NYSP funding cut from 2006 budget bill
July 25, 2005

INDIANAPOLIS --- The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), which has provided sports, life skills and educational programming to children from low-income families since 1969, has been eliminated from the FY06 budget bill. The $18 million program, hosted by many HBCU's across the country could be saved by the Senate next month. The next major action on this issue will occur after the August congressional recess period.

Despite its 'Sports' name, NYSP has a broad mission. Youth, ages 10-16, benefit from medical examinations and follow-up of pre-existing conditions prior to participating in the five-week summer program. NYSP ensures at least one healthy, USDA-approved meal daily, clothing, required swimming lessons, a math/science discovery program, drug and alcohol education and a safe, nurturing and disciplined environment at more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide. Last summer, over 75,000 youth participated in the program. ...

This is not good. Frustrating!!

The Republicans need to put an axe the elephants' trunk for their symbol. Chop.. Chop.. Chop. This is really sad.

Them bad ass kids need to be in boot camp somewhere.. I can only speak for AAMU's NYSP.... THEM KIDS ARE BAD. I saw them every day in the gym this year while I was in the weightroom... only they they did was FIGHT and cuss out the instructors. Then its about 45 kids to ONE instructor and about 400 kids in all. No way in hell you can watch over all those kids... Fights were breaking out everywhere.

Well, I spent 4 summers at AAMU's NYSP. I admit it kept me out of trouble. AAMU sent buses to the black neighborhoods all over the city. Those that were from my neighborhood (Pisgah/Belgrade) we did nothing but chase girls all day........., Yet I remember peeps from other neighborhoods did nothing but fight against each other (Mason Ct. vs. Lincoln Projects vs. the Norwood boys and so on). No guns or nothing like that, just street fights......,Man those were the good ole days...,

Woooah now, I wouldn't put it that extreme DAHILL. lol They never got out of hand. Except that one upstairs between the 4'5" girl and the 5'7" boy. :lmao:

Bush and the Republicans are the opposite of Robin Hood. Give to the Rich and take from the poor.

From what I read. It was an excellent program. But when you have Bush and that Fake Sista Rice who supports that garabage that he does. This is what you get.

I pray that this program does not get cut.

Im not only basing this opinion off of this past year... I use to be in NYSP... it was a mess then... Like bandfan said, its only a daycare for children with untrained supervision... Its like a local boys and girls club bringing in all new instructors with no experience at all.

:spin:

I am a former participant of NYSP of at least Thirty years ago. While I participated at a private non HBCU school, it was great. Now, my daughter worked a few years ago and she said the kids were bad but she could handle them. I don't know how much money the individual schools obtain to run the program but it appears maybe it is not enough personnel available to run the program effectively. Bush has cut it to the point it just difficult. Someone needs to get the Repubs on the right track!

some schools make their PE staffs and student assistants run it over the summer so they don't have to hire licensed folks....

I saw parents drop their kids off to NYSP..that was the fastest I've ever seen them put their kids out the car and drive off leaving smoke

My Mom used to drop us off every summer at NYSP at Gram. Ahhh..the memories. Hope it doesn't get cut at Grambling either.

I was in Upward Bound at SU in high school (I hope Bush' nem do not cut the TRIO programs) ....and you would see a sea of white t-shirts and white shorts and hear them lil bad arse kids... you knew NYSP was on the scene, jack...

But those kids were doing a helluva lot more fun stuff than I was doing during the summer...It was like "free eat/free lunch" in the summer..only you get to play in air conditioned gyms or swim during the day also...

at AAMU its usually male and female basketball players and I think they just use them to make sure they stay here over the summer.

Now UPWARD BOUND has a real good porpose... it should never be touched unless funding is UPPED for it. I have seen first hand through best friends how it is positive for students from disadvantaged backgrounds... My best friend went through upward bound all 4 years of high school at Alabama A&M... He graduated from college and is now over the Upward Bound program at University of South Alabama.

Here all the kids get bussed from the projects or any other low income housing or neighborhoods.

My brother saw AAMU's Upward Bound students at the Lincoln Memorial last week. I think the program is great! I did not know they were able to go on field trips like that maybe I would have participated 30 years ago.

Yes Upward Bound is a great program... It caters to high school students who are disadvantaged financially and also whos parents have not graduated from college... AAMU's Upward Bound goes on a week long trip at the end of every summer, usually up North or the East Coast.
