New SWAC Baseball Tournament Format

Eight teams are going and there will be 2 separate tournaments. I really hate the format with the winners of each touranment meeting for one game in the finals.

2 separate tournaments? :retard:

when does this start, this season? or next year in 09?

Pitching, pitching, pitching and more pitching. If your favorite team loses the first game, ya'll might as well start thinking about next season. Going through the losers bracket is like trying to climb Mount Everest when many SWAC teams don't have the pitching depth.

There is not two separate tournaments. There are now eight teams, meaning there is a top and bottom side of the bracket.:xeye: :pimp: :mrt:

There are not 2 tournaments, there's 2 brackets.......

Yep, it's a A and B bracket with the winners of those brackets playing eachother for the championship.

A lot of tournaments are moving to this format. The Sun Belt and Southland have as well. I'm a big proponent of it all (outside of the championship format, though that makes sense). It's like playing in a regional with a super regional championship (just a one-game format). Allows two more teams a post season opprotunity.

Looks like the dates at the bottom of the picture need to be fixed. They're showing the games taking place in April instead of May..

That's why I hate this format because it kills your pitching, I think the SWAC tournament should consist of 4 teams, if your not in the top two in the west or east to bad.

Well its not 2 tournaments but I'm sure you understood what I meant.

The format being used is the format the ncaa implemented for the college world series up until a few back. 6 teams were cool the last few years. this is the 1st year with 8 teams, i guess they are trying something. playing without a run rule could result into long games and long days.

besides jag-br, sujagtill, and black panther who from the swacpage is going to any games????

Exactly. With this many teams the quality of play will decrease.

I'll probably be there.

oh yeah, I just read the whole article and see that the tourney is in Baton Rouge.

Guess now we'll have to beat yall and your umps.
:retard:

LOL!

carry on....

Im a huge SU baseball fan, didn't have to read a article to know where the tournament is being held. I only missed 3 home games this season, and even made the trip to LA to watch my baseball Jags play USC and UCLA.

If they are insistent on bringing 8 teams to the tournament, I would prefer they take the format of the Big 12 and ACC tournaments, where there are two pools of four teams, each of which play a round robin, with the pool winners meeting in the final. Four games max, in four days.

Remember when
Southern (26-16) and Alabama State (13-20), who will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, last played on May 2, 2002, the opening day of the SWAC tournament in Shreveport.

The Jaguars won 20-2 behind home runs from Rickie Weeks, now playing second base and leading off for the Milwaukee Brewers, and Fred Lewis, now playing left field and leading off for the San Francisco Giants, and Robert Primus. Antoine Gray, an All-American third baseman, batted second.

Rare buzz
Alabama State has been an infrequent participant in the SWAC tournament. The Hornets last went 0-2 in 2006, losing 29-1 to Alcorn State in an elimination game and 11-10 to eventual champion Prairie View in the first round. Alabama State was 0-2 in 2002, with the blowout loss to SU and a 13-4 loss to Texas Southern.
