An Ole Miss fraternity has been suspended for a year after a university judicial council found members guilty of harassing a black student.

Delta Kappa Epsilon, a historically white fraternity, was also found responsible for assault, disorderly conduct, possession of alcohol and of hosting an unauthorized party.

The sanction is the result of an Aug. 22 incident when a freshman studentsaid he was harassed by members of the fraternity and asked to leave.

The university announced the decision today, after two days of hearings.

An all-white fraternity chapter that Ole Miss disciplined for harassment and assault of a black student said it will appeal a one-year suspension imposed Friday.

The University of Mississippi suspended Delta Kappa Epsilon after a two-day university Judicial Council hearing concluded that fraternity members harassed a black student who attended an Aug. 22 party.

Jeremiah Taylor, a freshman who filed the complaint two days after the party, would not discuss the case Friday afternoon, saying a friend advised him not to talk.

In media reports, Taylor said he was asked to leave the party, pushed down stairs and taunted about being on a "racial rush" list. He said he was afraid. http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070915/NEWS/709150349/1001/news
