Only two HBCU football players taken in the NFL draft:

51(252) Tampa Bay (Compensatory) LENNY WILLIAMS CB SOUTHERN and 52(253) NY Giants (Compensatory) ISAAC HILTON DE HAMPTON

The NFL will offer most HBCU football players free agent contracts. There really wasn't that much talent at Black Colleges in 2003.

i saw kids form div 3 schools get drafted before.i don't think it is a lack of talent as compared to just looking at big schools. teh wr form virginia tech sucked and he probably got drafted too. too many big names with small time talent.kids coming from the swac meac have it rough. that's we need this hbcu all star classic next year in neworleans. this will showcase our best to the nfl.this is rediculous.they draft bums off potential moer than anything.maybe teh swac has to get a 6'5 rec with 4.2 speed just to get a whiff of the nfl draft. you can't measure heart but i guess teh nfl has a test for that too now. :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken: :kaioken:

Looking at the draft, I saw several QBs drafted that had a lower rating than Kent had by the scouts. It seems like in the later rounds, the teams went for guys with the big-game/big-league experience rather than guys with more upside. Everybody's looking for the next Tom Brady. Once the 6th round is over, you're probably better off going the free-agent route anyway.

I saw that too. Not knocking Matt Mauck but I reall thought Robert Kent should have gotten drafted or something. IMHO they'll get kent for little to nothing just because he has the talent. Matt Mauck got drafted just because he was on LSU's national championship team, clearly not your prototypical NFL QB.

I know we'll see Kent, Manning and Tramon Douglas in an NFL uniform.

I don't see what the probelm is. There was not an abundance of talent from HBCU's this season to be drafted. And as far as them taking players from the power conferences, this year wa not different from any other. The fact that the Hampton kid was drafted speaks alot about NFL scouts. he wasn't even on anyone's radar until he had these awesome workouts. That normally doesn't happen for jkids from HBCU's. In many cases yiu have to have an unreal workout & have a remarkable season stat wise. That Hilton kid didn't put up impressive numbers last season.

With the exception of Kent, name me a player that was really worthy of being picked from the SWAC or MEAC. Tramon, would have been drafted, but he only ran 4.6. That stopped all of his draft talk. You can only run that slow as a WR when you have a frame like the kid from VaTech, Wilfork, that STC mentioned earlier. Hell even a slow 40 time dropped him from being a 1st or 2nd round pick.

I think Kent's draft 'stock' fell because of his senior season......

But I hope he can make somebody's roster......

And congrats on the other two that got drafted......:tup:

:dude:

Big ups to Lenny Williams and Hilton for getting drafted.

And it wasn't just I-A power conference QBs, they drafted Delaware's QB and a QB from Wyoming. I just hope Kent is smart enough to sign as a free agent with a team that will be needing a QB in a few years.

SOUTHERN U. Football JAGUAR:

WR......Chris Davis signed a free agent deal with the New York Football Giants!

KUDOS to Mr. Davis!!!

Are you talking about the roookie pool of money? The money allocated to each team to sign draft picks? That money is still available. I remember some anaylst talking about that yesterday and how after the 3rd round or so, most deals are about the same anyway...

Yes, and the owners know they don't have to spend big dollars on MEAC and SWAC players is why they don't draft our players. This pool of money was created to save dollars. I can recall the Oakland Radiers trying hide Joe Patton (AAMU) a fews ago and the Redskins stole him because they thought no one else knew about him. These NFL Scouts know about these players and know who will be around after the pool of money is used up. This is a business and I have seen some very good ball players in our conference.

Perfect example, Donald Driver I believe 7th round pick. They know they can get us for little or nothing. Unless a coach knows how to maximize the talent of his players they will become undrafted free agent.

NT........
You are 1000% RIGHT. The NFL has done this same thing for years. It still sticks in my mind what they did to Everson Walls that year. It finally leaked out that there was a 'genleman's' aggreement to not spend any money or draft picks on anyone below D-1 level especially the HBCU's. It was felt that these guys would be there and would be willing to sign a free-agent contract if they wanted them. The NFL see's this as an excellent way to get "what they call sleeper talent or unpolished talent" (meaning BLACK ATHLETES who did not play for 'white head coaches'.

An HBCU player makes the team, becomes a starter and ends up playing 3 years for the league position minimum while his counter part who 'rides the pine' at the same position makes 2, 3, 4 times more because he was drafted and has a signed contract.

But that pool of money that you are talking about is for ALL rookies coming into camp. Not just undrafted free agents. Truth be told, the highly regarded undrafted FA deals and the last round draft pick deals aren't that different in terms of money. Plus I feel that trying to seprate HBCU players from other 1-AA and Div II players is part of our problem. When it comes to the NFL draft, HBCU players aren't any more "slighted" for lack of a better word, than any other player from a 1-AA school or Div II school. The same question marks arise for them about level of competition, etc. They are all considered "sleeper" picks because they didn't play on the 1-A level or in a major conference. This again seems to be an issue where people want on inject race as a factor, when it is as far from the truth as you can get. Sports more than any other arena is about talent, and winning. And teams are going to get those players they feel will help them win.

Again I say, what HBCU players were overlooked in the draft? Just because we see a guy playing every weekend and he stars for us, doesn't mean that his game translates into the NFL game. Some players do get overlooked. But with the way the NFL scours all of college football, I think those that get overlooked are few and far between. Hell they picked dude from a school I never even heard of thios weekend. If they can find that kid, then they can find anyone. Truth is, some of our players just aren't as good as we think they are.

This was definitely a down year for HBCU talent but I expected 3 or 4 to go on day 2.Isaac Hilton ran a sub 4.6 and had an awesome workout but he also had mediocre stats as a senior.Curtis Deloatch should have been drafted but he there seemed to be a lot of good db's in this draft.I don't think there is such a thing as an HBCU bias when it comes to the NFL draft because we have had our share of 1st rounders but some scouts underestimate the small collge player because he didn't play in a BCS conference.Robert Kent lucked out because he can choose his situation instead of being drafted into a bad one.I can't wait until preseason to see these guys show off.

Didnt Bethune Cookman have 2nd rounder last year that cracked the starting lineup in Jacksonville after just a few games?

I think if we have the talent on our teams, the scouts will take notice and draft em high. We (on this and other boards) are biased towards our own players, but if we are honest with ourselves, we will see that a lot of these guys (Kent, Manning, Deloatch from A&T, etc) didn't have breakout senior seasons, and didnt have a realistic chance to get drafted.

I think if Kent had the chance to flourish one more season in Hughes' pass happy offense, I think his chances would have been a lot better. Manning and Deloatch's 40 times probably killed their chances.

Bears pay heed to need for speed

April 26, 2004

BY BRAD BIGGS Staff Reporter

The last thing you can accuse Bears general manager Jerry Angelo of is not thinking big.

Though he says he is not still stinging somewhat from the fallout of his second draft choice in 2002, cornerback Roosevelt Williams from tiny Tuskegee, he pledged to consistently go with players from major-college programs this year and delivered in Sunday's final four rounds. The Bears grabbed a player from the two schools that produced the most in the draft -- Ohio State and Miami (Fla.) -- and continued to add speed to their defense.

Just FYI.

As for Robert Kent not being picked in the draft lets be honest we all know who is the reason he didn't get drafted..........James Bell.

I refused to believe that all the players who were drafted are better than all the players playing football in the SWAC. I didn't see all those who got drafted play, but I will always believe we have some great players who should have been drafted. Kent can play with the best of the best.

I don't disagree. I think that we have some very talented players in our league. I never disputed that fact. And in many years past there were some players whom I felt were overlooked. But this just wasn't one of those years in my opinion....
