Oprah car winners hit with hefty tax

I see. The car is considered Income. so the INCOME taxes....is killing them...

So get a loan and pay the $7000.

If they can't afford a car they dang sho ain't goin be able to get a bank loan...

UH ................ I THOUGHT THEY SAID EVERYTHING WAS FREE.....................At least that's the way it's been played in the media.

How in the heck can people, (so bad off they were picked to get a car), PAY $7000 in taxes. :what:

Bet you won't see her sitting on top of the returned cars in USATODAY.

Buyer ............ BEWARE OF SELF-PROMOTERS. :emlaugh: :mrt:

The cars, priced at $28,400 fully loaded, were donated by Pontiac, according to the carmaker. Pontiac, a division of General Motors (GM: Research, Estimates), has also agreed to pay sales tax for each member of the lucky audience.

So if they were donated.....and I emphasize donated...did Oprah actually pay for them? Or were they purchased from Pontiac by Oprah then she donated the cars to the indivuduals?

O.K. Here's my unpopular opinion . . .

I think if they want the car they should pay the Taxes and if they don't want the car either sell it or forfiet the car.

So many times people get an opportunity and they can't see the forest for the trees. It still a gift that they all should be grateful for. Remember, there ISN'T anything that is free! Someone pays, always. And even if they choose to give it to you, you should be willing to do your part or make choices based on your need, yet still be appreciative.

If they are that dayam poor, why the "L" are they sitting up at Oprah's show instead of out trying to find a work to make their life better? (which some people can't handle what they got, less and alone have something better)

I understand that everyone isn't in the position to pay the taxes, yet they still should be thankful for the opportunity. It reminds me of the saying . . .Don't ask for something you can't handle, because it comes with it own set of problems and choices. :vomit:
Co-signing EACH and EVERY word Sis!

if they make minimum wage, no way they will be liable for 7000 dollars... the tax structure just isn't like that...

at most they are looking at is half that.... they can make payment plans with the govt. and still ride clean.

My thoughts exactly! If they want the car, pay the taxes. If not, forfiet the car & get squat or sell the car get the cash & STFU! :slap:

The discussion is about what is coming out of the gift-receiver's pockets...so whether Oprah or Pontiac paid is it irrelevant to them.

I understand what the thread is about.

But it has not been printed as of yet that anybody is COMPLAINING!

If I won a new car -- it doesn't have to cost $28,000, I will keep it. I would be delighted to own a car with the first two numbers of the year beginning with 20. My income isn't in the up to $7000 bracket, so if it looks like I would have a small balance due instead of a small refund. It wouldn't bother me any more than the 1099 received if I won a similar amount at a casino.

I was curious as to how the winners would be able to keep winnings in that amount without receiving a 1099.

Good point. Nobody yakking about it except the newspaper reporter that wrote the piece and the spectators :| :|

Incredible Marketing! Pontiac/GM and Oprah. Looking @ it from a business/media view...excellent! Mission accomplished.

HOWEVER:

Bottom line...you didn't see nor have you seen Oprah or the Pontiac/GM reps during the giveway stating anything about recipients paying $/taxes...etc.

This was a strategic marketing/promotion for all parties involved.
Personally, I believe if you're going to GIVE someone something free...GIVE it to them...no strings attached. Every car should have been a gift...and no one who recieved a voucher to get a car should have to pay anything.
This was an idea posed by Oprah's producer and executed by Oprah.
She didn't want to just give away cars. These were indeed people who were chosen by Oprah simply because @ some point and time they had written Oprah about the need for a car due to financial strains. JUST GIVE'M the dayum cars!

When you hear talk about this what do you hear:
OPRAH gave away over 200 cars. Did she really? I think not!

AAMUprettywoman...

There was nothing Oprach nor Pontiac could have done to avoid people having to pay INCOME taxes on those vehicles. Not a thing....

BTW, How are you doing?

I'm certain that almost any bank would let them come and borrow $7,000.00 to pay the taxes, with the car as collateral.....

:smug2:

They could have given the option to lease or own the cars.....car dealers and banks do it all the time in their giveaways.

Either way it is taxable by the IRS...plus on a lease they would have been paying taxes on something they wouldn't own in 2 years.

Anytime a car is given to you in a giveaway, it is considered a part of your income. It is considered a gift tax.

Winning a car myself, I knew I had to pay taxes on it.

The only thing that is free is SALVATION.

Even though a PRICE was PAID. ;)

I think they probably couldn't afford to lease a car anyway. The fact is Oprah and GM did a good thing. Unfortuately, these people will have to pay INCOME tax on those cars, there is nothing they can do about it.

Yeah...it's almost like someone complaining because they are hooked up with a great job, but later realize they have a load of taxes taken out of each check... You still end up with more than you had before.

Outside of forfeiting the car.
