Word on the street is that the Clarion-Ledger won't be hiring another JSU beat reporter. Also, the small college sports section on the website where news of MVSU and Alcorn was sometimes posted has been removed. That says a lot about the state of HBCU sports. The state newspaper has warranted that HBCU sports isn't even worth their time anymore.

Ahhhhh yes.....

Welcome to the world of the Houston Chronicle featuring Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M.

We're used to it now.

That says a lot about the Clarion ledger and their parent company in Chicago.

The Clarion Ledger has been laying off people and cutting that newspaper to the bare bones since 2009. It's not just the HBCU sports, all them mofos have been cut. USM barely gets a mention now and the small schools, Millsaps, Belhaven, etc, may as well not exist.

The Clarion ledger is so small now, what used to be a 4 section newspaper is now crammed into 2 foldout sections daily. News and State is in one foldout section labeled A and B. Sports and Lyfestyle is in the other foldout section labeled C and D. Forget highschool unless it is about someone signing a schollie.

I don't even buy them anymore.

I know, right. My aunt who lives in Jackson says she ain't never seen a paper so thin.

Newspapers are having issues all across the country. I believe the New Orleans Time Picayune has a 2 day a week newspaper nowadays. People are getting their news from the internet. In some smaller markets, newspaper/companies have resorted to charging patrons to view their news online.

I stopped buying them in 2010 when I stopped working for them on the weekend. That is when they started laying off people and started this "going to internet" thing. They layed off half of circulation and let a lot of writers and staff go. My position in IT was never filled again.

The SUNDAY paper that used to be as thick as a Bell South Telephone book is like the weekly paper used to be, stuffed with about 100 advertisement flyers.

It's not just in small markets.....The Houston Comical has sections that are just for subscribers.

Paper copies are becoming extinct. The future is electronic subscription.

Right. Just this past year The Times Picayune out of New Orleans laid off 1/3 of its staff.

That's how The Sunday Advocate used to be. The Classifieds used to be think. Now, it may be like 4-5 pages.

Ive been stopped buying the clarion ledger. I use to even deliver them each day. The only way I see one now is if Im subing for someone to do their route.

On my street, everybody used to get the Clarion Ledger delivered. There were so many "delivery marks" on our street in front of driveways, it looked like a graffiti artist spray painted the street. Now you have to actually look for people that subscribe to that paper.

The only one left is the house right across the street from me. The delivery person put out a blue reflective road marker at the end of their driveway on the street. . That is the only one I can find now.

I understand that's it's the digital age, but to not have a beat writer for an athletics department that is in your very own city, yet have full time writers in other cities like Oxford and Starkville seems backwards.

Are you trying to get a promotion? :emlaugh: It just seems that you're jockeying for something. I'm sure the Clarion will continue their 2nd rate coverage of jsu. If not then organize and spear head a movement. WBLT made national news yesterday regarding Evers being an activist to integrate news in Jackson. Don't talk about it, be about it. What are you going to do?

the other 9 swac schools who want to know everything that's going on at JSU. They feel crippled w/o it.

I know they about to die.. First, there is NO bad news coming out of Jackson.. then they don't have a beat to follow. I am sure they go to jsutigers to get their fix.

TP, you all don't deserve a beat writer and I'm pretty sure no one goes to the Clarinet to spy. :emlaugh: Let's look at what jsu has done and you will understand why I don't feel like you all deserve any press:

Football: 1 Conference Championship in 16 years (0-13 in out of conference post season play)
Basketball: 0 NCAA basketball tourney wins in 34 years (1 NIT win)
Baseball: 0 NCAA baseball playoff wins in 34 years

I don't know what to tell you but you all are not doing that well. :emlaugh: Perhaps the folks at the local newspaper are tired of spending the money following you all. I was appalled when looking at the way you all have faired since moving to the NCAA. You all probably should have stayed in the NAIA.
