LITTLE ROCK - Because of the political clout of Southern University, Southwestern Athletic Conference football teams will play a contrived conference schedule this fall.

Normally, the 10 schools each play nine conference games. This year and this year only, each has seven conference games. The setup is so convoluted that Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Southern - both members of the Western Division - will play four games against Eastern Division opponents, but only three games against teams from their own division and will not play each other.

Imagine the hoots and howls if Arkansas did not play LSU, but competed against the Tigers for the Western Division title of the Southeastern Conference.

The genesis of this joke is the Gateway Classic in St. Louis, a late September game that UAPB has participated in for the past several years.

Late last year, Earl Wilson, president of the Gateway Classic Foundation, contacted UAPB Athletic Director Craig Curry about playing a SWAC team in St. Louis. Previously, UAPB's opponents have included Kentucky State and Howard University.

Curry suggested Southern, Jackson State and Alabama A&M and the foundation followed up with letters that included the date of the game, guarantees and other details. Interested, Southern responded. UAPB gets $150,000 for the game and pockets something in six figures after expenses, but as the premier school in the SWAC, Southern asked for $200,000.

The foundation said no and while Southern pondered the standard payout, Gateway contacted Alabama A&M. With a huge alumni base in St. Louis, Alabama A&M jumped at the chance. ...

This article is misleading and pretty much false in some cases. I hope this guy isn't your beat writer b/c he has no clue as to what he's talking about.

So what's new? Politics have ALWAYS been at work in the SWAC. And Southern have ALWAYS had political clout. We flexed our muscles publicly and got what we wanted. DEAL WITH IT!

Normally, the 10 schools each play nine conference games.

Wasn't this supposed to be the first year for the 9-game mandate? Guess somebody in Arkansas is still :redhot:

I hope that the UAPB/AAMU will be such a great matchup for the Gateway that it will be something that can continue each year.

What is the largest crowd for the Gateway? I think we might break that attendance this year. AAMU is on the move and I think this game is going to become a regular classic after this year.

The first year UAPB played Central State Ohio; it was around 53,000.

we have not been playing nine conference games. that is one wrong statement. Plus, this year they are still sticking with the 7-game format.

It doesn't matter. The SWAC was to play nine conference opponents, 7 games counting. It was clear how the 7 games were to be determined, but even that is not the case. It wouldn't surprise me if a game is or is not determined to be a conference game during half-time.

Any team not having the 7 games counted as conference games as determined by the rules should not be considered to compete for a championship. That would include UAPB, SU, TxSU, JSU, and Alcorn.

...or care at all? Another pair of Arkansas panties in a bunch. Everybody up there so damn pissy - like the smell.

Let it go. Let God. Or in the SWAC, Southern.

Who's to blame Southern or The SWAC leadership for not forcing us to play?

Southern can only do what the SWAC allows us to do.

Don't cry to Southern, cry to the SWAC office.

SOUTHERN - "THE PIMPS OF THE SWAC" :lecture:
