Here is a Blog with former JSU player Ryan Lothridge and Sports columnist Rod Walker......

Man...I forgot how much talent came through Murrah in the late 80's and early 90's..

Below is some excerpts from the Blog.......Check out the link there is some other good stuff in there..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
RW: What do you remember about those Murrah teams in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

RL: It was quite legendary when I came out. You had Hollywood (James Robinson), Lindsay Hunter, Othella, Ronnie Henderson. Jessie Pate. I came in that era and it seemed like we always had some NBA talent coming through Murrah. It’s a really nice fraternity to be in. To be mentioned as one of them is just an honor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
RW: What are some of your fondest memories from JSU?

RL: .I had a lot of moments that I won’t forget. . Playing against Penny (Hardaway) in college and of course playing against Arkansas the year they won it. And of course when we beat UCONN in the NIT. I had 17 in the first half.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
RW: Give me your top five high school players to come through Mississippi.

RL: I’d have to put Hollywood at No. 1. I always thought that James was the best high school player that I ever saw. Chris Jackson. Othella Harrington. I’d probably say Ronnie Henderson and probably Johnny Bingham from Bailey. People may not remember Johnny. He was about 6-8 and played the 2-guard. He was unbelievable. One of the most talented players I have ever seen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

RW: Oh, I have a harder one for you. Top five players to ever come through Murrah.

RL: James Robinson. Steve Galloway. Othella Harrington. (a short pause).

RW: You can say yourself too if you want.

RL: No, I can’t fool with these boys. And Ronnie Henderson and Jesse Pate.

RW: That’s a pretty good list. But do you realize you left off someone who played in the NBA All-Star game last year (Mo Williams)?

RL: Ohhhhhhhhhh. That’s right. But I can’t take any of those other guys off.

Murrah used to have some sick teams. One of my partners played with Steve Galloway on the team that went 41-1. Those teams with Harrington, Henderson and Pate were no joke. All lead by Coach Jordan who didn't believe in pulling up. His starters played damn near the entire game, if they didn't foul out. Up 100, they still gunning. Kill a flea with a sledgehammer.

Yeah in the blog he (Lothridge) said it was so much talent at Murrah that he was n't even suppose to play. He only got to play his senior year because one of the guys turned 19 before the season started and he got to play.

Othella Harrington
Ronnie Henderson
Lindsey Hunter
Jesse Pate
Mo Williams
James "Hollywood" Robinson

Johnnie Bingham might've been the best of them all. Just couldn't get them grades right. He actually signed with JSU after going thru some JUCO in parts unknown. Of course he never made it to campus.

They lost to Monticello, after the state championship didnt they. I saw that game on tape.

Ryan was boss. Man games were packed when he played at JSU. Lanier was no joke either. My boy Jerry Nichols was a beast. Should have never went to Georgetown. Kind of like the kid from Provine who's playing at Syracus Harralston. Monte is a beast too. Jackson is loaded with NBA talent.

Yeah, they lost to Lawrence County High, lead by Vandale Thomas and Erik Dampeer. They played like the Bad Boys Pistons. Straight D'd you up.

Mane, Jerry Nichols was the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!! I got about 20 games on tapes now at the house.....smh that dude got straight screwed by John Thompson.......Rod Barnes tried like hell to get him at Ole Piss......

There was alot of go around then....Strib had them along with that smalltown Delta talent....Moreland at TSU made his living off Jackson and Wiz had them coming also...

unfortunately, the big schools noticed and you got Jackson kids everywhere they shouldn't be playing at

The RL Hortons who could average 20 a game in the SWAC are role players in CUSA

but I think Charlie White and Provine signeled the end as how it's not the same anymore when you get local stars

lawrence County.

Those were two good teams but that Murrah team didn't take that game seriously.
That is the game that got this Overall Silver ball State Champ tournament started that is played today.

Jessie Pate and a couple of others didn't even practice that week.
I remember Rob Jay interviewing Ronnie Henderson about some of the players that were not there.
Ronnie said Jessie might be somewhere watching cartoons or something.
He practiced the day before the game.

wasn't George Ivory a Murrah grad?

Yep. George was at Murrah when I was at Callaway. All of us grew up together.

Murrah had players like Ricky Short and Donnell Allen that you youngsters don't remember. Both of those guys could ball. They also had this player named Derrick Lindsey that was their Qb in football and went on to Ole Miss.

Jackson High Schools have always produced good ball players. Murrah probably has had the most over time. But Provine, Lanier, Wingfield, Forest Hill and Callaway have put some out there.

We had Lancaster Gordon, Eddie Archie, Aaron Brandon, Harry and Pat Kelly, Mark Coleman roll out of Jacktown. Not to mention Mr. Mean Larry Smith was from the crib too.

The SWAC used to get alot of these guys too. Strib, Whitney, Covington and like TBF said Moreland lived off some of these guys.

Hell PV recruited all 4 of my classmates that started at my HS in 84. Reginald Jones was Freshman of the year I believe back then.

LOL. I aint as old as him. I just remember those guys. I was behind them in school.
Lancaster was a bad boy at Jim Hill. His sister could ball too.

Lancaster and Milt Wagner were the best backcourt in college when they played at Louisville.

Man Lancaster is the only dude I know got his
junior high jersey retired.

Go in Blackburn's gym right now, you'll
see Lancaster's jersey high up on the wall :lmao:

Kenny O'Banner................

Yep. I almost forgot about him. He went on to JSU after Murrah. I grew up around the street from Kenny. Covington had him, Audie Norris, Slyvester Norris, Doc Shavers and I can't think of the other cat right now that played Forward. The Norris boys were from Jackson. Audie broke the backboard against Alcorn and they had to reschedule the finish of that game. LOL.

We was at that game.
That big mofo came in from the left side and glass went everywhere.
People were running to the court to get peices of it as keepsakes.
They didn't have a backup board in the Coliseum.

I think at that time, only him and Daryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins was breaking backboards.
