And this is the same reason that I'm hesitant about the whole conference moving up FBS. Yes we'll still play nine games against ourselves one against an FCS School but other two games will be beat downs. It's like knowing that every team in the conference is starting off the year 0 and 2. So the only reason to move the FBS is to turn that check against Auburn from $600,000 to $900,000.

Appalachian St is a rare. They are one of the few who actually moved up and did something. Schools like Troy St, Marshall and Georgia Southern are struggling now they're in FBS.

Plus, a lot of our schools are still at the mercy of the state government. So, I would tread lightly on this subject.

couple of things. 1. you get to play 12 games as a fbs team, not 11 so you get more revenue off the bat b/c of the extra game. 2. your numbers are too small in regard to the paid guarantee for a team like auburn. they paid akron 1.8 million in 2021.
lastly, regarding playing competition outside of the swac as a fbs team, there will definitely be an adjustment period. it doesn't matter how good you were as a fcs team, it'll take some time to become your better self, but can be done. coastal carolina has been in the top 25 like the last 2 seasons!! again, if they can do it... so can we.
let's use jackson state as an example and I'll use my bias about the 2 ways this could go down.
If JSU left the swac and joined the sunbelt or cusa, those loses you talked about if the entire conference moved up?... instead of being 2 games it's 6 or 7. they aren't walking in and going 12-0. let's say 6-6. If the conference moved up, they play a swac slate and we're all adjusting, they go 9-0 in conference, play a fcs school for homecoming, 10-0 a p5, 10-1 and a cusa squad... so 10-2 or 11-1 , + conference championship game so 11/12 wins and they go to a bowl game.
Attendance. do I think jsu would average more fans in the sunbelt than they would in a fbs swac???...??? heck no. they not averaging 50k playing UL-monroe (the usm game would be off the hook though, not that they'll play jsu if they think they'll lose).
not only that but famu wins 7 conference games and finished 8-4 so they get a bowl game spot as well. maybe we squeeze a 3rd team into a bowl game.
Even if you believe JSU doesn't go 6-6 because you're wearing your blue shades and you say they go 10-2 and get a bowl game... they're the only one getting a bowl game. there is no 2nd and potentially 3rd swac team in a bowl. We also know there is a trickle down to the other sports if the football team is fbs, so our other sports miss that bump in prestige from being a fbs school.
WE have something that none of these other schools and conferences can offer. We are the culture. "For us by us" is a real thing as opposed to what a clemson has where it's "for them by us." our ancestors built that school only to be discarded in unmarked graves on the campus and for them to erect a statue of the slave owning founder in the middle of campus. Our kids go there because we don't give them any alternative. Where can they go and be with their people at the highest level? Where can young black coaches go and run their own program at the highest level? We have to have a vision, a plan, push back our fear and step into the moment.

We just need to stick to playing low-tier G-5 teams. Because, Howard, North Carolina, and Bethune-Cook man showed us the way.

With the exception of 2023 and 2027, Alabama doesn't have the space to add another non-conference opponent in the future. There's also a strong possibility that SEC will go to a 9 or even 10 game conference schedule when Oklahoma and Texas joins the SEC in 2025. And if that happens, then Alabama's list of non-conference opponents will truly shrink.
I don't think Alabama has played an in-state FCS opponent since the World War 2 era.

The point is to help out a smaller HBCU which is what I replied to. Valley's football team would probably destroy CAU on the field but at least you could help CAU get some in roads as far as Mississippi HS/JUCO talent (because D2 schools probably would rely on HS talent right now and develop them more than D1 schools)
You could hype it up during the week as far as two HBCUs meeting with a halftime BOTB (I think Valley's former ABD is still the BD at CAU). Valley gets a win and CAU gets a check. Everyone is happy

If there is leverage to be gained politically for the Alabama Athletic program, I think Saban will make it happen. Saban marches to his own beat in Tuscaloosa and the State of Alabama. The key will be if the HBCU wanted to play that game. Auburn has already played AAMU and ASU.

Saban cannot make that happen even if he wanted to. It is policy at UA that it plays no in-state schools in varsity football. Even Bear Bryant could not make that happen. he had several coaches he was close to who were head coaches at in-state schools and did not play them. The former athletic director at Troy went to work in the UA athletic department under Mal Moore and Troy could not get a game. The daughter of the former athletic director at A&M worked for Saban and Saban offered to give him a game if the policy was changed.

I respect your answer and definitely your research. In Tuscaloosa, I have to remind you of the school house door and Bear Bryant's reluctance to have black players on the University of Alabama football team. The A.D. is a figure head. Saban controls the football program. At one time the same procedure was in place for the Basketball team. Thus, that has changed.
