1SGT Robinson,
I recently invested in a Canon 30D with the 28 - 135 IS USM lens, but I can't seem to get wide angle shots without backing far away from the subject. Resulting in my subjects looking like ants. Please give me suggestions of lenses to use. I want wide angle close ups.

You need to get a wide angle (Fish Eye) lens...

This is a good ultrawide zoom lens for the EOS line of cameras. It's kinda expensive though.

Not to sound ignorant... but... Who plays in these all star bands? Are they high school, college, alumni, or what?

The 10-22mm is a little too wide, try the:

Canon 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM $515
http://www.adorama.com/Search-Results.tpl?page=searchresults&searchinfo=canon%2017-85mm
This is Canon's best basic midrange digital zoom.
It's got great IS for sharp shots without a tripod.
It's super sharp, has great Image Stabilization, focuses almost instantly and is easy to use and carry. It's a great lens!
As an EF-S series lens it only works on the recent small sensor (1.6x or APS-C) cameras, like the Rebels (Rebel, XT and XTi [300D, 350D and 400D]), 20D and 30D. It won't even fit on the older D30, D60 and 10D.

or the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 $449
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/423714-REG/Tamron_AF016C700_17_50mm_f_2_8_XR_Di.html

Happy shooting.

That's the lens I got now.. I purchased it with the camera. My co-worker is a professional photographer and told me to spend the money now, so I did... :D

But if you want a wide shots up close and far away, you have to get a wide angle lens.
