MLB Urban Invitational/Swac Baseball 2/22-2/24

Re: SWAC Baseball: 2/23

JSU hasn't won since 01

Who gives a ratt's azz, it's baseball, but with the way your football program has been going for the last 10 years, baseball and Cador is your only hope these days. I see why you make so many excuses. LOL!! Keep on making 'em and you'll keep getting called out.....until the weather gets warmer.:lol:

So we just skip all over basketball season?

but with a ton of Porto rican players. the coach is porto rican. i think it fulfills the same mission the schools were founded with. it does get at the conundrum that faces our schools. To be the best academically, and athletically it can't be just black players or black students. The tent has to expand to other minority groups and majority students as well. I'm sure they recruit black players that they feel are as good they need to be competitive. I hope all our schools are getting the best players they can though regardless of ethnicity.

Ditto...enough said.

Re: MLB Urban Invitational

ASU tacks on another run with a round tripper to lead 6-3.

Sitting here talking with Journalist.

Minute Maid is a GREAT place to watch baseball. I just hate to see great events like the Invitational take place in our footprint ... only for a handful of die-hards coming out.

Great to meet Fiyah as well.

Estrada's Grand Slam Lifts Hornets Over Southern

HOUSTON – Waldyvan Estrada's grand slam highlighted a five-run fifth inning as Alabama State beat Southern 6-4 Saturday in the Major League Baseball Urban Invitational at Minute Maid Park.

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth with one out, a Manny Rodriguez single was sandwiched around walks to Dillon Cooper and Einar Muniz to load the bases. Richard Amion grounded out to third, scoring Cooper with the first run. Following a walk to Richard Gonzalez to load the bases, Estrada hit a 1-1 pitch out to left field off of reliever John Thigpen to put the Hornets ahead as Alabama State improves to 6-1 for the first time since 2009.

“I thought it was a fastball down the middle,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “He put a good swing together. We have shown the ability to hit the long ball a little more than the past (five this year through seven games after hitting 14 all of 2012). A lot of credit goes to our head strength and conditioning coach Karl Jordan for working tirelessly with our guys, and you see the difference with our guys and the way they are swing the bats and the power they are creating.”

Joseph Camacho (2-0) pitched into the seventh, allowing six hits, four runs with one walk and three strikeouts.

“He got out of trouble consistently,” Melendez said. “I didn't think he had great stuff tonight, but he bore down in big situations. I wanted to get five innings out of him. I got six, so I got one bonus inning from him. He did a good job.”

In the sixth, Cooper hit his first home run of the season to complete the Alabama State scoring, once again in the late innings. The Hornets are finishing games strong, outscoring opponents 43-15 from the fifth inning on this season.

“Our guys have to be resilient, and sometimes it doesn't happen at the beginning of the game,” Melendez said. “In the first inning, we left a runner on second base with no one out, and he didn't score. In the second inning, we had a runner on third base and we punch out (strike out) twice. So, we did a better job as the game went on. I was proud of the guys for sticking with it and doing a good job later in the ball game when it counts.”

Alabama State will go for the weekend sweep of the MLB Invitational Sunday at noon against Texas Southern before coming home to face Troy Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Kennesaw State Wednesday at 4 p.m.

“We have to take it one inning at a time,” Melendez said. “We have to take everything in stride. Although we want to win, and we came here to win and have every intention of that, we're learning how to play the game. We've got to take it one pitch at a time, one inning at a time, and if we play well, I like our chances.”

I remember last year when I mentioned Bama State went and got them a good baseball coach and some players. I don't think anyone in the SWAC can deny that now after doing a lot of bragging about their own teams earlier. Any team is capable of winning and loosing, but this Bama State coach and the recruits he's continuing to bring in is breath taking. Yes! the season is still early and the Hornets should win a lot more games and will also probably loose a few. Just know that there's another baseball team in the SWAC that's serious about winning and they mean every bit of that--Beating Chicago St. in three games, Mercer in one, PV and SU in one apiece is worthy of note at this juncture. We're 6-1 at this time and may the good times continue to roll.

What's impressive is they are winning with 2 Juniors and 2 Seniors. Kudos to the coach and ASU!

It's like I told a friend of mine who claims El Salvadorian. Brother you're as black as me. Your ancestors might have picked suger cane and mine cotton and tabacco but, your West African features are like mine, as clear as day. We have a player( Amion I think is his name) who looks like he could be hispanic or from Greenville County Alabama. I for one am happy to have the diversity on our campus. Sure I wish more African (United States) Americans would take a intrest in base ball( especially with the movie #44 coming out) but, thats not the world we live in. Go Hornets!!! Excuse the typos it is Saturday night/Sunday morning after all and the liqour is flowing.

F@&k all that, you play to win the game. Forget the color bullcrap. Its all about giving young folk an opportunity.

coaches recruit players they feel give them the best opportunity to win.

This coach have around (12) pitchers under his grasp at ASU. I don't know how many other teams average, but to me that sounds like a lot of dayum pitchers for anybody's team. This coach haven't been at ASU, but for one full year. It appears that he's just getting started or warmed-up.

Twelve pitchers isn't an unusual number. Many MLB teams carry 11 or 12 pitchers throughout the season. You examine the rosters of most Division 1 teams and they have well over a dozen arms.
