Stoker: Demons stronger, faster
Scott Ferrell / The Times
Posted on July 25, 2003

Northwestern State University head football coach Scott Stoker puts a lot of emphasis on his team's summer conditioning program. That much is evident by the fact only two Demons players didn't participate in this summer's voluntary workouts.

Stoker, who was in Shreveport on Thursday with the school's Purple Pride Tour, said his team goes into fall practice next month stronger and faster than the 2002 team. That team reached the Division I-AA playoffs a year ago.

"I'll tell you what's amazing is the true freshmen when they come in," Stoker said. "Guys like Ben Bailey, it's amazing how much his body changes with seven weeks of working out. They come in and look kind of frail. Now he's running 4.6 (40-yard dashes) every day as his body matured."

Bailey, an Airline High School product, could figure into the Demons' plans on offense in 2003 as a true freshman.

"I think Ben Bailey will probably play as a true freshman," Stoker said. "He's had a great off-season."

And a great off-season is essential for a team that will enter 2003 with Division I-AA playoff aspirations again.

"The only way you get an edge is in the summer," Stoker said. "To me, it's the most important time of the year, by far. Spring is important. But summer, because we're not out there with them, your leaders form. Your team chemistry forms. You've got guys pushing each other."

One position where players will be pushing each other is quarterback. Stoker said he would let all four of his quarterbacks on roster compete for the starting job, including incoming freshman Conner Morel.

Ryan Lewis, Gerard Barrow and Baylor transfer Davon Vinson will also be in the quarterback competition.

"We've got four guys and we're going to let 'em go," Stoker said. "It's who has the best scrimmage at the right time and is moving the team."

It's so nice to see a HORNET pass up a JSU post ................ Even one that was talking about Northweastern football team.

Barrow played at Southern Lab and was a good passer. But that dude Ryan Lewis put up some very big numbers at Central High (Baton Rouge). The Wildcats ran 4 and 5 receiver packages and Lewis was hitting receivers with bombs, outs, curls, slants. He was a helluva high school passer. Don't know how he stands now he was a mofo in high school.

With the way JSU's secondary got torched by Grambling last year...they might be in trouble. Northwestern has this sophomore receiver from Neville High ( Hell, I can't remember his name...mofo didn't go to Grambling) that is gonna give them fits.
But relax, he's good but he's no Tramon Douglas, Calvin Colquitt, Mose Harris, etc!

I just hope we dont embarrass the SWAC like Gram did when they played McNeese last year.

Im sure Kent wont go 4-20 or something like that

Dont worry, we will represent. Im sure you will find something to smack on anyway.

And Pneck....Im sure all of their QBs will ge a chance to throw TDs on us...just like Im sure yuour 8 QBs will get a chance to play against Allen and Lincoln.

BTW...how many of their QBs threw TDs against SU? You know, before your coward ass coach ran from them.

Actually, I think Jackson State is gonna win this matchup. Northwestern lost a lot of key people from last year. If Jackson does lose this game then you are in for a long season. The Demons have two good runningbacks from BR (Johnese and Sampson) who they will probably build the team around.

If you win, good. If you don't...no great personal loss to me. I just thought it would be good if our 4th or 5th best team from the SWAC could beat the 3rd best team from the Southland.

I agree MIKE

JSU chances of winning this game is equal too or better than GSU chances of winning. NWST won't be able to compete, if this game turns into a shootout as I expect it to happen. NWST always played close games with SU and lost half of those. JSU has a much better Offense and pretty much an equal defense to NWST this time around. My money is on JSU by more than 13 points.:) :)

Good Luck Blue Tiggers.:lmao: :lmao:

JSU should benefit from playing this game early in the season. The style of officiating in the Southland and the SWAC is different.
If JSU had played in SWAC officiated games first, then tried to play in games called by the Southland crew they might not be able to make the necessary adjustments. Not being critical of each, but based on a conversation with a frat bruh who officiates in the Southland, the style of officiating is "different".

If Bell implements a balanced attack, JSU chances to win improves (in my opinion). Past over reliance on Kent has led to problems from turnovers. No knock on Kent, but when you play your qb from under center more than 40% of the time, it because real easy to set up defensive schemes. Placing the qb under center with a running back, sets up play action and doesn't allow the defense to scheme 100% to stop the pass.

I'm afraid its a little too late for that. You see J-State's history in the 1-AA playoffs (by itself) has made the SWAC the laughing stock of all D-1AA football. It was your historical, cowardly performaces against schools like Montana State and William & Mary that created the myth that we (the SWAC) is afraid to play in the playoffs.

Good luck against NWst. I will be rootin' for ya.

That's a pretty good point. For some reason, Assberry would have Kent come from under center in a 4 or 5 wide set even when it was obvious teams were gonna blitz. Lots of times he was running for his life as soon as the ball was snapped.

Everytime jsu played Grambling...k"INT" was running for his life. Defensive pressure will do that for you.

Funny...that kinda reminds me how Assbury was running from Doug's punches! He had no defense for that either.

Love it.....This is what 9 arse kicking in 10 years on NBC does to ones psyche.

I swear sometimes coaches outsmart themselves with all the multiple sets and formations. Don't get me wrong, it's good to show defenses multiple looks but that don't win games. Good playcalling is what gets the job done. I must admit, I like our SWAC football but some of the playcalling leaves even the casual
fan saying..."What"?

I've seen games where coaches run play action on 3rd and long
or go 5 wide on 4th and short, then try a qb keeper. What is that? Just be sound fundamentally, recruit well, play with poise and discipline, have good play calling and win every championship in the 2K's. That's what the Icon does:cool:
