N.C.A.A. Scrutiny Seen on Tennessee’s Recruiting

Published: December 8, 2009

The N.C.A.A. is conducting a wide-ranging investigation into the University of Tennessee’s football recruiting practices, according to interviews with several prospects, their family members and high school administrators. A significant part of the investigation is focused on the use of recruiting hostesses who have become folk heroes on Tennessee Internet message boards for their ability to help lure top recruits.

Lane Kiffin, the football coach at Tennessee, which confirmed an N.C.A.A. inquiry.

N.C.A.A. officials have visited four prospects and are scheduled to visit two others this week in an investigation covering at least three states. The inquiry is unusual in its scope and its timing. It is rare that the N.C.A.A. looks at this wide a swath of one university’s recruits before the players have signed with a program in February.

Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton confirmed that an investigation was under way but declined to elaborate.

“Typically, we do not comment on inquires that are in progress,” he said Tuesday night in New York.

Since Tennessee Coach Lane Kiffin took over in December 2008 after being fired as the Oakland Raiders’ coach, the Volunteers have committed at least six secondary N.C.A.A. violations — unintentional violations that provide minimal recruiting or competitive advantage.

Interviews with multiple recruits and their family members revealed that the N.C.A.A. has strong interest in Tennessee’s use of recruiting hostesses, students who are part of a formal group at the university that hosts all manner of prospective students at campus visits, including athletes. It is not clear whether the university sent the hostesses to visit the football players.

In one case, hostesses traveled nearly 200 miles to attend a high school game in South Carolina in which at least three Tennessee recruits were playing.

Marcus Lattimore, a running back who made an unofficial visit to Tennessee but said he would not enroll there, said multiple Tennessee hostesses attended a game at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., in September. He said they brought signs, including one that read, “Come to Tennessee.”

“I haven’t seen no other schools do that,” he said. “It’s crazy.”

The hostesses are considered representatives of the university, which would mean they could not recruit players off campus. Therefore, the visits may be considered violations of N.C.A.A. recruiting rules.

Two of Lattimore’s teammates, Brandon Willis and Corey Miller, have orally :emlaugh: committed to Tennessee. Lattimore described the hostesses as “real pretty, real nice and just real cool.” He said he thought they had “a lot” of influence in Miller’s and Willis’s commitments to Tennessee.

Goes back to what I been saying...

We constantly bring up SMACK brand new state of the art "facilities" (A weight room with all the necessities all do the same dayum thing) and all that other crap these PWC have over us as to WHY they get our top BLACK athletes over us HBCUs is total crap.....

These people would go at any lengths to take up ALL of our BEST and biggest talent..... (Blind Side send help)

All that has to be done is a nation wide campaign to educate the parents and young students that the NFL/NBA/MLB scouts go where the TALENTS are...

Bring OUR talent back to OUR schools and the HBCUs will be in a MUCH better position than what we have ever been since the early years when PWCs would dare want to recruit a black kid......

bruh,
I agree with you on a 100%

Pop,

Honestly as a high school football student.. Did you care what a facilities looked like.. are did you and your other team mates care more about what schools were getting looked at the most by pro scouts?

Seems to me if all the top BLACK athletes go to the HBCU's and brought HBCU football to another level as to where MANY more kids were getting drafted into the pros... it wouldn't be hard at all to attract many more top athletes of all races...

Along with all that exposure come BIG name sponsors.... Sponsorship means MORE money.... More Money means BIGGER and BETTER facilities...

Then and only then SU can build a stadium that holds 60k... then and only then can JSU build their first ever stadium.... then and only then GSU can build a bigger stadium.... so on and so forth....

NAACP and the Black Caucus should have been making this initiative....

That's part of the reason I can't bring myself to be fully involved with following BCS football.... Yeah the game is faster, BETTER and on all the right tv stations..... BUT why is that?!?!? Because of OUR kids....

We need to get "our" best talented kids to be apart of history... Turn sports around to where we are not being prostituted any more...

Jared,
Everyone wanted to go pro. Even though my dad was a former JSU player and I went to the Bayou Classic all the time, I never thought about applying to an HBCU. I had NFL dreams and I just wanted to play on TV. I committed to USM in Summer 2002 and as far as I was concerned, that is where I was headed. Then, Bower fired his entire offensive staff and I never heard another peep. I actually got recruited to JSU because one of the coaches saw me on film playing against another guy they were recruiting (Lorenzo Breland). Our families were good friends and so the connection was made. That is how I got to JSU.

The sad thing is that I always hear other blacks putting down on black colleges. I heard nothing but praise for attending JSU from all my white cohorts.

SU Trpt, you aint doing nothing but telling the truth and shaming the devil. These white folks will go to any extreme to recruit. yall seen HE GOT GAME when they had Ray Allen with those white girls and showing him mansions. My ex girl lives in Monroe, LA and she tells me all the time of how in Monroe they rezone black neighborhoods so that the kids can attend these white schools and play sports for them. And in West Monroe, they will go to the family with the best athletes and pay for them and their family to live in West Monroe so they can play football. We do need to educate these parents who all they see is $$$ and not how these white coaches and colleges are using them. Dont even get me started on that movie the Blind Side. Yeah they only really cared for ole dude bc he could play ball while its millions of black kids with broken families who cant play ball will be left in the street.

Another thing, why yall think these some of these black kids get into so much trouble when they get to these schools?? B/c if if aint on the field these coaches dont give a damn about them. At least with coaches like Eddie Rob, Casem, Pete they were training these boys to be great young men not just great football players.

That makes too much sense... but knowing the history of this board it will be folk on here that say... it's the ALUMNI fault why the POWERFUL PWCs take our kids and why we can't get them....

It's almost like some of our HBCU grads go work around a bunch of these PWC grads and let them brain wash them into thinking it all OUR fault...

That's some job the WTs did on some of our people... :shame:

Another nail into Kiffin's coffin.

We are our own enemy! I have family members that would never want to attend an HBCU. All they talk about is Ole Miss and MSU. They are brain-washed!

You would be surprised as to how much I hear this is across the board...
:shame:

Like Luv said-these kids want to go PRO because that is all they have been told. Even if they can't play at a pro level.

When I saw this story, I thought of He Got Game too.

Those kids know what school is the easier pathway to the pros. HBCU are not it despite the few that have made it. Look at how many guys from noname schools are playing in the pros versus HBCUs?

And HBCU sat on their hands and didn't see the writting on the wall. HOw can HBCU fight PWC with thier tv deals, video games and large number guys in the pros?

why yall think these some of these black kids get into so much trouble when they get to these schools??

I can take this a step further-how much stuff do they get away with at those high schools that produce them? I can give you some stories and some of the FEW DISD kids that are in college, they all got in trouble-one for drugs and another was almost RAN out of Neveda University for trying to steal something that cost $250 buck.

When you think you can do whatever and folks let you do whatever and then you run into folks that don't play. You get us getting in trouible in college and the pros.

There is much truth to that article.

My son went through some of that a recent few ago. He made a visit to "Happy Valley" and he said he was very "happy" when he left. :emlaugh: I also backed out on him for a trip to Champagne 1st w/e Oct to do the UnivofIll (paid for by a booster :read: ) deal and he also informed he had 2 gulz sleep w/ him during that visit. The only thing I've emphasized to him is wear a condom, always. I don't care where he attends, excepting several southern states, as he's the one who has to sit through class, walk their campus, deal w/ their students good and bad alike, deal w/ professors good and bad alike, deal w/ positive and negative publicity, etc. It's his choice and his alone, not mine or his mothers.

I hope he chooses Boston College or Air Force if not Duke since he already has the scores that qualify :read:. lol

Why is everyone acting so surprised over this article.:noidea:

These school's was doing this back in the day when we was getting the good black athletes.
The only thing that has changed about this is the Information Age of instant reporting make it easier to put a spotlight on it.

At the same time we was sporting players like the Peytons, the Ladds, the Dents, and the Harold Jacksons, the Michigans, Alabamas, Ohio States of the world was using hookers as a selling point to athletes.
Broadway Joe made his name off of chasing hookers during college and the pros.

This shat didn't just start happening in the 1990's.

The thing is we have to teach our oung men to be careful. Yes this in the information age and you screwing these shanks can backfire if you don't go to that school.

All it takes is one girl to yell rape and they all come runnning out of the woodwork (right Tiger). Or one camera or camera phone and a good Internet connection to make a boy-the next Ray J.

No parent wants to see thier son's "items" flashed on Bossip, TMZ or any Jackson State fan site (if the kid chose another school over them:lol:)

So if school A offered you more booster money than school B, none of you would choose school A? Seriously?

Let me put it this way for the grown folks.....if Job A offered you more money to work for them than Job B, you wouldn't choose Job A? Most of you would and have once upon a time chosen Job A.
If we say that those athletes are wrong for taking the highest bidder, then we're hypocrites to say the least.

Just throwing that out there.

Good question, for those that has been on the board for "years" know this same article surfaces every three to five years and the NCAA looks the other way.

However, UT is not the only program that uses every method to recruit the best players. Honestly, I don't blame the university; it's up to the parents to educate their children. These parents receive all sorts of benefits from the universities. I recall, a Memphis State alumni purchasing a basketball players family a mobile home. Once he graduated reality hit them and they had to move back to their original home.

So if school A offered you more booster money than school B, none of you would choose school A? Seriously?

Yes they would take the highest paying job, so folks can drop the moral rightous attitude. The problem is individuals continue to live in the 20, 30, or 40 - thinking HBCU are the only schools that can educate black kids or the only schools they should play sports. People wakeup, this is 2009 and kids has a right to attend any school that will accept them.

If I was a star athlete in high school, TN State offered me a scholarship and Southern Cal offered me a scholarship, like 100% of us, I will see you on TV playing live from Sunny Southern California.

OUR OWN GOVERNMENT USES "HOSPITALITY GIRLS" IN D.C.

They are company keepers for our legislators while they are away from home.

They keep medical tabs on them and everything......

(Remember all that came out during the Clinton Impeachment hearings)

**Remember the Black sister lawyer Bill Clinton had**

See this is the fcuked up thinking that have us in the position we are in right now..

1. How long is that "money" good for?
A.Until they aren't able to play there any more... or playing eligibility is up.. No more than 4-5 years..

2. Are they guaranteed to go pro?!?
A. H3ll NO!!!

3. If they get lucky and get in as a free agent is anything promised there? Will they be in the league long enough to draw a pension?

A. Chances aren't that great for most that go this route...

Do you think the MONEY these PWCs are PIMPING out is a "lifetime" supply?!?!

4. College sports are NOT a JOB!! (Total difference)

As a black man you should be APPAULED that our young black men are putting their futures in the hands of the HIGHEST BIDDER!!!

Isn’t that like "SLAVERY?"

No it's not the kid that is the issue. It's the what the bidders are doing to get kids.

You do all that "stuff" and get caught don't act shocked about it. You knew you it was a mater of time.

The hypocrite part of it is how the punishment is handed out. Why go after Tennessee, Northwestern, Baylor, Michigan, Minnsota, Alcorn State or Kansas State when you have WORST things going on at USC.

Or you keep welcoming back guys that have ruined programs more than once. Yet a guy does one thing and he's an outcast like Jimmy Tubbs, Clem Haskins or Todd Bozeman (although his days are numbered at Morgan State if he keeps beating PWCs).

Either turn an eye on all of it or get everybody when they do it. But they won't do it because you level the playing field and certain schools can't compete. Because facts about them start coming out and kids will look elsewhere.

Thank you. If that is the case why da fugg do we have sports at hbcus if the pwcs are gonna offer more money?? Yall are the dumbest college educated folks i know. College sports are not a job aint it against the rules to take money from boosters anyway. Comparing college sports to a job is the most riduculous analogy. yall dont realize that these white folks dont give a damn about these black kids. run ****** run is all they see

If you are stupid it's slavery.

A smart person is going to look at all options. I can go to the highest bidder if I want but I have to understand that it can come crashing down (at some schools). As we have seen in the past with Memphis, Baylor and Indiana.

And if we are talking slavery-what do we call it when HBCU go for the highest bidder in basketball to play PWC teams. What good is that check to embarrass the SWAC when the teams get blown out by 30-70 points by no name colleges? You're tuning out recruit with that mess.

Let me play devil's advocate here.....you are assuming that HBCU's do GAF about it's student athletes.

But who's to say that HBCU's care? There are selfish African Americans working at our schools NOW. I'd venture to say that Comegy and Woody cared very little about their players' lives off of the football field.

Okay-well how are you going to get those kids to look past those PWC and even think about a HBCU?

It is against the rules to take money from boosters. Issue is it seems to be only illegal at certain schools.

Like you said those folks don't care about us. They just know get enough of us on those teams and you'll attract the black nonathlete as well our jocks.
