Music experts- HELP


I think we can agree to disagree on this one. India Arie sucks so bad. She has zero personality. Her music is dull and bland. She should play spoken word taverns. YAWN!!!

Erykah Badu has the live show thing locked up!!! Her shows are awesome!!! Nuff said. Jill's cds are cool but she needs more work on her stage show.

Alicia Keys...boy I'll be glad when this one hit wonder's 5 minutes of fame are up. If I hear Failling one more time!!!

Mary J. Blige never professed to be the greatest singer alive. But she has gotten a lot better. She is awesome in concert. She gives her all. She is a performer.

On the male side...I think Usher is the best performer out right now. Usher has a big career ahead of him.

Mary J has gotten better. Alicia Keys need to sit her arse down somewhere. Badu is one of my all time favorites.

I can't stand Usher, but I can't deny that he is talented and has a huge career ahead of him.

Jill doesn't need to do any more videos. The songs are cool but she doesn't have that look. Usher seems to be the second coming of MJ, but I wouldn't put him in the B2K category. At least he can actually sing and put on a show.

When it comes to showstopping females, if it ain't Janet, I don't want it.

I put Janet and Brittany Spears in the same category. They can dance...they spend huge amounts of money on explosions, dancers, monkies, etc...BUT THEY CAN'T SING!!!

I need an artist on stage with a band ripping it up LIVE!!! I like to hear live versions of the songs. I can stay at home to hear someone lip sync.

India.Arie is TIGHT

BandFan's said it best, so I don't need to say any more. Just wanted to voice my agreement. If you want to hear something inspiring, go to India.Arie - well, her & Gospel ;) She can hold her own with Erykah & Jill; all great artists with loads of talent.

I'm just tired of all these artists who have s phi s's "the look" and get all the props when they have little to no musical ability. Poor Alicia - I think she has the talent, but she slid quickly into the flava of the month when her management focused on her looks. I hope she works on her creativity and doesn't fall into just trying to be popular. Ashanti just needs to get lost :rolleyes:

Hell Naw. Annie Lennox can outsing any of the ladies mentioned today.

Jill Scott and Angie Stone are my favorites as far as new school artists. But as folks have said already these ladies are not eye candy in the commercial world we live in.


I am with Nastynupe on India Arie being overated along with all the rest of them and I do not believe I have heard that she can play more than a guitar. I sure would like to see if she can play trumpet and other instruments. For some reason I don't believe it.

If you have the look plus the right money behind you...you can be platinum. Alicia Keys looks good. J Records is pumping all kind of money behind her. If she was on any other label, she'd be another paper weight. Blu Cantrell looks damn good(I have the issue of Black Tail too) and she can sing a little...but had no money behind her. Ashanti has Murder Inc money behind her.

Now I like that new chick Anne Marie...she's like a new school Mary J. Blige. But I doubt she'll blow up.

It all boils down to the budget that these artist have.

Ashanti.... Look at her label. That is predominantly a rap record label. So, it has MONEY. All they did was find a pretty girl, that was just ok vocally. She's someone that could sing simple background lines. But the people over her label are the one's with the messed up minds. Real singing to them are Ashanti-like voices. You know....those kind that sing simple hooks in raps songs. Not necessarily vocally-challenged people like a Blu Cantrell. So, that's how and why a girl like her got that deal with that big budget to do a ton of things. I have her album, and I must say that it's the beats that's carrying her. She has sold over 2 million units already. Her stage presence is ridiculous. I saw her on the BET Awards. The only good thing was her look. In summation, her top spots on the charts should have been someone elses (like Tweet).

Mary J. Blige.... She was never a really great singer either. Her beats and song arrangements captured everyone. But the fact that she performs so well really won over alot of people. Since she layed that herb down, her voice has improved dramatically. I gotta give it to her.....she's really makin an effort to do better.

Jill Scott.... Jill has some talent. She's original with her material, and it really speaks to people. Her arrangements are off da hook. Someone mentioned her look. They were right. In the business, most companies pressure artist to either get rid of the weight or keep down the best they can. Jill's a big gurl, and that's just her. In her videos, she does remind me of a big kid. lol But oh gurl can still sing. However, I like her for her, and I appreciate her for bringing something original to the table.

Alicia Keys..... What's the big fuss over Alicia? I can hear a voice like hers anywhere. Nothing special about her. I guess she just got the right label to push her. She'll run circles around Ashanti in a live performance, but she can go sit down too.

I can say that part of the reason people went with Alicia over India was the look. I'm not saying that India is ugly, but that natural style just doesn't always stand out unless your music is making some REAL NOIZE. Maybe she'll come back stronger next time. But this girl does have a voice.

I agree. Singers like Ashanti and Sharissa are eye-candy just like BandFan stated. As sphis stated, computers can do a lot for a person's career. But that's how the business is today. I mean people like Jill Scott, Inda.Arie, And Erykah Badu are the reminder of the female R&B singers from back in the day like Diana Ross and THE QUEEN: Aretha Franklin. All most of these newbies talk about is basically their sex life and how bad it is or how good it is. Trust me, if Jill Scott, Angie Stone, India.Arie, and Ms. Badu had a 5'9" frame with a Coke bottle shape, then they, too would be on the overated list. Let Ashanti keep her "singing" voice, and take away her hair, mess up those beautiful legs up and her face a bit and what do you have? A never been. Pretty soon, women like these will be doing movies and if they are sub-par, we'll see them host a talk-show in about 2 years.

Finally, somebody see the light about Janet Jackson's talent. She can at least carry a tune, but she's not a dynamite singer like a Patti Labelle or a Cheryl Lynn type of singers. I listen to Janet because the music sounds good. (How about those former football players from Michigan State, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with that musical knowledge.)
Playing live in front of a crowd is almost a lost art today. It takes time and practice for musicians and singers to get their FEEL down to really put on a good performance live. YOU CANNOT DO IT OVERNIGHT!!. Prime example of a group that has a dynamite live show is TEENA MARIE and her band. Hey, for me Teena Marie ain't white. That mickyficky got to much Funk and Soul to be white.

How many instruments does one have to play in order to be considered talented? Jimi Hendrix only played guitar. Certainly, you won't say that he had no talent.....will ya?

Also, although I think Alica Keys is overrated too, let's look at one thing. The Sista is young as hell. That's reflected in her music. I'll give her credit for doing one thing that many artist in R&B are not doing enough of these days.....she plays an instrument. Being a musican and music lover (KKPsi in da house), I'll give her bonus points for that any day. Most of the cats and chicks in the music game these days have no talent. This young Sista does. I think once she gets a few more years under her belt, she will produce more enjoyable work.
