Mississippi Valley State University Faculty Senate members have endorsed a ?non-confidence?? resolution regarding the leadership of President Lester Newman.

?The faculty have spoken,?? Faculty Senate President Francis Showi said today.

Showi, a 17-year faculty veteran, said the group voted 33-1 with one member abstaining to support the resolution on Tuesday.

Showi said faculty members have a number of concerns about Newman?s leadership, but is reluctant to comment until submitting the resolution and other documents to the state College Board and Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith.

The resolution is non-binding and cannot force the removal of a university president.

Among the concerns of some Faculty Senate members is inconsistency in faculty pay, faculty contracts being issued late and disregard for the chain of command, The Greenwood Commonwealth reported today.

Showi today would only say there are a number of concerns. ?We are working on something and will get it to the right people,?? he said.

It is up to the College Board to hire and fire university presidents. The presidents of the eight universities report directly to Meredith.

Newman was out of his Itta Bena campus office and couldn?t be immediately reached today.
