastor told me of a real good book out now thats called the "Prayer of Jabez." I haven't checked it out yet (I will probably get it tommorrow), but last night I decided to look at those scriptures in Chronicles. As I read the scriptures, I focused in on Jabez's heart. Apparently his mother had trouble with his birth. That fact that his mother was in pain because of him probably touched his heart deeply and he became a person that didn't want to hurt others. He seemed to be humble. So he prayed to God that he wouldn't be a burden and that he and the people and things around him that he loved could be blessed. And God really hears the prayers of one that has righteous and humble heart..........., Now I really got to check out this book because I know it would give me more insight and I will post more thoughts and comments...,

I will definitely be looking forward to your thoughts on the book. It is a prayer that we should all pray and take a selah on!

Thanks, Bulldog.M.ED.23

I understand the two verses, and would like to learn more. However, I found it interesting how verses 1-8 are genealogy, and 9-10 referencing how Jabez got his name, then his awesome prayer. And in verse 11 the geneology continues. One thing that comes to my mind is what I would have missed if I had skipped over the genealogy.

LMBH,

The mention of this historical information probably indicates that God has granted Jabez's request. His good accomplishments contradicts his name, "Son of Sorrow".

Sometime we forget that the Bible is a history lesson too.

I just finished reading The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson and it has indeed blessed me.....,

The book shows how one can have a blessed life by praying the way Jabez prayed. His prayer is uncommon.

First, Jabez began his prayer by asking to be blessed. Sometimes we may not ask for God's blessings because we may consider it to be selfish. But God really does want to bless us if our heart is right. Its in his nature. In James 4:2, it says you do not have because you do not ask. In Matt. 7:7 it says ask and you shall recieve. He seemed to want the blessings God had for him. An illustration was given about one who came to Heaven and saw a lot of wrapped gifts. Those were the gifts God wanted to give to him but he didn't ask.

Second, Jabez asked him to enlarge his territory. He expected God to do more for him than the norm since God is not a normal God. Your territory is the things/business that God has entrusted you with. When God is enlarging your territory, he is expanding it for his glory. He is giving you the opportunity to touch other people's lives through his name. Maybe you are a Doctor or Lawyer. If he enlarges your territory, his making an opportunity for you to bless and encourage others you come in contact with just as long as you are handling your business his way.

Third, "Oh that your hand would be upon me" talks about the Lord's Guidance. An illustration was given about a boy asking his father to help him go up to a giant slide and come down. The boy couldn't do it without his father. So his father got up behind him, and they slid down together. The experience was awsome. Things we do just ain't right without our fathers touch/guidance.

Finally, when Jabez prayed about keeping from evil, its just like asking the Lord to help you to stay out of trouble. This is such a smart strategy. Many times when we face temptation head on, many of us just can't deal with it. Sometimes we do and it wears us out. Just simply not fighting and fleeing temptation is a smart strategy.

So why was there detail given to Jabez, the book implies that Jabez simply asked. "God favors those who ask. He holds nothing from those who wants and earnestly long for what he wants. As Yolanda Adams sang, only believe....,

There is so much else to share but I will stop.., I hope this blesses someone like it has me..., Also check out their website at http://www.prayerofjabez.com

I like this as the Prayer of Jabez suddenly fell into my spirit last Friday as a passing thought.
