Looks like the NFL aint the only league with big news this week. I wonder if the ref in question did any playoff games.


The FBI is reportedly investigating an NBA referee who was allegedly betting on basketball games, including games he worked in the past two seasons.

The New York Post first reported Friday that the year-long investigation is focusing on allegations that the referee bet on games and was making calls that affected the point spread on games. The newspaper reported that according to sources, an arrest of the referee was imminent and that NBA Commissioner David Stern is aware of the investigation.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The FBI is investigating allegations that a veteran NBA referee bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated.
According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered.
The law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on Friday on condition of anonymity, said the referee was aware of the investigation and had made arrangements to surrender as early as next week to face charges. The official, who did not identify the referee, is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.
The law enforcement official said the bets involved thousands of dollars and were made on games during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons.
The probe, which began recently, also involves allegations that the referee had connections to organized crime associates. Other arrests are expected, the official said.
The referee had a gambling problem, according to the official, and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance.
The investigation first was reported Friday by the New York Post.

I am say it now. This story from a sport's angle is bigger than the Vick indictment.

I've been saying for years the NBA seemed fixed...Yeah this is waaaaay bigger than Mike Vick dogfighting. The integrity of the NBA as a whole is on the line in this one.

First, I will just say that I have had my frustrations with the officiating for a long time.

But when words like point-shaving, betting, and gambling are involved, other stories take a seat far to the back of one like this. You mentioned the correct word-integrity. Roger Goodell's problems are quite a bit smaller right now in comparison to what David Stern is facing.
 
I can't understand why they won't just name the ref. I bet if it was a player betting on games, they'd name him.
 
While it's a bigger story than Vick's folly, it sure as hell is NO SUPRISE...at least not to me!


The issue now (in my mind) is not just that this cheating kook got caught, but how many others have done it in the past AND GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT!!

1. F'damn sho they would've named (or the name woulda been leaked) by now. They should name the ref, it's public record if the feds are looking into itt.

2. Yeah...Integrity's the word. Roger Goddell probably thinking, "man, at least the heat's gonna be off my arse for a minute." This is reason 38,083 why the sports leagues are sooooo against putting a team in Las Vegas. This is going to hurt that city's attempt to land one.

This is why David Stern is sweating a lot more than Roger Goodell is right now.
 
I wonder if it is the ref that ejected Tim Duncan for laughing on the bench.....That would explain his short temper with Timmay...

Co-Sign. This is going to be bigger than Pete Rose and his gambling on baseball. He had less control on the outcome of a baseball game than the NBA ref did. This ref had ultimate control. Just think if he wanted to change the point spread and started calling fouls to send teams to the free throw line. Or not calling any fouls to let a game get out of hand.

EB, you are right. Just think if they find out that some of the other refs that worked the games with this guy knew what was going on as he made some suspect calls to change the game outcomes. The creditibility of the league could be in jeopardy.

Didnt I tell you a long time ago that these games were fixed? why is it so hard to beleive that calls have been influeced by outside forces for so long. David Stern knows this is going on...as a matter of fact he is a part of it. He has been engineering the league for a long time. Its so good to see that this stuff is finally coming out. Hopefully Sterns misdoings with Jordan will also be uncovered.

This is where Im at with it. Cuz, it ain't NO tell'n how many got away with it already, spaning over decades.

The only ref/ump that has as much control over a game/match in sports is an ump behind the plate of a baseball game. But, in basketball, it's possible to have 3 control freaks blowing the whistle on a game to game basis. So, if you already have 3 refs that subconsciencly take control of games, anyway...it's sickening that you can, now, put some validity behind what ALOT of people have been thinking already. This one ain't look'n good at all.

That ref ought to be tested for steriods and have his house searched for dead dogs, and told to stay away from strip clubs. :lol::lol:
 
Even though this story is 10X BIGGER the Michael Vick story will still be first thing leading off Sports Center and other news networks. Just look at who is currently on the home page of CNN.com.

Thank you.

I especially hope all this stuff comes back to bite Stern in the behind. The NBA has been rigged for a loooooooong time. A new commissioner is what the NBA really needs.

NBA referee Tim Donaghy is under investigation by the FBI for allegations that he bet on games that he officiated over the past two seasons and that he made calls affecting the point spread in games, multiple sources told ESPN.

Donaghy, a 13-year veteran of the league, is aware of the investigation and resigned from the NBA recently.

The NBA issued a brief statement Friday, saying: "We have been asked by the FBI, with whom we are working closely, not to comment on this matter at this time."
