What was the first rap song to hit number one the Billboards charts?

If I'm not mistaken, it was "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice back when I was in high school.

Aye, that was the jam back then...gotta give it up!

Please don't tell me that's the reason you pledged Alpha.

I think it was either Ice Ice Baby, or "Walk This Way" by RUN-DMC featuring Aerosmith.

NICE

Naw, it was TOP Ten, but not #1...

You know what?

It's probably "Blondie's Rapture"!!!

That song did go #1 back in the day, and some do consider that to be "Rap". :look:

Let me go check...

Your pretty ladies around the world
Got a weird thing to show you
So tell all the boys and girls
Tell your brother, your sister and your mamma too
we're about to go down
And you know just what to do
Wave your hands in the air like you don't care
Gilde by the people as they start to look and stare
Do your dance, do your dance, do your dance quick mamma
Come on baby tell me what's the word

Word up everybody says
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard

Now all you sucker DJ's who think you're fly
There's got to be a reason and we know the reason why
Why you put on thoso airs and you act real cool
Got to realise that you're acting like fools
If there's music we can use it
You're free to dance
We don't have the time for psychological romance
No romance, no romance, no romance for me mamma
Come on baby tell me what's the word

Word up everybody says
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway

Dial L for love, Dial L for love, Dial L for love
W.O.R.D. UP, W.O.R.D. UP, W.O.R.D. UP, W.O.R.D. UP

Yeh you sucker DJ's who think you're fly
There's got to be a reason and we know the reason why
Why you put on thoso airs and you act real cool
Got to realise that you're acting like fools
No romance, no romance, no romance for me mamma

Let me go check...

Blondie's "Rapture" was the first number one rap song. It was the second rap song to even show up on the charts after Sugar Hill's "Rapper's Delight" hit number 4 on the R&B charts in 1979. A lot of people say Blondie's Rapture was responsible for bringing RAP into the mainstream. Blondie even said "hip hop" in the song, that's what rap music is called today.

Rapture by* Blondie

Fab Five Freddy told me everybody's fly.
D.J. spinning, I said, "My, My."
Flash is fast, flash is cool.
Francois, c'est pas flashe non due.
And you don't stop, sure shot.
Go out to the parking lot.
And you get in your car and drive real far.
And you drive all night and then you see a light.
And it comes right down and it lands on the ground.
And out comes the man from Mars.
And you try to run but he's got a gun.
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head.
And then you're in the man from Mars.
You go out at night eating cars.
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too.
Mercurys and Subaru.
And you don't stop.
You keep on eating cars.
Then when there's no more cars you go out at night
And eat up bars where the people meet.
Face to face.
Dance cheek to cheek.
One to one.
Man to man.
Dance toe to toe.
Don't move too slow 'cause the man from Mars is through with cars.
He's eating bars.
Yeah, wall to wall.
Door to door.
Hall to hall.
He's gonna eat 'em all.
Rapture.
Be pure.
Take a tour through the sewer.
Don't strain your brain.
Paint a train.
You'll be singing in the rain.
Said don't stop to the punk rock.
Well now you see what you wanna be.
Just have your party on T.V.
'Cause the man from Mars won't eat up bars where the T.V's on.
And now he's gone back up to space where he won't have a hassle with the
human race.
And you hip hop.
And you don't stop.
Just blast off, sure shot.
'Cause the man from Mars stopped eating cars
And eating bars
And now he only eats guitars.
Get up!

This song is the SH@T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for being redundant, BUT IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!

The white groups back then were cool.

Just a few days ago I was listening to "The Clash"

The made "Rock The Casbah". To break that down for those not in the know, that's where Will Smith go the sample for "Willineum (It's Here And I Like It) ".

Hey, does white songs/groups fall under the category of Old School? Because I was also listening to Fleetwood Mac's Rumor cd. A classic.

I don't consider them Old School (I keep that strictly for REAL R&B and Soul Music).

I categorize it simply as "70's" or "80's", since that's the major time frame when OTHER music was bangin! :D

Shoot, I was listening to "Africa" by Toto just yesterday.
That song is STILL tight!
