New York Bans Most Trans Fats in Restaurants
By THOMAS J. LUECK and KIM SEVERSON
Published: December 6, 2006

The New York City Board of Health voted yesterday to adopt the nation?s first major municipal ban on the use of all but tiny amounts of artificial trans fats in restaurant cooking, a move that would radically transform the way food is prepared in thousands of restaurants, from McDonald?s to fashionable bistros to Chinese take-outs.

Some experts said the measure, which is widely opposed by the restaurant industry, would be a model for other cities. Chicago is considering a similar prohibition that would affect restaurants with more than $20 million in annual sales.

?New York City has set a national standard,? said Harold Goldstein, executive director of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, who predicted that other communities would follow suit.

Trans fats are the chemically modified food ingredients that raise levels of a particularly unhealthy form of cholesterol and have been squarely linked to heart disease. Long used as a substitute for saturated fats in baked goods, fried foods, salad dressings, margarine and other foods, trans fats also have a longer shelf life than other alternatives.

Trans Fats Ban

Thoughts?

New York just need to ban everything except filtered water and wheat bread.
Bloomburg is pushing to ban something every week seems like.

And to think.....................All these food bans started with some MoFo sueing McDonalds because they had no self control or common sense.

After a food ban comes another smoking ban.
My guess is someone is going to ban smoking in your car and home next under some bullshat cause.

I could not have summarized it any better. I've been saying that FOR YEARS. as of 2007 smoking on my job will be as bad as drinking on the job or drugs. and yes, next it will be smoking ANYWHERE. They've already attempted to ban smoking in public parks and on beaches in California. They'll be back to push that through.

Ain't nothing wrong with a smoking ban in public places. Who wants to inhale that sh@t??!!!!!! There's nothing wrong with the trans fat ban as well. Folks need to stay way from grease as it is. This is just helping them cheat and they don't know it.

Transfat will be a thing of the past soon - its too costly for food industry to have different foods for NYC, PHL (and others) and the state of Mass.

Bill seeks to ban trans fats from Massachusetts

By Jason Szep
Tue Dec 19, 8:03 PM ET

BOSTON (Reuters) - A lawmaker introduced a bill on Tuesday that would make Massachusetts the first U.S. state to ban artificial trans fats from restaurants, closely following New York City's ban of the artery-clogging oils.

"We have an opportunity to vastly improve public health by directing restaurants to switch to healthier alternatives," Peter Koutoujian, a Democratic representative in the Massachusetts Legislature, said in a statement.

The bill uses language similar to new regulations announced this month by New York City, but marks the first effort to force restaurants in an entire state to stop frying foods in oils that contain high levels of trans fats.

So you need government to tell you how to live "healthy" and make the right choices.

How about this? Smoking is one thing... we can see and smell the smoke when someone is doing it and just avoid it. How do we know when trans fats are in our foods? This is not about government control of US... this gives us a chance to know when we are being fed this type of fat. No one even knew this was bad for you until recently, and there was definitely no way to know it was in the foods from taste and the naked eye.

There is nothing wrong with them at least TELLING us it is there.

Aren't they already removing Trans Fat from all the foods we eat now, anyway? What's the big damn deal, if it's healthier for us, I'm all for it.

Next on the aganda:
Banning restaurant's from using salt while cooking...............Just Watch.

That's bad for you also.
The "I don't like it" crowd gonna save us from potential High Bloodpressure next?

After all....................People are too stupid to cut back on salt intake ourselves.
That's the government's role.

Question: Where do you stop with these bans?
Remember this all started with that comical lawsuit against McDonalds.

Either way the government has to be involved to put regulations out there that meke companies TELL us that they are using trans fats.

Yall sound like people who would have complained about the government putting regulations on asbestos and lead paint. :shame:

Nope..................You sound like a person that will take an absurd example to try and make an excuse for all these whinney people that don't have the brains to take care of themselves without someone telling them how.

Lead and asbestos is one thing.
Silly bans on anything that a select group deems unacceptable is BS.

Telling me your gonna "take something away" from me for my own good AFTER I regulate the intake of FAST FOOD MYSELF is another.

Anyone with an IQ over 10 should know that fast food is not good for you on an everyday basis............TRANS FAT OR NOT.
Remember..................Before TRANS-FAT there was portion size.
Remember those threats and lawsuit's to get fast food restaurants to quit serving BIGGIE SIZE MEALS.

As for smoking:
Smoking bans by a loose timeline:
Not at desk --- Only in smoking rooms.
Then no smoking inside.
Then only outside.
Then only in designated areas outside.
Then only in smoking sections.
Then no smoking on company grounds period.
Then no smoking on public property....City wide.
Then no smoking in PRIVATELY OWNED BUSINESSES............(people too dumb not to come in a place that allows smoking)

Now these fool have a lawsuit out to make it ilegal to smoke in your car and home if you have children.
And yes................All those above were seperate lawsuit's.

I just used smoking as an example to show how 1 ban get's others, and other, etc., in the name of the GREATER GOOD.

I alway's said when that first inch was given, the whole yardstick was going to get gobbled up.
Nobody has the spine to tell people to take care of they damm self.

But..................I ain't worried.
One day a ban is going to come that affect's the "get over it" crowd.

Once some clown target something that affect's you because they don't like it, then all hell will break loose.

Keep sitting back and accepting anything in the name of "greater Good".
You gonna wake up one day and have to ask permission to get out of bed for fear you might be breaking some law.

Dude trans fats have nothing to do with portion sizes. Come on man. It is a health risk that is higher than just overeating.

Again.................You missing the entire point.
Forget the food, forget smoking.................ok.

The point is:

THESE GOVERNMENT/LAWSUIT CREATED BANS ARE OUT OF CONTROL across the entire spectrum..

The government, with the rising costs of healthcare, has an interest in making sure citizens are AWARE of what we're putting into our bodies and the harmful affects. So i have no problem with forced labeling. However I draw the line at out-right banning products unless the public risk outweighs it's benefits (like lead paint, asbestos). Trans-fat is bad for u but I'm not sure where it fits into this.

As for smoking, I have no problem with banning smoking in any public area. The dangers of second-hand smoke is well known. It's not a private thing because it affects any and everyone close to you. Anyone who's sat beside a smoker in a stadium knows what i'm talking about.

How are they out of control?? What rights have we lost or are losing because of them??

Not the fact that we have lost but what we will lose because this is only the beginning!

Have you ever seen the movie "Demolition Man" with Westley Snipes and Sylvester Stalone? In the movie the government had control over everything and had banned everything the people in the movie enjoyed; sex, alcohol, salt, etc. " Any thing bad for you is illegal" sort of thing and thats where we are headed.

Pretty soon cigaretts and tobacco products will be out lawed... you cant smoke anywhere now anyway!

ProfK, as of Jan 1, 2007, tobacco products were I work will be considered as illegal as alcohol. All tobacco products are BANNED from our work site/company. This is incredible. who/what was powerful enough to push this through on people? Next they will be saying you can't smoke IN YOUR OWN HOUSE!!!!

I wonder if one day rap/HH music will come under attack. It has had free rein to say what it wants for decades even if it is hurtful, homophobic, "racist" against non-blacks, whatever. What happens when that comes under attack?

The fact is nothing has been banned. Even if the gov't wanted to ban alcohol, cigs and other vices(and there are plentywho want to), it'll never happen because of the lesson's learned during Prohibition. America is still a free-market and as long as we remain one, you'll never see an outright banning of commerce. The powerful business lobby will never let that happen. That's why these restrictions don't worry me.

?? i can't legally (key word) get a simple beer in my town/county on sunday. that's a pretty good ban to me. if you are caught smoking where i work after Jan 1, 2007, it will be equivalent to drinking alcohol on site which will get you fired immediately. I mean, the anti-cigarette movement has got to be one of the most successful movements of all time. They have been successful in VILLINIZING cigarette smokers and changing the whole culture of how we view smokers. Smokers openly discriminated against, yet we are supposed to be so tolerant of others. next it will be food. those are bans if you ask me.

Prof K, Stagalee, and all you other libertarians:

My heart is with ya'all, but I think transfats are a special case, because unlike salt, they are 1) artificially man-made, 2) so ubiquitous they are nearly un-avoidable, even to diligent label readers, and 3) according to my cardiologist uncle, EXTREMELY harmful. The problem seems to be that the chemical alterations made to transfats, which make them so useful, also make them extremely difficult to metabolize.

The chemistry is beyond me, so all you chemistry majors out there chime right in.

Here is one reference, from Vanderbilt University:
http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/psychology/health_psychology/Transfat.htm#What is trans fat?

For all you label-readers: anything "hydrogenated" is transfat. Apparently the reason we love the taste of transfats is that, unlike natural fats, transfats do not become rancid. It seems that is why they are so popular in both packaged and prepared foods, among both conumers and food companies.

Very interesting info there Native. I just get sick of more and more regulations. It never ends, and that's when people with social/political agendas get involved trying to shape the world in their image. I say (within reason, and this may be within reason, dunno) let ME/people decide. We have a free enough economy that someone will use NOT using transfats in their food at all as a business model and that will give people choice. As more and more information comes out like you have here, people can read for themselves and then choose. I'd rather it work itself out like that than having yet another governmental regulation. Now of coarse mugz can bring up all kinds of things were governmental regulation is a good thing. I just think something like this can be left to people to decide as individuals, just like drinking alcohol/smoking(in the past) etc.

stagga, that's why I like you bruh. We think along the same lines. These bans are getting ridiculous, and more outrageous. You, and Prof K. are right, these are only baby steps to something bigger.

No smoking in public, no drinking in public, no dark tint on your car windows, your pants can't hang off your arse, no gambling unless it's state regulated, no pornography, no prayer in schools, rapist, and molesters have to be registered, but murderers, drug dealers, and thieves don't.......man, the land of the free, you gotta love it.

It's only a matter of time before the draft returns, and you'll have to go fight a war that YOU don't agree with.

NICE
