NCAA docks TSU with probation, tennis suspensions
Wins in tennis and softball forfeited; school had already dropped racquet sport

The NCAA came down hard on Texas Southern on for major violations by its men's and women's tennis and softball programs, placing the athletic program on four years of probation and suspending the already-dropped tennis programs Wednesday.

The NCAA's Committee on Infractions also banned the softball program from postseason play for 2009, reduced the tennis programs' number of scholarships and disallowed wins from both tennis and softball.

A former tennis coach was hit with a four-year show-cause order, and a former softball coach was penalized with a three-year show-cause order.

Under those orders, the coaches can seek employment with other schools but would have to appear before the Committee on Infractions, which would limit of their duties.

Even before the penalties, TSU had suspended its tennis teams.

Wins in both softball and tennis were forfeited.

Re: TexasTerror: Sleeping On The Job

I need to start on poll on the most c**n school in the SWAC. Even though you have made some changes, something tells me that TxSo will ALWAYS be TxSo.

My nominees are TxSo and BAMA Jelly.

Hey , did you notice what years this happened? The tennis situation was on the SWACPage all last season.

Chapter Closes, New Chapter Opens for TSU

I really like Charles McClelland's wording in this one after the NCAA handed out the penalties to Texas Southern. This was one of the clouds hanging over the program's head and now it's moved on and the sun is peaking out.

A deal with the Dynamo would be huge for stadium purposes. Having an updated web site for the first time in two years would be a noticeable upgrade. We'll see what other things are in the fold for the Tigers, but Charles looks to the future and he even has a compliance consultant showing the program some direction so they can continue to improve.

The biggest penalties don't even impact the school, but those individuals who really the guilty parties here -- the coaches. The tennis coach's acts were down right despicable!

Still waiting for the sleeping giant to awake...this program has no reason not to be near the top of the SWAC. Only thing lacking is facilities and a few staffing positions if the Dynamo and web site come through. Trust me, when that sleeping giant awakes and things are rolling on Cleburne, they'll revert back to where every institution not named Texas St-San Marcos stands.
---------------------
McClelland, who served as Prairie View A&M's athletic director for the last seven years, was named to the position April 10. McClelland said he sees the NCAA's ruling as the end of a turbulent period at the school.

"I think this really closed the chapter on all of the old, negative issues that were hanging out," he said. "We can deal with these, and we're moving on into our new leadership. We have a new president (John Rudley), a new athletic director, and even the coaches in those programs are new. We're looking at it as an opportunity to strengthen our program and move forward."

TigerPride, sleeping on the job? I had this up on AGS before C-Leb had it up here. ;)

Never got around to TSPN because I was trying to get out of work to come home to be with my wife, who just got a new job. :gift:

:smh:  :smh:

I usually don't come to TSU's defense, but this really old news and the chronicle was very tacky in how they gave so much print to this article. Chucky is learning the hard way on how a newspaper, who glorify you for weeks, can turn on you in an instant:smh::smh:.

Black schools don't stand a chance in Texas...

Did you notice how the Comicle had 3 links on the main sports page, The 2nd being a place for comments and the village idiots are going nuts. They only do things like that when it's bad news about PV or TSU, they never have comment links when they are posting good things (which is very rare).

During a summer in college, I worked for the Houston Post and used to hang out in the Op/Ed and Sports departments when it got really slow.

Just sitting around and listening to some cool and honest reporters who are pissed that they have all this college education but making less than a high school graduate would make as a secretary would share the "truth" in how they are forced to run the same story from last week, last month, last year about Texas Southern but just "tweak" the story a bit and get a fresh "react quote" or two to keep it on the minds of their subscribers. This would make me furious! But when the Managing Editor's or Rewrite Man's alma mater is busted, you better believe the article brings on a more "human side" or sympathy to the story.

As a graduate of the university you hate to hear any negative issues at your school. However, the light at the end of the tunnel is that you have qualified, dedicated, and strong leadership in place. Many of our alumni has questioned the accountability factor in the athletic department with little or no interest from previous administrations.

Wrong is wrong and I will not try to use the excuse that other universities are doing the same or much worse and nothing is being said. However, we all know this to be the case. If you look at the big schools and a coach can make millions of dollars in salaries and incentives the temptation to bind the rules or look the other way is great.

This is an opportunity for us to correct the wrongs and move forward and I ma confident that we can do that we the leadership that is in place.

a) This is a new story since the NCAA just came out with their 'hand me downs' to the university

b) You are right they probably gave it so much print, since a majority of the story is old

c) Chronicle comments to any TSU story -- positive or negative -- always go in a negative direction

These are the best comments I read lol

Seriously, Chronicle, here are four words: Learn. How. To. Write. You can't purport to report about TSU violations, and then spend 4/5 of the article talking about the punishment, and then wait until the last 1/5 of the article to describe what exactly TSU got in trouble for. Seriously, Ronnie, don't quit your day job. What's that, you say? Your day job is actually being a reporter for the Chronicle? Oops, maybe I've found the problem.

Po' RT... :emlaugh:
