By what concept is marriage supposed to be defined between a man and a woman? Religious, morality, nature/Darwinian (depending on who you talk to this can still be a religion)
The reason I ask this is, because atheist get married all the time, some in a church with a minister, (WHAT A CONTRADICTION!), some with a justice of the peace at the court house, (still a contradiction), and others with a judge at a court house or place other than a church.
So if some atheist have taken the religious aspect out of marriage, aren't they really just a civil union, truthfully all marriages are civil unions, the difference is that those who proclaim a religion, have a union recognized by their god as well as the state, where as non-religious people have a union recognized only by the state and/or whatever belief they choose.
So keeping the above in mind why shouldn't the G&L community be allowed to get married? It's a civil union, and where recognized G&L civil union couples are already afforded certain privileges that heterosexually married couples are afforded.
Another issue, the states that recognize common-law marriage for heterosexual couples, no justice of the peace, no minister, and no judge, but because you've been shacking for 5 years or more, then the state recognizes you as legally married. So where is the religious, moral, or Darwinian belief? It's just been thrown out, that's where.
One other point, calling it a states right issue, truthfully other states don't have to recognize your heterosexual marriage license now. I believe it's a courtesy each states grants to the other, I may be wrong and feel free to correct me in that good ole TSPN fashion.
The bottom line is this, President Obama stated his "current" views on the matter. Is it a political move, yes. Will it have negative and positive repercussions, yes. But nothing will happen before the end of the year, and depending on what type of congress we have, it may or may never come to fruition. So regardless of everything I wrote, my personal beliefs, and whether I agree or disagree with the president on this issue, there is a lot more at stake in November and the next 4+ years. The economy, current and maybe future wars, foreign relationships, and retiring Supreme Court Justice to name a few.
President Obama STILL HAS MY VOTE, what about you? (other than the two that have already stated, that they will sit out in November) and if you truthfully do this, don't complain, because you just became a part of the problem.
