There are only about 500 tickets left for McNeese State's Aug. 31 season opener against Grambling State at Cowboy Stadium after a day of sometimes hectic and steady ticket sales at McNeese's Field house.
McNeese ticket manager Cheryl Bellard said general admission seats sold out by the end of business Monday afternoon. All that are left are $16 reserved seats. Those tickets go back on sale at 8 a.m. today.
Among the tickets that will be sold are some 200 seats that Bellard said have a partially obstructed view and normally don't get sold.
When the remaining tickets are sold to the 17,410-seat stadium, the game will become an official sell-out. However, that doesn't mean fans without tickets won't be allowed into the stadium.
McNeese will admit standing-room only fans on game day. Those fans will be seated on the embankments on the north and south end zones.
Fans lined up outside of McNeese's field house as early as 6:45 a.m. Monday to get their seats although the ticket office did not open until 8 a.m. By the time the doors opened, ticket buyers were lined up from the field house door all the way to the street between Cowboy Stadium and the track.
If the game sells out today, McNeese sports information director Louis Bonnette said it would be the fastest sellout in school history.
"No game has ever sold out the week before the game,'' he said.
McNeese has not had an overflow crowd since 17,825 fans crowded into the 1998 season opener against Southeast Oklahoma.
McNeese's attendance record is 27,500 for a 1976 game against USL. However, that crowd was only an estimate and came when the stadium was believed to seat 20,000.
Since McNeese went to official turnstile counts in the mid-1990s, the largest crowd was 20,180 for a 1995 game against Youngstown State.
