Assaulted toddler dies

A League City toddler who police say was beaten and sexually assaulted died today when doctors removed her from life support.
Police on Friday charged the 2-year-old girl's father, Frank Javier Padilla, 44, with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of injury to a child. He is being held in the Galveston County Jail in lieu of $1.5 million bail.
Police said charges of capital murder would probably be filed after the child died.
"Investigators are continuing to collect facts and evidence," said League City Police Capt. Pat Bittner. "The autopsy results are a key portion of the investigation and the results must be in hand before the district attorney makes a decision to upgrade the charge to capital murder."
When the child was taken to Christus St. John Hospital in Nassau Bay on Friday evening, she was unconscious and not breathing. Her father said she had fallen off a sink.
Padilla later confessed to injuring his daughter for among other reasons wetting her pants. In addition to injuries consistent with a sexual assault, the girl also suffered a fractured skull, pelvis, ribs and leg as well as black eyes and bruises all over her body.
Doctors at Memorial Hermann Hospital, where the girl was transported, determined the child was brain-dead but kept her on life support. They had hoped to gain permission from the child's mother to harvest some organs for transplant, but the mother declined.
After the girl died today, the mother became distraught was being treated at the hospital.
